Here’s the story of a picnic that got interrupted by a major American Civil War battle.
I recently went to the site of it. It’s quite a lovely area, honestly. About 30 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. in northern Virginia. Today, it’s so peaceful, but on July 21, 1861, it was the site of horrifying death and destruction. But let’s back up a bit. Three months prior was the Battle of Fort Sumter near Charleston, South Carolina. A new country had seceded from the United States called the Confederate States of America. On April 13, 1861, some rebel Confederate soldiers had successfully taken over an American fort, marking the beginning of the American Civil War . It was after the bombardment of Fort Sumter that all of a sudden there was widespread support from both the North and South to fight.
President Abraham Lincoln declared that the Southern states that seceded had broken the law, essentially calling it an insurrection. In response, 750,000 men volunteered to fight the rebels. Many of them had no military experience whatsoever.
Americans seemed pumped up, man. Horace Greeley’s New York Tribune proclaimed “Forward to Richmond! The Rebel Congress must not be allowed to meet there on the 20th of July!” By the way, Richmond, Virginia, was now the capital of the newly formed Confederate States of America. Many Americans believed that capturing Richmond would quickly end the insurrection. By July, thousands of volunteers had camped in Washington, D.C., excited to fight as part of what became known as the Union Army, or Northern Army.
Lincoln, realizing he had to take bold action, picked an inexperienced major named Irvin McDowell to lead around 35,000 men down to Richmond. It would be the largest field army ever gathered on the North American continent up to that point.

I love military history, is probably what got me invested in the ACW in the first place (alongside the Ken Burns documentary),and consequently your channel. Would be great for some more!!! ACW military history content is surprisingly sparse on YT, with the only big videos coming to mind being the American Battlefield trust's animated battle maps and the Gettysburg NPS video tours. I think vlogging through history is similarly visiting major battle sites as well.

While we are divided today and a recent president, in my opinion, made it even worse, there are still no clear dividing battle lines. Most of our substantial divides are nonsense culture war muck that gets exacerbated by the media and social media. We're no where near an actual civil war.

Mr. Beat, thanks for the video. I live in Northern Virginia and have visited the Manassas National Battlefield Park numerous times. If you ever do a more detailed video on the 2nd Battle of Manassas (2nd Battle of Bull Run), something that might be interesting to point out and show, possibly using a Park map, is how much larger the battlefield was for the 2nd Battle of Manassas than for the 1st Battle of Manassas. I think the difference in size between the two battlefields conveys just how much bigger the armies in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War had become between 1861 and 1862. As visitor the Manassas National Battlefield Park, you are indirectly made aware of this, by the fact that you can pretty much see all of the important sites of the 1st Battle of Manassas by walking less than 100 yards in several directions from visitor center and looking around. In contrast, to see all of the important sites of the 2nd Battle of Manassas, most people take a car to visit the various driving tour stops.

Reminds me of the English Civil war to the degree where everyone thought it would be over after one big battle. However there was no clear winner after Edgehill ( the first major battle of the English war, unlike the CSA victory ) the war turned into a prolongued slugfest. Id also argue that in the history of the United Kingdom. We are still living with the effects of the civil war and it is the most important military engagement in our nations hiistory as we still live with its affects 400 years later, especially Ireland and Scotland. It seems to me rhe american civil war is the most important event in american history, that is once you became independent.

