There was this one regular substitute teacher (an older white man) we had in high school that had a very obvious asian fetish. And we had a lot of asian girls at our school and he would always go around talking to us and making us uncomfortable. And he would talk about his "mail order girlfriend"??? He eventually got banned from all the campuses of our school district. (Not for making all the asian students uncomfortable though. He like showed up to one of the schools drunk apparently.)

I really appreciated the section on lost media. I often think about the shared cultural experience of our generation and what that means going forward as we age and the next generation establishes new cultural memories. Do we keep revisiting the culture of our youth? Do we make new culture? Do we join the emerging culture? It feels a bit listless having all these memories that, once you hit about 30 years old, become a generational time capsule.

I've had a really bad depression spike in the last two years, but I genuinely enjoy watching you two. It's a time when I don't get the feeling you both described in relation to watching other media and narrative shows. It IS how I feel often about all media types. Even with documentaries and stuff in the real world. I'm worried it's related to the "always need to be productive". Because If i watch something with narration, I HAVE to look for all the subtle things about it, what it means, my brain does it seemingly automatically. Maybe it's just the way I pull joy from things? Well either way, at least I do have things I can pull a giggle and a cringe from. Thanks for the content!

Really interesting that Jarvis’s therapist is ok with not seeing him when he’s too sad… when I sit silently in a session my psychiatrist just asks “what are you thinking about?” And I literally say whatever is on my mind - song lyrics, something about work, something about life - and we go from there. His background is in psychoanalysis so the subconscious is everything and, under there model, the times you are too sad are probably when there are difficult truths near the surface that need to be expressed. Hang in there Jarvis.
