I don’t think the Nika DF gives Luffy the qualities Mihawk was talking about but the other way around. Luffy’s qualities is what allowed him to unlock those powers. So the Nika fruit seeks people who behave like Luffy since they seem to have their own wills.

I've always interpreted Luffy being able to heal himself via eating meat and grow back teeth via milk as him having mastered Life Return (If you don't remember what that is re read ennies lobby as Kumadori uses it a lot and even Lucci uses it a bit). It would make sense that someone as talented as luffy could figure it out on his own, after all Sanji figured out geppo on his own, another technique that cp9 used.

The way he was bragging about being a Logia while Luffy was "just a paramecia" is even funnier now that we know that the fruit that made Enel look like a fool was part of the group that's widely considered the weakest of the three types, meanwhile Enel's was considered the strongest fruit of the strongest group.

Every Devil Fruit has its limits, even Mythic ones. If we're talking about Toon Force, I don't think Luffy will make it to "The Mask" level (That would be too OP), but I imagine he's around "Tom and Jerry" level.

I think Tom and Jerry level is too low for the use of Toon force. He'll definitely not be as absurd as Bugs or The Mask, but maybe something of the level of other looney toons characters like Wile E. Coyote, or the skunk ( I forgot the full name, it ended with Pew).

Most of the surprise in people, also happened in areas where devil fruits are rare, and devil fruit users rarer still. As Luffy moves forward on his journey, the number of people surprised to see Luffy's power, drops drastically. The latest surprise is from Kaido, claiming Rubber is behaving in a manner not natural to rubber... But there was 0 surprise from everyone on Whole Cake Island concerning Luffy's power, and instead surprise that Luffy not only defeated Cracker, but also Katakuri. On Wano, most of the surprise was in Luffy's Stamina, even with Sea prism stone hindering his use of devil fruit powers. Luffy surprised everyone on fishman island, not because of devil fruit, but because of his strength and speed, despite being "human." Punk Hazard, only the children were surprised by Luffy's Devil Fruit abilities, but that's due to isolation from the rest of the world. Dressrosa, they were suprised by Luffy's resilience. Enel was surprised because Luffy was a natural counter to lightning. Amazon Lilly, isolation, and lies by the Boa sisters. Mink's home, surprised their static discharge wasn't affecting Luffy, not about the devil fruit ability itself.

It makes sense considering his devil fruit requires him to make physical contact with his limbs. On paper, his devil fruit puts him at a huge disadvantage because he can lose his limbs if he makes a bad move (like when he tried to punch Mihawk, both of his arms would have been cut off)

The greatest clue about the ridiculous aspect of the fruit and the "imagination is necessary to get the best out of it" is in the battle against Katakuri. Luffy literally imagines his arms as cobras and commands them to chase Katakuri which the arms did. That is a clear foreshadowing of whatever Luffy imagines can be done with the fruit.

Observation can keep count of the speed and angle and future vision could a planned all it ahead to make it seem alive.

Something similar may have happened during the timeskip, like Luffy fell to despair after losing Ace and then stumbled upon Gear 4, but couldn't control it properly because he didn't have basic Haki training.

Luffy was given the base form of rubber because Oda's inspiration for the fruit animation style literally called "RUBBER hose animation". If you look back to every incarnation of Nika that Oda has drawn it's in the same style as rubber hose animation as well, where the defining feature is rubber hose like limbs that generally look like flowing curves instead of actual limbs with elbows and knees.... Oda is a genius and I'm always so blown away from his thought process for this series

There actually is real world lore to support luffys powers. It’s just not well known. The short of it is this: there are trees called banyan trees. Banyan trees are known to produce rubber. In some cultures, banyan trees are called wish granting trees. There is an island in India with a banyan wishing tree. It is known as the Nika wishing tree. It was said that magical creatures inhabited the tree. The magical creatures were able to communicate with all things, animals, stars, plants, etc. aside from this, they could also hear the dreams and wishes of humans. Since I started one piece I speculated that Luffys fruit was more then just rubber. Wasn’t fully sure what it would be. But I just thought it was like the concept of rubber and “bouncing back” or rebounding. To me it seemed like he was bending probability, the will of others, the social constraints in the world etc… to me it didn’t just seem like a physical rubber ability alone… like it stretched (excuse the pun) more into the metaphorical concept of rubber, and stretching what one would consider “normal” he literally bends the world to his whim.

If that is the case, I think that it is also quite interesting that anime art style on Wano is composed of dark black streaks, like a brush with ink. Infact, an inked portrait of Luffy is how the crew on Wano find out Luffy arrived in the country.