@@caseclosed9342 yeah england is extremely important to rule of law/ democracy You’ve got Common Law System (started by Henry II) but Alfred before him and Richard III after him are also important parts. Magna Carta Oxford Provisions (the first parliaments under Simon de Montfort) English Civil War, which directly coincides with Glorious Revolution (monarchs absolute power diminished) Did the founding fathers view Cromwell more of a hero than a tyrant then? The Right answer is probably a mix of both (like some of the fathers - slave owning ones- themselves one might say)

Man nice job on this one mr beat I was actually doing a bit of research on the first battle of bull run and I thought it was pretty interesting that the second one was at the exact same location I also found out that one of my relatives was part of the Rhode Island militia during that time and actually fought in the battle so that’s pretty awesome as well but ya honestly i would like to see more of this honestly especially the convo that the union general and Jackson had I found that to be of piticular interest

Also, the train mobilization bit is very important in European history. It's one of the reason Prussia overwhelmed the French and united Germany. Many nations actually send attaches to see what modern tactics can be used. They weren't impressed by the Americans, other than utilization of modern trains and ships.

Have you heard the theory that the nickname "Stonewall" may have actually been an insult? The theory goes that General Bee, frustrated by Jackson's refusal to move his troops to come help him, decided to abandon all hope in Jackson and save his own men. Apparently his quote "there he stands like a stone wall" was him deciding that Jackson's brigade was so useless that it'd be better to think of them as a feature of the battlefield rather than an actual combat force. So he was instructing his men to hide behind the Virginians, who were never going to move and come help them, and save themselves. Then he was shot and killed and the rest is history. I only recently heard about this and, while very interesting, seems kinda suspect to me...way too interesting to be real. Like almost suspiciously interesting, if that makes any sense. Just wondering if you had heard this theory and if you had any thoughts about it.

Perhaps you should add a follow up video to this on the roll of both railroads in the Civil War and the fact that the Confederates named their battles after railroad junctions. For instance First Bull Run in the South/Confederacy was known as First Manassas after the railroad junction. You should also do a video on Wilmer McClain who was able to say "The War began in my front yard and ended in my front parlor." He had moved to Appomattox Courthouse by 1865.

I did some research not too long ago and found out on my mother's father's ancestors fought in one of the battles of Bull Run. I want to say it was this one though I need to go through the documents again. He fought with a New Hampshire regiment.

You should mention that many of the soldiers who died during the Civil War did not actually die in battle. Probably a third of those men died from disease and accidents. I do genealogy. I have found relatives who died from pneumonia and dysentery. Another relative drowned in a river while crossing it on his horse. Another relative died from starvation at Andersonville. Very few of them actually took a bullet while in battle.

Went to Guinea Station where the eccentric but badass General Stonewall Jackson died. Speaking of which she also said she had family who lived and worked at Mt Vernon. I think what was really interesting about the Battle of Bull Run was the variety of uniforms the Confederates wore. Heck, there were even troops that wore Revolutionary War era uniforms.

Moore ordered Alabama troops to seize three federal installations in the state - the arsenal at Mount Vernon, and Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines. Louisiana State Militia forces seized the powder magazine in Baton Rouge, LA and rest of the arsenal on January 10, 1861. January 24th 1861 Georgia militia siezed Augusta Arsena

I think it was a War of Aggression from the North and the South. The South did start the war and the North spent four years trying to invade the South. They only spent two battles defending Northern soil at Antietam and Gettysburg

Something I wonder about a lot is: Is it better for American history long term that the Civil War dragged on for so long? On one hand, way way more people died and it's a horrible thing that that happened. On the other hand, if it was a swift Union victory then the war might not resulted in the abolition of slavery since there was less desire to punish the South early in the war.

There was a misleading line in this video about Confederates choosing not to press their advantage and seize DC. They couldn't have. Some reasons: 1) its army was just as exhausted as Union forces, 2) the Union forces were still between the Rebs and DC with control of the road, 3) rain, have you seen how high Cub Run gets even today in a good rain? (actually there is a picture of it after the battle looking like a soggy WW1 no man's land), 4) Union forces had control of the heights on VA side across from DC, and 5) the Rebs would not have been able to cross the wide Potomac near DC as Point of Rocks & Harper's Ferry (both places they later crossed) are way up stream.

In my opinion I think if Mcclellan was in that battle he would at least not have the army routed because he would push once then go on the def and call for men and say he's out number =)
