Rigurd changed so drastically because his life span increased. He was an old goblin, but a Hobgoblin in his prime years. His age didn´t change, but his years of life to live changed.

It's stated in the manga that, while evolution has some set paterns (goblins => Hobgoblins, Ogre => Kishin, etc...) the appearance they end up with after being named also depend of their own inner desires. Souka for example ended up looking almost completely human because of her crush on Souhei and her desire to catch his eye. Rigurd, being chief of the goblins despite being old and weak, secretely yearned for the strength his position needed, thus why he became so physically fit after his naming ritual.

A lot of people do not see that this also applies to the other male lizardmen that were ones part of the Lizard Kng's royal guards. Aside from Soiuka, there are two more male lizardmen that evolved to look more closely resembling a human, not because they had a crush on Sohei, but they admired him during his appearance at the throne room. Also it is noy because they wanted to be "human", but more like they wanted to closely resemble Sohei. This also appliies to why Gabiru and his lackeys looked more draconian, because he was excessively proud of the legnds that Lizardmen were descendants of dragons.

I think Gobta´s lack of visual change after naming stems from his low ambition and pretty much lazyness at the begining of the anime/LN. At first hes just go with the flow guy without any real aspirations or worries and starts changing mostly after first trip to Dwargon.

Gobta isn't lazy at all, in fact he's the only goblin that goes to Dwargon on his own before Rimuru shows up. He's made the trip multiple times, if you remember when they arrived and those humans tried to pick a fight, he said this happened the last time. Lazy, nah not him. He's a kid, a very on the spectrum one. He's a savant randomly but doesn't like standing out, but at times there's no choice and he flips situations on their head. He might be the physical manifestation of Veldoras Faust.

@@evilformerlys4704 Lazy is terrible wording from me since i couldnt figure better term. But as you said, at the beginning he had his own pace and was free spirited, with no real ambition. Perfectly showcased how he spent entirety of his time as Dwargon prisoner sleeping. No worry, no real want, just floating through life. Thats why i think he didnt really evolve physically at the beginning, when he had a chance, but started getting stronger at surprisingly fast rate when he put his mind into it (or was forced by Hakurou).

It's not mentioned as much in the anime but the individual roles Rimuru assign his subordinates affects them too. For example Rigurd as one of the earliest subordinates was assigned as the Goblin Chief and later on the Goblin King. And wasn't named based on Rimuru but Rigurd's own son Rigur that passed away, Rimuru even recycle that name as he named his remaining son as Rigur.

In tenshura, a monster who was named has some factors of how they evolve: by their desires, by how their benefactor desires and last is how it was supposed to be. To those who's desire is their will, they gain it if the requirements is achieved: the benefactor's strength, a proper evolution process and the monster's desires . This how the examples of rigurd, souka,kumara and gobwa.In contrast, this also implied by the benefactor too just as the 1st one only that it was the benefactor's desires. Examples are benimaru and the other kijins.and lastly the natural one in which it was the normal or simply following was was the evolution of their race was. Examples of it was gabiru,ranga,geld,apito and zegion(this guys just follows the way of evolution but for gabiru, apito and zegion, they also implied the first one but their desires is for them to become a strong and reliable to rimuru.)

Simple as that. ;) (the movie is not canon as well)._* In Light Novel (the original source, therefore the only true canon), some Hobgoblins and Goblina evolved into Ogres and became Benimaru's strike force. It is the "gift" their received during Limule's awakening as a demon lord. (the moment every monsters of Limule's "lineage" fell asleep in "Season 2 - Part 1, Episode 11" ... this is at that moment these hobgoblins and goblina evolved into Ogres) ... Also, at the moment, Benimaru and other Kijin also evolved and became "Oni" (even if their appearance didn't change). "Mystic Oni" for Benimaru, Shuna, Soei, Hakuro, Kurobe and "Wicked Oni" for Shion (because resurrected with part of daemon's magicule). Goblins are Ogre whose blood purity degenerated over generations. *Also... If you had paid attention to the story, you would know that the Ogre village was annihilated in season 1 and the only survivors were Benimaru, Shuna, Shion, Hakuro, Soei and Kurobe.* _Only these 6 ogre survived in the light novel_ It exist other kind of "ogres" in the light novel, but these ones are stupid brute closer to mindless animals (very very very primitive). The only sentient ogres in the story are from the village of Benimaru or evolved hobgoblins and goblina. (in fact, Benimaru's village became civilized because of Hakuro's grandfather, who was a japanese otherworlder, civilized them few centuries ago... ==> Hakuro's gandfather came from sengoku era in Japan ... it is the reason they have katana and japanese-like culture)