I love how every narrative aspect of luffy has to be chalked up to his devil fruit instead of just neatly following the theme of rubber, red hawk is caused by friction induced through haki, luffy’s powers aren’t just he can imagine anything and it happens, it only applies to his rubbery body going beyond human limits. I been thinking that the 800 years of not being able to keep the fruit revealed some insight on why they didn't chase luffy down the second they found out about it. They haven't been able to keep the fruit for 800 years and absolutely nothing happened from it. Heck, they had bigger pirates to fry that were actually active threats. So the government probably thought this was another round of losing the fruit and getting it back with no repercussions. Edit: forgot I made this post and got a random notification from a like. Two months later and it makes less and less sense that the government didn't chase after luffy since the beginning unless they didn't count it as a threat. With the government spy network they should know the fruit is completely lost and you can't tell me that after a world newborn baby genocide in an effort to kill ace just because of the threat of Gol D Roger's bloodline being a possibility of a threat, well, 100% as soon as luffys fruit was lost the world government would make marines at least start pinching everyone's checks and pass it off as a quirky greeting for citizens to see if they stretch to find a devil fruit if they suspect it to be a more legitimate threat to the government. If the government really lost the fruit, knew that it could be their downfall and waited until it came to them. That would be the first time reading one piece I would be massively disappointed in the series narrative. But after well over 1000 chapters hitting it out of the park, I guess one thing being a let down is massively impressive.

If you go back and look, basically at every step of the way that Luffy has been a known pirate in possession of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, he has been actively pursued by some of the heaviest hitters under the authority of the World Government. He just beat them or evaded them every single time. He defeated 2 warlords, who are employed almost specifically to combat Emperors. He "evaded" Aokiji. He defeated CP9, declared war, and evaded the Buster Call. He "evaded" Garp. He "evaded" Kuma. Evaded Kizaru and the Pacafista, and "evaded" Kuma yet again. Broke into Impel Down and evaded Magellan. He managed to make it through the entirety of Marineford with several Warlords, Vice Admirals, Admirals, and even Sengoku pursuing him, then rolled up to Marine HQ to declare a new era alongside a former Warlord and the Dark King himself. The Government HAS been trying to get Luffy basically since they learned who he was. They've just failed at every step of the way either because Luffy proved to be much stronger than they anticipated, or because Luffy had help from outside forces that he convinced to assist or ignore him.

After the recent revelation I have a theory regarding what Rocks D. Xebec’s devil fruit was. Basically I was thinking it would be the antithesis of luffy’s hito hito no mi model: nika, so basically instead of a god of joy & liberation it is a god of despair, destruction and anarchy. I especially like this theory because of 1- the fact that Blackbeard's Devil Fruit doesn't behave like a proper Logia (he is still tangible, it exacerbates his pain and suffering), and 2- the fact that Teach was set up fron the first time we met him (which was coincidentally-or-maybe-not just before Skypeia) as Luffy's polar opposite. The whole pie/juice scene, the fact that Luffy is really young and Blackbeard is relatively old, Luffy eats enough food to feed a small country, but is still super fit, while Teach isn't seen eating that often and is basically spherical and has half of his teeth missing, etc.

Honestly, I would argue that there is a very simple in-world explanation for why the Nika fruit generally manifested as rubber powers, and it comes down to how the fruit's true powers work. In it's most fundamental form, the Nika fruit allows it's user to manifest what they can imagine into reality, such as how Luffy manifested fire into his attacks after Ace's death. Given this, it's entirely reasonable that if you were to give that fruit to someone who doesn't know what it can truly do, and convince them it will turn their body to rubber, then the powers will manifest as if it turned their body to rubber, since that it what they imagine the fruit is capable of. And you don't have to use rubber, either, as it could work with anything; such as convincing someone it will allow them to manifest infinite quantities of cotton candy, and viola, they can produce infinite quantities of cotton candy. It is simply a combination of how the fruit's true powers work, and the deception the World Government established regarding the fruit's nature; the powers of the fruit manifested as "rubber body" simply because everyone was convinced that's what it would do.

I agree. That's something I have not seen anyone touch upon. Zoans (and perhaps all DFs) have a will, that's confirmed. But they don't overwrite the person. They, more like... acompany them. I think Chopper is the best example. His fruit's power is "just" to be a human. But even in his full human point (Heavy), he's still covered in fur, he does't turn into a human. Even more, post skip, his Heavy Point is even less human-y, and someone (I think Robin) asked him if it was ok to look less human, and hr says yes, bc he wanted to help Luffy. Toons back then were refered to as "Rubber Toons" because of there Bendy and Buoyant appearances and gags across their respective series. One infamous Rubber-Toon you might know of Liam is "Popeye the Sailor Man". Whenever the goings were tough, Popeye + One can of spinach defied even Gods!! Well I think you might be jumping the gun Luffys power seems to be more still in rubber form rather than God like power More cartoonistian nature yes definitely brings a smile on everyone's face of course but the limitations of the fruits are still limited I think his power probably is more Inclined to temporarily turn everything around him including himself into a indoor rubber form of itself Which explains how we're able to bounce kydo's blast breath off of the piece of rubble that he picked up as well as being able to whip kido around like a freaking rubber hose This power could also explain how hes able to give his elastic properties to other people when the situation calls for it like when they eat so much food their bodies turn into giant rubber balls it explains for luffy hes a rubber boy but how do you explain it for all the other people who've gotten super fat and it's such a short amount of time unless luffy is temporarily giving them rubber abilities

