My grandpa served in the US Navy from 1937 - 1945 and fought in almost every major Pacific naval battle after Pearl Harbor, all the way to Okinawa. He even had his destroyer sunk by a kamikaze in the South Pacific and watched his crewmates get devoured by mako sharks. He did, however, forgive the Japanese and visited Japan several times before he passed away. He was very proud of me when I was in high school for learning Japanese, because he felt like his wartime experience led to healing. Just, you know, for the record.

2 of my great-grandpas fought the Japanese in WWII. The one who invaded Iwo Jima and burned them to death with a flamethrower, actually really liked the Japanese after and bought a lot of watches and cameras from them. The one who was a gunner in a B-25 did NOT like the Japanese though, even in the 80's he refused to ride in any Toyota or Nissan cars out of principal.
