The number one safety rule on the first Vmax delivered to our store was to tell the customers to move out before overtaking anything or else you would end up in the back of what was in front of you due to the acceleration being being so instant with the change of one to two carbs feeding each cylinder when you hit that throttle. We had a few that came back within a week of selling with the front end of the bike bent back to the radiator because they did not listen. I remember one guy bought brand new Kawasaki LTD 440 twin who rocked it off of the main stand running and planted the bike into the front wall of the bike shop and totaled it. No matter how we tried to help new or experienced riders the know It all’s always gave us reason to keep trying to educate them on the new bikes. The Vmax is my number one bike to ride on the road.

The V boost found on the first Gen VMAX was actually a butterfly system fitted between the carburetors. When a specific rpm was reached an actuator would open the butterfly valves between the carburetors allowing a single cylinder to draw from 2 carburetors. It allowed the VMAX to have good riding characteristics throughout the entire rpm range, reasonable economy and have that high power output.

I had a Yamaha Fazer 700 which was the baby brother to this (even had little fake V-Max scoops) in the same colors, rode that for a while and loved it. Then I stepped up to the first gen V-Max and never wanted for more. I kept up with all my buddies on sport bikes, was more comfortable and did almost zero maintenance. Was the most fun I ever had on a bike. Literally could not smile when you twisted the throttle, even just going for a casual ride.
@annafraser86543 жыл бұрын
I bought one of these next Gen VMax first year it was offered back in 2009. I rode it for 10 years and sold it back in 2019. I loved this bike, I only sold it to pay off the remainder of my student loans. If I had a complaint, and to me this isn't really a big deal but the gas mileage was bad but it was to be expected. I got about 25mpg to 28mpg. The gas tank was about 4 gallons and I drove this to work a lot, and my trip was about 60mile round trip which meant I visited a gas station everyday, but I loved every minute of it. Yamaha sells a 240 tire kit for this from the factory, one of my first modes plus I shaved the beaver tail to show of the fat tire. It does nothing for the performance but it sure did look great. I have been itching to get back on a bike and my search has lead me to 3 possible bike, another one of these, a Diavel, or a ZH2. I am leaning toward the Diavel simply for something different.

I remember when the VMax first came out in '85, I used to go to the Yamaha dealer in San Diego about twice a week, sometimes more, for over a year and spend hours standing across the street staring and gawking at the VMax parked in the showroom, dreaming of the day I would own one. Fate had it that I'd never get the chance to own one. It's 2020 and I'm 54 years of age now and still dreamin' that fate will smile at me one day, though I'm exclusively into ADV bikes nowadays. WRONG on the butterfly valves giving a ram air effect!! The "V Boost" was actually aa complex arrangement of butterfly valves that opened at above a certain number of revs so a cylinder on its induction cycle could use the carb of the neighbouring cylinder whilst that cylinder was on the exhaust cycle. In essence the bike goes from having 4 carbs to having 8 carbs attached to 4 cylinders above a certain RPM level. This meant that when the V Boost kicked in each cylinder suddenly had the equivalent of two carbs available during the induction cycle. This allowed the V Max to break the old Kawasaki KH750 H2's fastest accelerating production vehicle record with a sub 3 second (2.4 seconds) 0 to 60 MPH world record. The V Max's record was eventually taken by the Feuling W3C in the mid 1990's. Later V Max bikes were detuned with the V Boost disabled or nerfed to cater for riders of a more wimpier disposition who liked the looks and sound of a V Max but didn't want the underwear damage that riding a full power V Max can bring. When I used to drag race bikes, back in the late 1980's, I was at Santa Pod Raceway (in the UK) and a bored out 1300cc Cosworth tuned V Max with Nitros recorded a 169 MPH terminal over a standing quarter mile (440 Yards) with a time in the 8's. It was announced that it was the fastest quarter for the day and the highest terminal speed also for the day. This is why the original full power 1985 V Max is legendary.

The butterflies did NOT create a ram air affect. What the Vboost did was opened around 6000 RPM and the front to rear carbs were linked. So each cylinder when the butterflies were opened were using 2 carburators for one cylinder. Euro Vmax bikes due to regulations didnt have the Vboost. HP was 90. American Vmax bikes had the Vboost HP was 145. In reality, the HP at the rear wheel was around 110 due to the rear diff.

I had a 89 Vmax.. It needed a little work,but when I got it all back together,this thing WAS a monster!! Kinda short in the leg,but when you get on it this thing screamed!! And,you didn't even get into the V boost,buddy.. The front end gets really light around 140,and if you don't get ONTO what is supposed to be the fuel tank,you WILL be flying! Lol.. Have fun with it!! I sure did.. Keep those 2 wheels down,my friend.. Peace and may God be with you.

I went to a Yamaha demo event at Malcolm Smith’s in 2014 because I was pondering buying the fresh new FZ-09. While waiting for a slot to open up on the FZ, for sh**s and giggles I took a spin on Mad Max, having never had the opportunity to sling a leg over the OG Max. It was the most frightening thing I have ever ridden! Zero reason for an almost 700lb bike with 200hp, (which is really all the reason you need) Surprised you didn’t mention the shaft drive effect, where under hard acceleration, instead of the front end wanting to come up, the back end raises up and it feels like the bike is going to take off like an airplane. My other observation was that first gear was useless unless you need to pull a horse trailer. I quickly figured out that 2nd was as far as any 180lb solo rider needed to downshift, and that made it much easier to make a right turn from a stop. I rode the FZ next and despite the well documented crap suspension and jerky throttle, found it was much less of a handful and much more fun, and ended up buying one, which I still have, though with lots of suspension and mapping fixes deployed. To me, it’s the little Max, and all the fun I need. Long live Max, hail the king!