As for your rubber question, google “Olmec” - they were an Aztec race known for their rubber. Aztecs, sun, gods…it all fits together. Nika is fictional in name but still based off a REAL concept.

I think the name comes from the mythological Mayan sun deity known as Kinich Ahau whom before the 16th century was referred to as Ah' Kin "God Sun/Day" or "God of the Sun/Day" which backwards would be spelled out as Nik 'Ha "Sun God"

I remember way back during the Dressrosa arc, when we first learnt about devil fruit awakening, I used to make theories about Luffy's. One of these theories was that he could give the properties of rubber to objects around him and I dismissed it immediately because I thought Oda wouldn't do sth like that. Boy was I wrong.

@@cheesvr3577 Not necessarily. Foxy's fruit for example could be upgraded in many ways. For example 1) his beams instead of slowing things could stop time, 2)create a field around him that slows things, 3)longer slows or bigger range, etc. There are many ways a paramecia could be upgraded.

I mean he dishes out more physical trauma than Batman but everyone who he beats to near death, is always shown perfectly fine sometime later like they didn't receive broken bones or shattered organs.

Isn't that just potentially in the purely awakened form? There should be no real effect on anything else without that. The only people mentioning awakening so far are the Gorosei, so maybe that's where the disconnect comes from. Anyway I just take it as OP is a cartoon itself, which accounts for stuff like that.

Sengoku has a mythical human human fruit. He only has one transformation; the awakened form of the golden statue, which would be the fruits god spirit. Otherwise, the fruit just granted him spiritual enlightenment, and, evidently, zoan-type physical strength. Seems to be similar for Luffy, the Nika fruit grants the rubber body, and Nikas will, but functionally a paramecia with zoan strength and healing factor until the God form is awakened and then limiters are off. Makes sense that neither would have a hybrid form since they are humans. I believe Luffys other gears were actually his manipulation of the rubber body with haki, just as he thought it was; not actual zoan forms though. The Gear 5 is the only actual body transformation that seems to change the actual properties of the body at baseline, to stronger/stretchier. But I'm not totally convinced that we are going to see 'toon powers' or manifest reality stuff. I think it's just going to be rubber. EXTRA rubber ignoring laws of physics, but still pretty much rubber, with the smiling contagious will, and some firey haki thrown in. It's gonna be drawn looney-toon esque because it's just that cartoony of a body and moveset and that's how Oda likes to draw. Goofy stuff in One Piece has always looked this goofy this is just the first time Odas pulled it out in a main fight climax. But seems like we gonna be getting used to that more now, haha.

The official viz translation that changed 'limited only by his imagination, its the most ridiculous power', to 'gaining more freedom and able to fight any way he fancies, it's the most ridiculous power' is what killed the toon force theory for me. I think taking the specific word imagination out in favor of describing fighting style freedom, makes me think it's much more likely just rubber, but, no laws of physics anymore for it.

Shanks has always been working with the government. His job was to hide the fruit in general. Luffy was rubber because Shanks said he was. He hid the real fruit from luffy. Hiding the fruit in a person who didnt know what it was.

It would also make sense why he gave up his arm to stop the fruit from going somewhere else. I'm not dispelling that Shanks is working for world government. Plausible theory by the way. My argument is that the rubber properties are innate part of the fruit and are not from luffy's initial imagination. The Elders even called it the gomu gomu fruit before they went on to expand on its true nature.

Admittedly, while I love the pay-off to this new transformation on so many levels, it DOES open up a lot of questions regarding how what was previously just the "Gum Gum Fruit" is perceived upon re-reading or re-watching the story. While there are a lot of set-ups and foreshadowing to this reveal, it is admittedly hard to see Luffy as the underdog he was throughout most of the story instead just the potential God-like figure he would eventually become. It's also not hard to see Luffy's previous fights where he hasn't tapped into his fruit's true abilities in a less significant light, even though I don't necessarily see it like that. It's all still a lot to process. By the way, is the thumbnail supposed to reference anything in particular?
