I think the ending of Nier Automata is an anti-suicide statement. The game doesn't use the words explicitly, and the characters don't use typical suicidal verbal or body language. But If you walk trough the story, everything leads up to the conclusion that would make one throw away their life. And they do precisely that. 9S runs at a sword out of rage fully disregarding himself. And A2 feels relieved to commit a self destroying act of sacrifice. It is subtle, but make no mistake. They are throwing their life away at the end first and doing whatever they are doing secondary. The game is about a war that is artifically kept up from both sides, with non-existing goals and non-existent gods, just for the sake of trying to get away from the absurdly meaningless reality, by using the very same absurdity. Trought the game you see characters attempting to find meaning trough different ways, then either get it taken away from them, or get what they want just to realise it is just as meaningless. Just to name a couple examples. Pascal tried to find meaning in community and pacifism. That got it taken away from him. The forest kingdom tried to find meaning in loyality for a leader, until that leader ceased to exist. Simone sacrificed everything to be enough for social expectations, yet she still failed at the end and went mad. Adam tried to find meaning in personal conflict, but that only worked as long as he didn't mess with someone stronger. Eve tied his meaning in life to admiring his brother, and he couldn't stand alone for himself without going crazy and throwing his life away. 2B and 9S clinged to each other and their strange relationship for meaning. A2 chosed anger and the mindless murdering of machines and yorha units that come after her. In the sidequests the Robo Dojo machine chosed self improvement, but even when he went all out he lost to 2B at the end and couldn't deal with it. Everything leads to the same tragic conclusions. Despite the circumstances 2B refuses to comply at the end by saving 9S, and A2 goes a long way to heal all trough route C, but even that doesn't matter. The game is constantly throwing content at the player that screams either absurdity, meaninglessness or uselessness. The game events scream that the world is cruel, meaningless and all previous widely ranging attemps at fixing this resulted in failure. Then it gives the final blow when the player thinks they might have chosen the wrong character to play as, by leading up to the same tragic result regardless of choice. Then the game asks 3 questions: if you are going to do something about it or just up? if you are you going to accept help about it? and if you are willing to help others who go trough the same thing? And notice, that even after that, the game doesn't give you a happy end. It just gives you a hopeful end. The effort you and the others put in did not fix the problem. But it gave the characters another chance at it. The game aknowledges that there is a high chance that they might end up at the same place again. But there is also a small chance that something can be changed. Reflecting in real life. Suicidal people are often told to just make sure they make it to the next day. Then the next day. Then the next day. There is always a chance tomorrow will be just as awful as today was. But as long as you make sure to see tomorrow, there is always a chance it will be better.

As someone who's suicidal, I cried during final credits. I have no idea if that was made on purpose by Yoko Taro or I am just trying to cope, but it was beautiful. Like someone reached out to me... and said "hey, I know it's pretty hard, but you can do it. Here, look at all these people, all with different struggles, they all came to support you!". This game spoke to me on deeply personal level, I never experienced anything like that.

I have a small criticism. Nier: Automata is not a game about Nihilism, and is also not a game about Existentialism. It is a game about Absurdism. Nihilism = There is no meaning, and we do not have free will, therefore you cannot create meaning. Existentialism = There is no meaning, but we have free will, so you can create personal meaning. Absurdism = There is no meaning, and to attempt to create meaning is absurd and pointedly impossible. Life is inherently characterized by suffering, and you will never escape it. However, in order to find true actualization as sentient beings, we must - rather absurdly - fight against this lack of meaning and be happy regardless of it. The meaning of life is not what you make it (because it cannot be made); rather, it is the simple action of attempting to make it at all and being happy at the realization that it cannot actually be made. I say this because, during ending E, the pods indicate that this whole sequence we have played through will likely happy again. It is a cycle, perpetuated by human nature that resides inside the androids. All of this will happen again, yet they decide to continue anyway. That is textbook absurdism taken straight from The Myth of Sisyphus. While I disagree with the point about nihilism, I do love your narration style. Subscribed.

