Killer amps. I was in a band with this dude Ben Eller years ago and we was running through one and it sounded so good. He barely had to use any gain. Super clear. He ran a fish n chips eq in the loop as well and that added even more of the goods to it. 😁

This is an amp that definitely could use a reissue/re-release. Extremely underappreciated amp. Everyone immediately thinks 5150 when you mention Peavey, but the XXX sounded just as good for high gain stuff and even had a more usable clean channel. I never had the head, but I had the 2x12 120w combo. I ended up selling it because I didn't love the XXX labelled sheffields that were in it, and I never got around to swapping them out for better speakers since I already had other amps at the time. I've played the heads quite a few times, I have multiple friends who had them and swore by them. Now, this thing is without a doubt one of the best bang for buck high gain amps out there on the used market. If you can find one for under $700, definitely worth.

The bottom amp is exactly what I did to mine, black hex grill with a peavey lightning logo under it. I put a 12at7 in v1 and a 5751 in the phase inverter and it really cleaned up the gain and made it much more smooth/less fizzy. I experimented with El34s and 6L6s, both sound great. Currently have EL34s and I like the throaty mid range but with the 6L6s it thumps so tightly. I also run it in stereo with a Peavey 4x12ms and an oversized mesa v30 cab. Sometimes I slave my crate gx130c into the xxx too. I'm happy to own "different" gear.

Wonderful amp ! I totally ignored it when it came out as I started to play guitar and bought a 5150. Last year, after watching this video and others, I gave this amp a try and found one used. Wow, that was a good idea ! One of the best high gain amps I played with ! Tons of gain, but still the sound is clear and the overall noise level is surprisingly low for a Peavey amp (especially compared to the 5150 that was awful). Great lows, aggressive palm mutes and kickass modern sound. I tamed the gain and noise with a Mullard CV4004 in V1 and 5751 in V2, and put a Tung Sol ECC803S in V3. Sounds MASSIVE in my Harley Benton V30 cab! I have a LOT of fun with this 550€ rig. Had to retube the power section (JJ 6L6GC) because 1 of the stock Ruby was dead. Compares very well with my other amps (5153 Stealth and Engl Fireball 100). One thing I learned about tube amps is : get your tubes TESTED ! The stock JJs in my 5153 weren't good ... but AWESOME (gain factor rated 130-150% !!!). Tried to swap some tubes, but I ended with the stock tubes back in. Tung Sol tubes are hard to find now and the price severely took off due to the Ukraine war. Very sad, because I really loved New Sensor Saratov factory tubes (especially the new Svetlana and Mullard re-issues and the Tung Sols). What makes a LOT of difference in the end is the cabinet you use. The XXX sounded fizzy in my HESU Demon 212, but really great in the much cheaper HB V30 cab. On the other end, my ENGL FB100 sounds way too scooped in my V30 cab and a lot more full and articulate in the HESU. So, I matched my 3 heads with a dedicated cab for best results. I'm a happy man now ! Thanks Kyle for your entertaining and instructive videos! Cheers from France

Triple xxx with damping set on tight preset is almost same signal curve as 6505 with presence on 9 and resonance on 7. Anyway. Crunch channel on triple xxx is best channel of a whole amp. Jsx has this channel as ultra channel with FAT switch ON. It's a same channel. But the JSX has secret weapon. If is FAT switch OFF it cuts lower mids before gain so you must set gain little bit higher and bass too but then it has more bite and it's tighter because signal before distortion is more narrow now. I know these things because I own 3120 and JSX :D Another difference is in mid knob. 3120 has more aggressive mids. They can be more cutted or more boosted. For a same amount of mids 3120 has 2/10 and JSX has them on 4.5/10 . Almost identical channels but with fat switch off has the JSX more aggression in distortion.

Bro! I love that we have a similar ear in tone. I heard the DV77's and within 2 seconds I was like, dear lort, NO! It has the weird mid range, that has that "paper" sound of the G1275T. That hollowness that's no good. The Friedman sounded the best, hands down. PROTIP: If you have the 3ch combo version of the TripleXXX, remove the reverb tube, and then the upper range of the knob acts like a another presence knob, tapping into another freq range that the "ch vol" and "pres knob" don't have. With all 4 "top end knobs" (Hair, Pres, Ch Vol, Reverb) the TripleXXX becomes one of my favorite amps. I know this might sound a little "not sane", but it can nip at the heals of the that Marshall type "top end", which IMO makes this amp slice through the mix like a blow torch through a stick of butter. Another great video, Kyle! Thank you for your time and efforts, which helps the heavier guitar tone community. 🐴

I used to have one of these amps but had to sell it as it was too loud (100W) for domestic use, so I'm happily getting by with my Randall RD40C combo. FWIW, the Peavey XXX had more gain than my Randall, as well as that killer Peavey EQ section. The only reason that made me sadly part with it was the sheer power and loudness from the XXX. My verdict: If you have somewhere that you safely can blast out the Peavey, as God and Nature intended (it IS a 100W amp, after all), then go for it, and get one - if it's HIGH GAIN that you are looking for, with a good EQ to tame the output, then you will certainly not be disappointed with the Peavey XXX. ALSO: Thank you, Kyle, for bringing this hidden classic back to our attention.

Will never get rid of mine, had it since 2007....got the full stack when I bought it. I find that the EL34's are better to my ears. With a noise gate and an EQ in the effects loop(which helps sculpt the tone to perfection), it's hard to beat this amp. The Ultra(red channel) gives a nice modern hi gain tone, the Crunch(orange channel) gives me an ENGL vibe. You find one, don't pass it up.

Happy to find this - I have a 3120 which is the XXX reissue but with EL34 instead. I also swapped out the V1 but with a 12at7 from the stock 12ax7 for the exact same reason, to have a bit more ccontrol. Also definitely agree about the switch on Loose - never liked the other settings.

I changed out the EL34's in mine a couple of days ago and put a nice set of EH 6L6's in it. I love it even more now. The RL34's gave it a midrange bite that overpowered the low A minor on my 7 string. The 6L6's fixed that problem and my drop A minor 7 string now sounds mean AF.

By active EQ I think what it means is you can boost the frequencies and even get a resonant peak. Though I do personally prefer to keep all of the bass middle treble at noon or just below. If you put the bass at 6 it might get a little boomy but that can get the cab involved at lower volumes.
