Enjoy the content and love me some Lima beans. I used to look forward to football season (college, Florida Gators) but it's just not the same now, frustrating 😑 Great video 👍

Trying some fava beans for the first time. zone 8a. You ever though about selling tshirts with a pocket? I find a shirt pocket to be very handy in the garden: packets of seeds, plant ties, labels, etc.

We have. But all the shirts with pockets are pretty heavy and not near as soft as the ones we have.

Do you only shell all lima varieties, or can you eat pod like on green beans when time is right?
@gardeningwithhoss

yes, we shell them

The pods are not very good and probably have too much cyanide in them to be a pleasant taste. You should only eat the beans inside the pod. The best way to cook them is to pressure cook them. Hope that helps!

Actually grew some this year. Two varieties, and was pretty pleased for my 1st time. Did the Christmas, and King of Garden lima beans. I cooked them in crockpot, similar to how I been doing black eyed peas, and turned out pretty awesome. Im pretty sure guys that say they hate lima beans would of wanted seconds.@@Kathywake23

@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill There is some new research that lima beans (and other types of beans) need to be cooked at boiling or other higher temp (think pressure cooking) to remove the lectins. Penn State has a good article called "Dry Beans -- a pantry staple" about the temperatures needed. They don't mention lima beans, which have cyanide in them, but the processing is the same.

@@Kathywake23 They get to a boil/simmer in a crock pot. Some things are actually good for you in small amounts as well. Many seeds actually have some benefits, one being fighting against cancer, and I'm sure other ailments as well. That's most likely one reason you are supposed to eat the fruits and their seeds. I know you got to get dry beans cooked well, when your eating them, its by the bowl vs just a few might be ok. Gen 1:29

Good video Travis. I’m in zone 7 - middle TN. Can I plant my rattle snake beans & Christmas Lima beans now? Thanks. 👍

Might be a little too late up there. Probably want to focus on cool-season crops at this point.

I'm in north Ga zone 7a and I wouldn't. they would likely just start flowering when the first frost rolls in.

Hey Travis that complete fertilizer I put down with some collards and some cabbage, in your opinion do you think that will be enough to supplement those crops or should I shoot them with some of that blue magic 20-20-20 just curious what you would do. I didn't put them on drip.
@gardeningwithhoss

I would give them some 20-20-20 as well. Hard to overfeed cabbage -- especially if you want big ones.

Travis will you be putting your 20-20-20 fertilizer on your pole beans?

Unless they start looking like they need some nutrients, I won't.
