Like Swans, death grips, animal collective, Caroline Polachek, etc. get very positive reviews from Pitchfork and Fantano, but they are not very popular. So if someone says they are overrated that is what they mean, the critical acclaim. The "Critical Darling" trope. That is different from someone saying Jack Harlow is overrated because Jack Harlow gets shit on by critics all the time. What they mean is that Jack Harlow doesn't deserve his popularity by calling him overrated. Some artist could be either like if someone calls an artist like Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar, or Tool overrated they could be talking about popularity or critical acclaim.

I think radiohead sound is very easy to enjoy for most people. There is a lot of masterful music from the krautock, post punk, psychedelic and post rock eras that some radio head fans would definitely love just as much, but some Radiohead fans genuinely love the music more than anything and they ain’t wrong for that.