My mt09 is just getting done with m4 exhaust power commander 5. I'm debating to adjust the front shock, and soften it up a bit. The rear shock is a bit saggy under aggressive leaning. I'm thinking ohlines inserts for the front and ohlines for the rear. What are you pondering?
@arenhoomen55022 жыл бұрын
The shaft drive is what we used to call "stand and salute",because that rear end would just lift up,and you were OFF and rolling! Mine was an 89. Loved that scooter!!! I'm on a built 114 stroked Harley now,and it's not as fast as my old Vmax,but she'll run pretty close to it..

I bought an 88 new right before Christmas 88. The dealer let me winter store the bike in their showroom, they had a section roped off for all of the winter bought bikes. The bike was awesome and very comfortable to ride. I used to ride back and forth between Connecticut and Maryland down 95. I took the bike to California in 91 when I moved there, and kept it for a few more years. I wish I still had it today. And you're right, very low maintenance.

I have a 2005 anniversary special I bought new. I remember when they first rolled out the first year vmax I went to the dealer to look at it and at that time they wouldn’t even sell it to you unless you’re an experienced rider. I knew then and there someday I would get one! The vboost at that time when it hit about 6000 RPM it would literally throw you back. I still love it! You can never go wrong with any Vmax.
@lescrone50484 жыл бұрын
I worked for a Yamaha desalted in 1985 when this bike came out. At the time, we didn’t stock ANY tires that large, so we definitely got a pallet of tires with it. We were located next to an Army base and the VMax was a huge hit. I was just 19 and it was too scary for me though. I wasn’t even allowed to sit on it!

I loved my V-Max. Still one of the meanest looking bikes out there. I hated the small gas tank under the seat-it emptied way too fast! Had to throw a Corbin seat on for more comfort, but what a bike! The same motor, but defined a bit, was also on the Yamaha Venture back then.
@spaceflight10192 жыл бұрын
The Venture was first. It came out after Honda introduced the V65 Magna and Sabre. Cycle Magazine tested the Venture and took a photo of it minus the bodywork. Everyone thought that this would make a heckuva power cruiser. So did Yamaha, because the next year the V-Max was born, Kawasaki borrowed the 900 Ninja engine for the Eliminator, and Suzuki introduced a new 1200 V4 engine for the Madura and Cavalcade. The mid-80s were a liquid-cooled paradise.

The gen 1 vboost acutually had nothing to do with air intake. It was essentially an intake plenum splitter. Closed, each cylinder can draw from 2 carbs, but when the splitter opened, each cylinder drew from all four carbs. Yes that means more air but the gen 1 intake scoops were more less fake for appearance.

My phone is where I watch most things, but I wanted to hear the vmax on the sound system and feel like I'm riding my vmaxene. BTW, I'm not a TV snob, I just want to fill the wall space... for 900bux why not. 6 years ago I paid 1000 for a 50 :) so prices are falling. Had a 1st gen new as my FIRST motorcycle in the '90 the first week I lifted the front launching at a red light, scary stuff but I calmed down and enjoyed every KM I was on it especially in tunnels. Joined a club, touring with 300 other Maxes was the best, some people really went crazy with the mods. The original did have meters at the top of the fake tank, also the scoops were completely fake on the gen 1 but the looks make it really bad-ass. True muscle bike, often called the Terminator of bikes. Also every time at the gas station was pure fun opening that tank everyone came to have a look at it.

I worked as a mechanic in a Yamaha shop when these came out, and I can tell you with zero hesitation that the vmax was the scariest damn motorcycle I've ever ridden,without exception, and I rode pretty much everything available then. You couple the arms pull out of the socket power with the insane torque from the shaft drive, and you were sure death was another 20' down the road. That is not hyperbole. I'll never get on one again.

@blamestormer99414 жыл бұрын
Tyler: I own both Maxes, the 1200 and the 1700. There are rumors about bad cornering of the 1200 VMax. Mine corners very good, many, many "races" on twisty alpine roads surprised many bikers on all kinds of bikes lol. The 1700 is cornering brilliant even on high speed. I like the R3 and I will testride it later this year. I doubt though that it handles better than the 10 year old 1700 VMax (launched here in 2010). Your comment shows that you don't know any of the bikes. No Max and no Rocket. Maybe you first get your driving license before talking about Big Bikes.
@seanbutler22914 жыл бұрын
@@tylerbennetts8079 debatable the max has a fully adjustable front and rear suspension. And the engine is a stressed member much like the rocket. And the max is decently lighter than even the new rocket. I feel like it would come down to rider.

As a young lad in the late 80s this was the first bike I rode pillion on when the owner brought the front end up for a wheelie at 55mph+ Serious butt pucker. I was not a rider then. I would not feel the same intensity until I owned an GSF1200S Bandit that I had modified with an ignition advancer, Stage one, etc, and hit 165mph indicated on I-280 SB where the minor bumps in the road would have you airborne for a split second. Those are the capstones for my motorcycling intense experiences. They were enough for me.

Hey man. Love the videos and welcome to the club. I found a 15 for 9k last season after building then selling a gen 1. When you get the chance, take a look at the ECU just under the faux tank for a red sticker saying "gurued gear". If it's not there, it's well worth the cash to have em flash it. Tames first gear from a stop, makes the power band smoother, removes that annoying ignition cut in fourth and unlocks the ecu. Pretty much makes the bike ride the way it should have from the factory. Glad you like it. Cheers

To be honest the new Vmax is probably easier to ride than either of those bikes if you stay out of the throttle. It should feel a lot like riding a dyna except for all the burnouts and wheelies at full throttle. From a older guy who had owned, rode, and raced many fast bikes you would go from intimidated to in love in the first 500 miles, and wonder how you ever lived without such a bike in your life.