Since I don't know much about philosophy, I used to say that Nier:Automata is about finding purpose in life, but your definition is the most accurate. Even Emil proves your point during ending Y: "No matter how hard or how painful... They never gave up. They kept fighting because they believed they could overcome someday! Isn’t that right, Kainé!? Even if it’s pointless, you still have to do it! BECAUSE THIS IS THE WORLD MY FRIEND TRIED TO SAVE!" -Emil

@@YoRHa2C So with that, the juxtaposition of Emil's terrifyingly naive words there on what his _friends_ were doing the whole time were most likely meant to emphasize not only the obvious pointlessness of our "absurdist" endeavors in N:A, but also their sheer futile human toll and the situations we've made even worse... ...which by that point we should realize that this whole Ending E nonsense of personally following the Nier dude's footsteps of fighting the Shadowlord and the Shades (i.e., Yoko Taro and N:A's entire staff) to "save" Yonah (i.e., 2B, 9S, and A2) isn't really worth the time, energy, and team effort-that we should instead use that ending's spirit of community and compassion to educate and steer others away from such a deceitful, destructive cause, and become more accepting of the game's reality checks.

But I think this is much more effective honestly. The ending is Soo good I wanted to get it on my own for like an hour strait, and then I finally realized I could not carry all the weight on my own. I still wanted to get the emil ending, but I decided to delete it all. I started over and have now completed all endings and the dlc.

"but i still have my backup since im a completionist/perfectionist etc!" And so after 40 odd hours spent on this game, I have finally managed to complete the game (all 5 endings). Phew This game has truly been a journey. A feast to not only the eyes but also the spirit. Rarely do you get games like this where the not only the story but the experience of playthrough itself makes you think and ask the big questions - what is the meaning of life? Is there a God? Cliche questions indeed. Vague too, which is also precisely the reason why there is so much in both depth and breadth to such questions. And probably why there isn't, and never will be an answer to it. Perhaps you whom sit there and read this review will think to yourself, you have an answer. You know what you wish to do with your life, and you believe that perhaps God is all a hoax, and that destiny is fixed with no possibility of change. But not I. Nor many out there, and neither do I think the characters in the game truly knew either. But they did at the same time. When we first met 2B and 9S, they knew the purpose of their lives. They knew what they had to do, and they had a god. A noble cause to fight for. When we first met A2, she too knew the purpose of her life. It was for sure, a change from before her renegade ages but she had one. Yet in the end, it was all meaningless. Their god was a lie, a hoax, a made up story to which so many of their comrades lost lives for. Perhaps the characters did know all along, even at the point of death. The moment of enlightenment that took place just before their consciousness fades away to nothingness. Pitiful, yet heartbreakingly beautiful. The game left a melancholic ring as I watched the final sequence play out. I watched all 3 protagonists die before my eyes, and the final panning shot of disabled A2's body leaning against the window, looking out at the desolate, crippled, deteriorating forest of concrete and leaves left nothing but a small hole in my heart. There will be no epilogue. There are no happily ever after. Project YoRHa is over. The story has finished and it had ended on a note that rang hollow. Perhaps that was also why I decided to give up my saves. Sure, I had found many weapons, collected many chips and unlocked all pod skills, but the sense of emptiness made me feel like I don't want to go back. I don't want to go back to the world where there are no longer a meaning. It felt lonely - being alone is one thing, but feeling lonely is another. I feel like I will put this game away for a while. A week, a month, a couple even. The game is breathtakingly beautiful, yet I cannot bear the sensation of going back into that world again. I do wish to 100% this game sometimes in the future, but not now. Not until this draining pit of emotional carcass buries itself into the back of my head. But then again, who knows. Perhaps I will open this game up 10 years down the line and it all will come back. The memories, the emotions, the philosophical afterthought. 2B, 9S, A2. Thank you, PlatinumGames. Thank you, Square Enix. Glory to Mankind.

It was a friday night. My room was pitch black and only my monitor was on. I was thriled for finally making to the Tower at the end of the game, also, had no rush at playing it at all, spend solid 100hrs to get to the final point. My choice was 9S's ending and it deeply touched me. Seeing Adam talk to 9S on his death bed, asking him to leave all his frustrations behind and to take his hand into a new revigorating peace far above from all that pain had me in tears. After saying yes, the Angelic version of Weight of World comes in, filling me qith emotions to the brim, the camera pans out to show Popolla and Copolla at the root of the Tower then proceeds to show the ruined landscaped which served as our's hub throught the game, finally making it to the end credits, where I could barelly see my reflection on the screen, in absolute awe, after playing this masterpiece.

