My father, who is 91 and not doing well today, was a jazz enthusiast. In our home, especially in the 60s, we listened to Miles, Parker, Clifford Brown, Brubeck, Bill Evans, Coltrane, Monk, etc. But I recall an album by Joe Henderson, "OUR THING," 1963. Nice going Kenny! Thank you!

Kenny, the whole reason a lot of us click onto these channels is because we’re trying to learn about music that either we were too young to know or weren’t born yet. The beautiful thing about KZbin is if you want to get musically curious you can get on here and dabble in things that you weren’t exposed to when you just had radio. We appreciate individuals such as yourself who are knowledgeable and those of us who are probably your same age who want to expand our musical horizons. Thank you for all that you do you’re a sage and for those of us out here your wisdom is the whole reason were even on KZbin at times to seek out musical advice and find out what we missed.

I recall that the movie “Round Midnight” when it came out. It got TWO THUMBS UP from Siskel & Ebert kzbin.info/www/bejne/emrSqIGabc58iNE Gene Siskel was correct, it was a bridge/stepping stone into artistry of other musicians from what I call the classical jazz period ‘Bebop’ - Ben Webster and Stanley Turrentine. It was the 80s and back then Jazz was very contemporary 70s-80s. This movie made you appreciate more of 50-60s sound of Jazz. Nice channel. Liked and subscribed

I just discovered you right this second. You’re my kindred spirit brother. I have a 10,000 piece vinyl collection I started when I was 12 and that was 40 years ago. Also I’m a jazz musician and I know a ton about films. Man I’d like to chop it up with you. Interesting choice for underrated jazz record. Great choice. It won an Oscar that year and very controversial I must say. It beat out Ennio Morricone for his score of the Roland Joffe/Robert Deniro film The Misson.

What an impressive album collection he has-and the equipment he listed...this stuff use to be so easily and readily available in stores going back just 20-25 years ago-now you can't find a one of these anywhere; even online it's hard to find what you're looking for(if you're familiar with hi-fi equipment)-and even then, it'll cost you an arm and a leg, which was not the case when this stuff was available to purchase in stores years ago... I miss the sound of real music booming from your system-with not just loudness, but clarity; could hear it when one was walking past one's house as the music was playing from their stereo system; I remember how Mary Wilson of The Supremes once said how back in the days, if peoples' stereo systems were tuned to the same radio station, you could hear the music IN STEREO, because as you were walking past their houses, on the one side of the street their radio or system would be tuned to a station while across the street or a few houses down you could hear the other person tuned to the same station-and it was like being in the middle of a live concert! I remember those days...nowadays the music(if it can be called that)is BOOMING AND RATTLING, coming from this younger generations' cars; sounds like the paneling or doors are going to fall off from all of that rattling-it's that loud-and what is that doing to their ears? 8-23-24.

Hey Kenny. I saw Round Midnight in a theatre in Chicago when it was released. Dexter shone in that movie, despite (as I understand it at least) never having acted previously. To get the full impact of the soundtrack nothing beats the Criterion Collection blu-ray in surround. You're right: this is a great soundtrack album, and a great jazz album in its own rite. I love when people have best/favorite/most underrated lists that are different from my personal choices. It's a good way to either learn about artists I haven't heard of before or get a new perspective on artists I've slept on. People who only want to see content that validates everything they already feel are uninteresting bores. Respect for staying true to your own sense of taste.

Haha! I knew from when you mentioned Herb and Gordon at the beginning that you were going for the Round Midnight soundtrack. My fiance and I found it earlier this year and I couldn't agree more (although I have a different take on most underrated)--I unfortunately have not seen the movie yet, but the soundtrack is simply incredible. I'll need to think more about most underrated, but one I might throw out there is Legrand Jazz. The line-up is similarly incredible and Legrand's composing/arranging is next level. It proves how right the French filmmakers Jacques Demy was to put Legrand's name side-by-side with Duke, Mingus, and Basie as one of the great conductors/composers. Let me also say that I've been following your channel for a few months now. As a young brotha from Philly it means a lot to hear someone who sounds like they could be an uncle! Keep on keeping on Unc Kenny!

For most underrated, I'll say for now Bobby Timmons, Born to Be Blue!

Theres so many great albums I could recommend. Wish I'd starting collecting years ago when rare jazz and not so rare jazz weren't at crazy prices. Thats a beautiful collection 🥲

I actually saw the movie while I was in the military. I had both of those albums lost them while going through a divorce. My ex got rid of my lifelong collection af Jazz records while I was on deployment. seeing you highlight those two albums was kind of hard for me. I enjoyed them both. The movie was excellent also. unfortunately there is no appetite for music or movies like that now. A great societal tragedy in my opinion. Please keep the music alive.

I’m gonna throw some love to my favorite male vocal jazz album: The very well-known Johnny Hartman & John Coltrane. Give it a listen if you’ve never heard it. You will fall in love with Johnny Hartman‘s voice. And how often can you say about an album-“ oh, and it also has John Coltrane on it”!🤣🤣

It's in my collection, great choice as Hartman's voice is amazing 👏 👏

Very interesting video. I am Ignorant about youtube's copyright rules but, instead of just showing album covers I really wish you could play some short samples of these LPs. Every jazz record I Ever listen to. I always compare them to "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis.💙🎧

I do not play music at risk of having my video removed and/or being suspended from youtube, it's simply not worth the risk.

I thought one was in the clear as long as the clip is 8 seconds or shorter- I must be misinformed…

Great video. I revisited the movie Round Midnight about a year ago, and it holds up well. Dexter was one of the coolest cats to ever walk the earth! I never owned the soundtrack but the music in the film is phenomenal. I need to pick this up. That’s a crazy lineup!
