I am so glad that you talked about Recreational Therapy, but I would also like to add that in addition to the low pay there really aren't that many jobs only around 3 people from my graduating class got related jobs two years later. I was one of the lucky ones who got a job a month after getting my license in the field. However, I was underemployed. The part that changed my mind about this degree was realizing we were redundant to Occupational Therapy and that most employers don't want you to actually practice Recreational Therapy, but just want you to just run activities. I am now going to graduate school for a counseling degree. I am lucky to have little student debt because I worked during school.

@@ShaneHummus I respect your philosophy of guiding young people towards marketable career paths. Especially at this time, when student loans are at an all time high and competition is greater than ever. I’ve followed this advice for a while, before I burned out due to a lack of interest towards a certain “marketable” field. What this pandemic has taught us, more than anything, is that no job or career path is safe. You’re better off pursuing what you’re interested in. Life is too short to pursue expediency over meaning. English degree doesn’t have huge ROI, job market is very limited. But a positive is the value of understanding linguistics and language is intangible. Now I’m going to more schooling to gain more skills to adequate for the job market. English can be a path for further studies but not 4 years and out.

Nevermind the naysayers. You're doing great work, and this list is important for graduating high school students. Just to go into a little detail, my mom is in early childhood education, and that field is also where you don't need a degree. Although, if you wanted to be a director of an early childhood education school/center, that's possible. Secondly, before going in early childhood education, my mom was a CMA (certified medical assistant). As you said, you don't need a degree, although I could see the field requiring an associates in the future. However, as a medical assistant, you don't usually work with a doctor. The only case that you would is if the doctor had his own practice and the medical assistants would do charts, basic blood work, etc. Basically, work that a nurse learns in the first year of their program. Matter of fact, my sister just graduated as a nurse, and after she finished her first year, she was allowed to be a medical assistant in the state of Texas. Anyways, most medical assistants work along side nurses.

Hey Shane! I ended up getting a undergrad in Public Management & Policy and my graduate degree in Public Admin (just recently), and I work as a Management Analyst and my starting pay is 72k. Mind you my undergraduate and graduate degree was paid for! 22 scholarships will do that! I had no experience in the role, aside from public policy and treasurer experience which landed me a job in analyst work! Also, I think its important to talk about the potential with those 2 degrees I mentioned! HR, Economic Development, Budget Analyst are much easier to get than most people think as those don't require a ton of experience, so long as you have the education part to help supplement (Keeping it in the realm of the public sector), and all of those positions have great start for pay, Public Admin degree's are actually great tbh, even better if you couple that with internship experience. State pay in those roles I mentioned above, are really great! CHEERS!

I think having poor communication skills and lacking assertiveness is an even bigger indicator of not succeeding in college than your major. An extroverted English major who is confident and communicates with people to get a job in journalism or an internship in business will be more successful than an introvert majoring in Computer Science who doesn't reach out to people to show off his/her marketable skills.

Recreational therapy is not a good field to go into. I majored in it for a little bit. Extremely fulfilling but SO underpaid and overworked. Plus it is not well respected or well known and people are often hired to fill these positions without credentials because there is no licensure. Also, I have yet to see this major mentioned: Communication sciences & disorders (sometimes called communicative disorders, pre-speech pathology, speech and hearing sciences). It is a pre-professional degree that is meant to get all of the pre-reqs out of the way for grad school. Speech pathology requires a master's degree and I've heard that the bachelor's is pretty useless except for being an assistant.

Music Therapy is the worst degree. 1. any one can call themselves a MT major (even without a degree) there is no state licensure. 2. Long Music degree with psych and a 6 month (mostly unpaid) internship. 3. few jobs that pay over 30k. 4. Expensive CTEs that you can only get at national conference that costs 300+ to attend. Take a look Shane, you would agree. You got this in Recreation Therapy.

As I did not find a way to directly message you, I want to ask you - if I have a business bachelor and I want to get into computer science, should I go for a second bachelor? A suggestion, slightly related to my question, is to probably make a video for people considering second bachelor, seeing there are quite a few people online which struggle with this choice.
