When I was in Boy Scouts, my Computers merit badge counselor challenged me to complete a series of calculations using whatever method I wanted, while he used a slide rule. They were simple enough, but with a modern calculator, I couldn't hope to match his speed. A master with the slide rule is a terrifying mathematical powerhouse.

the interesting thing that a slide-rule in the hands of someone who knows how to use it: computers are only as fast as they can input data. The sliderule is a faster method of input then a keypad most of the time, so you get your answer a bit faster. But when you've got tens of thousands of similar math problems stored on a hard drive, the computer isn't slowed down by it's interface anymore, and suddenly the amount of calculations it can ingest and process goes to the moon. This doesn't even account for the fact that a computer can operate in parallel now-which takes the 'do more then one program' to it's extreme.

As many occupations get replaced by robots or computers (as we know them), it's not difficult to imagine a world in which the human work force is almost obsolete.