I think it does tie into the story of the main game actually, thematically anyway. the whole thing is soaked in some variant on "why do we do the things we do" and then at the end you're given a chance to ask that question to yourself

The game opens with the line “Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never-ending spiral of life and death. Is this a curse? Or some kind of punishment? I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle...and wonder if we'll ever get the chance to kill him” In ending E we are killing the game’s creators and are effectively killing the gods of this world. By deleting our save data we’re effectively removing ourself from the world killing the final “god” to the characters and truly ending the neichzien cycle of eternal recurrence.

Minor critique; Nier’s ending isn’t about nihilism, it’s about absurdism. While nihilism says life is completely meaningless, absurdism says we can still create meaning for ourselves and that while finding inherent meaning may be impossible the pursuit of it is still worthwhile.

Ah yes, this is the first game that made me go "If I had to suffer, so too do all of my friends" and I now draw great delight in watching them crumble into fitful sobs just as I did. Yes. B u r n. Also the first game that made me actually seek out the actual voice actor(s) for characters just to say FUCKING KUDOS ON THAT VOICE ACTING. Happy to go on the 'Yoko Taro's Emotional Train Wreck Ride' CHOO CHOO.

You mistake nihilism for existentialism. Nihilism is the absence of intrinsic meaning, but existentialism is the building of one on top of that absence.

The soundtrack "weight of the world" also make the emphasis of the ending. The lyrics is it's story of humanity itself. Sure a human can make mistake and the consequence come to them. But human also able to learn from the mistake and chose better way to life. We always search a meaning why we life in this world. Maybe we can find the answer but maybe we can't. But in the end we all human experience the same struggle, the same sufferring. That's why we help each others eventhought we all totally stranger to each others. This soundtrack is not just a song but also a prayer for all humanity to finally help each others and make better future together. I cried like a child when i see this ending credit and also thanks to this game developer to teach us what the meaning of humanity even our existence is seems meaningless in this world.

It speaks volumes how everyone praises nier automatas ending even without taking drakengard into account, because Nier:Automata is the 4th and final game of the flower timeline (Drakengard3->Drakengard1->NieR Gestalt/Replicant->NieR: Automata) and *SPOILER* its ending is just perfect, the P33 Unit from gestalt preserving the last existing bit of humanity given/taught to it by kalil, giving the androids and machines a sense a self preservation around year 5000 which leads to the revival of humanity by sending Adam,Eve and the machine network out into the universe via the arc, and all this after being seemingly defeated by the flower after the events of NieR gestalt/replicant. On its own and in the context of drakengard, the ending of autamta is perfection, continuing would only ruin it, good thing yoko taro stated that automata is offically the end of that timeline. (I mean they killed off square enix, so yeah.)

On top of how this game feels playing it as a stand-alone.. play replicant, and research drakengard and how the story ties in if you don’t have access to the games. And suddenly you feel complete, and peace, and content. Comfy. Knowing the full picture it’ll feel like your life is comeplete for awhile. But regardless if you experience that or not.. the music still made me cry countless times before I ever knew myself. And made me feel things that I can’t ever put into words other than ones that make me cuss just because of how fucking good it is. I just laugh because it’s such an overwhelmingly good feeling that if I’m being honest with you, I’d give my life to feel. These games helped me cope with what was going on in my life and gave me new meaning. Changed it forever. Possibly even saved me. To all of you who have taken the time to play this game in its entirety, and give up your time. Thank you, you are unique, and one of few who feel this gift. And I can’t think of a bad person ever fully feeling this game and story to it’s fullest and understanding it. So if you really do… you are an amazing human being, and just a reminder :) keep on living for those who died so you can live. Glory, to mankind.

Felt pretty bad when that final choice was given to me because my stubborn ass kept denying the help and say shit like "fuck off I don't need help". Had to make the sacrifice in order to make up for cussing out those people who sacrificed their save data in order to help me.

It's extremely jarring to hear someone use the word "existential" in one sentence and then wrongly define nihilism as existentialism in the very next.

I will never ruin the ending of this game for anyone. If they as me what the ending is I'll just tell them to play the game and guide them as they play. Automata is a game where Ending E is something you truly should not spoil, if only to find out at the core of emotional weakness. What type of person are you?

For me. Just only the thought that I can help unknown player to reach the true end is the best thing I ever do. Ok, my save are gone, but my memory and my soul player go beyond. I'm a human and I have an heart, I'm not an automata. We have ours lifes, sometime can be the same day, day by day we do the same things, but in the end we can do a different choices for other persos. Because the journey of ours life can be different if we decide to live the happines of our life. Thank you for the video. We are human and not biomachine.
