It's interesting that Snape used his knowledge of the Dark Arts to make the world a better place.
@TsukabuNosoratori23 ай бұрын
Right? And in the end it was a combination of Snape and Budge's work that helped Harry thrive in his last year of Potions under Slughorn. Harry wasn't under Snape's torment and when he got his copy of Advanced Potion Making, he learned to translate it to his advantage (I also love how that pissed off Hermione something fierce.)

From what I understood Snapes describes the dark arts having been created as a last resort to rid of near unstoppable threats. In class Snapes describes DA branch of magic as pragmatic & ever evolving and it’s for this reason Snapes warns that the dark arts must be given their due respect or they will destroy you.

@somersault11233 ай бұрын
Not likely. Both clues that we have for Snape as an exceptional potion maker are actually better explained as his lack of ability in Potions. Those clues are; his position as Potions Master and his old Potions textbook. Why do they actually work against him? Why would a naturally gifted Potioneer need to write down their new methods in their Potions book? Because they keep forgetting the process. So they require a guide but don't even bother to write their own process down in full. Instead opting to amend and add to existing framework. This is because their true skill lies elsewhere: Dark Arts. If he was no good at Potions, why would Dumbledore make him Potions Master for so many years? Dumbledore wanted Snape to remember the real genius behind his Potions book, Lily. So he made him Potions Master instead of giving him the Defense Against the Dark Arts post that Snape wanted. Surely if Snape wrote the superior guide to the textbook and Slughorn never made any such guide himself, then Snape is the better Potions Master and should remain Potions Master after Slughorn is convinced to come back to Hogwarts. But he isn't. Slughorn takes his position. Because Slughorn is better at Potions. In fact, Snape isn't very good at Potions at all. Which i why he needs to keep the reference guide that Lily made him even while he's serving as Hogwart's Potions Master. Which explains why his old, outdated book is still in the Potions classroom after all those decades: He still needed to reference it even while passing himself off as a Professor in Potion making. Whereas Lily never needed to deface her textbook as her personal notes were already more detailed and her memory of Potions much clearer and not clouded by consideration of Dark Arts and using such Dark Arts to get back at Gryffindor Bullies like James and Sirius and show up Slytherin bullies like Bellatrix. With that much pressure to excel at Dark Arts, there is no time to secretly develop an advanced expertise in Potions that far exceeds the actual experts before even leaving school. While also becoming so adept at Occlumens and potentially Legillimens as well to rival the second strongest wizard to ever live as well. "But we know that Snape did write the additions to his Potions book because he wrote his own Dark Arts spells there as well." Not exactly. He likely became fond of the book as he was so obsessed with Lily and the book became something through which he felt a connection with her. So some of his Dark Arts work would have been added since he probably wished Lily would share his own enthusiasm for Dark Arts as well. So he would have started jotting random notes in there about his other obsession(Dark Arts) as well. The hard evidence we have is that Severus actually invented his own curses(Dark Arts). If he was so adept at Potions that he could run circles around the professionals while studying, he would have at least one Potion creation to his name by the time he's 30-40 years old as well. But there are none. Instead what we see is him always standing on the shoulders of giants in the field of Potions.

I always thought of potions as cooking. Weather your expertly baking a wedding cake or making bacon and eggs, there's a certain je ne sais quoi about doing it. And some people can't reliably toast bread, or boil water without a kettle. Same with potions you could be a great and powerful spellcaster but if you don't got it you won't get it. The right teacher / instructor also matters. Head cannon : JKR can't cook but has respect for people who can. PS. Personally love your respect for water (Lifeguard) the moment you think a lake, creek, pool, bathtub, won't take your life.... the water says "bet".

How come potions outside of class takes weeks or months to complete. But in class they are able to finish a potion in a couple of hours
@seattlefloyd3 ай бұрын
The ones they do in a single class are the simplest, quickest ones. Classroom exercises should teach the basic and advanced techniques; the potions themselves are beside the point. If the students master the techniques, they can make any potions they want. It's analogous to chef's school. They don't have a separate lesson for every dish. They teach different methods, proper use of various knives, pots, pans, various heat sources, etc. Then the graduates can apply that knowledge to any food they want.
@JamesDavy20093 ай бұрын
@@seattlefloyd True. Certain ingredients to make Polyjuice Potion are hard to obtain (boomslang skin for instance) and/or time sensitive (fluxweed picked at the full moon for maximum potency). But is Felix Felicis the most powerful potion? There wasn't very much in Slughorn's phial. Unless he actually didn't want any student to have much. Then again, only one teaspoon (tablespoon?) was needed for a perfect 24 hours. The DA took only a small bit each, and they were able to miss the Death Eater blows. Harry also noted that though the potion revealed a small bit ahead of him in his journey to Hagrid's, he also noted that the portion was nudging him this way and that, like refilling Hagrid's and Slughorn's glasses of liquor. And knowing Hagrid was really asleep and wouldn't hear Harry's conversation with Slughorn. Perhaps Budge had imbued all of his potions with a bit of himself. Like maybe portraits of Headmasters have?
