Moria is a great portrait of what failed ambition can do to someone with immense talent and a lacking will. He is ambition without tenacity, emphasized by leaning on comfort and control after the trauma of losing the crew he loved. He would rather hold onto the past than move forward and improve to reclaim his dream. His laziness is a biproduct of his broken ass fruit and his depression manifesting into indifference, as long as he can do what he pleases in Paradise and steal the shadows of those unfortunate souls that wind up at Thriller Bark, he is content. A big fish that could have been way bigger if he worked on his ambition and overcame his losses. Idk how one can view Moria as anything other than a testament to Oda's writing ability, especially because this is done mostly through show and not tell. Its all delivered through mannerisms, facial expressions, and character traits, not entirely through exposition. While Thriller Bark is not in any way the best arc, it is still a good one for me, especially because Moria is one of the most interesting villains for me personally due to how Oda wrote him. Absalom is still absolutely trash and a blight on the arc.

Re-reading/ re-watching One Piece always makes you appreciate things different. Arcs that people disliked or thought were boring need that extra re-read (especially Long Ring Long Land) to see just how good each arc is crafted uniquely

Moria, for me, is one of the characters I can never hate, and if he dies, or got killed ofscreen by BB, even if I think it was an explanation as to how Moria gets to know whats happening in Wano, I will have a month long break from one piece...can't not be sad about his death if he dies

Moria is by far my favorite characters in one piece and it's because his backstory was relatable he had a crew he liked alot and had them all killed before his eyes and he was so distraught afterwords that it warped his state of mind permanently.

I dont think Moria wants to "simply" lead his crew of the undead. Rather he leads his crew of undead pirates because he cant endure losing a crewmate again, the way he did against Kaido. As a matter of fact he went after the Blackbeard Pirates to save Absolom.

Great video fr tho. Never really looked to deep into Moria’s character but always knew he had something deep going on. Loved when he confronted BB on his island in search for his missing crew mate, really brings out the ptsd of losing his crew that he spoke of. Man was truly hurting

Great video. Really enjoyed this analysis especially with regards to the newest chapter he's been in, which IMO does evidence that he cares to a degree about his current living (or dead in the case of Absalom lol) crew. I think a lot of the reason why he's disregarded and not looked into further is because of his appearance. Which I understand to a degree, but I personally enjoy his design. It's fun! Late comment but thanks for making this video. Moria really is underrated, largely because of his weird design and lazy personality I think. But I really appreciate him and what he represents in the story. I wonder what he's going to do now he's just lost Absalom. It's clear based on how he interacted with him and Perona that he couldn't close off his heart completely despite his past losses. It must be triggering as hell for him.

Fiji, loved the video (just like the first time you did it - #quality_is_in_the_content) *Suggestion:* You should do a Villain Analysis series (if you wish to of course). Starting with One Piece. You already have Moriah out of the way, & could churn out a ton of good content analyzing other villains & their significance to the story & Luffy's journey. This could maybe allow people to understand how & why other characters fit the narrative they were made for even if they may not be the *best/ most favored* villain (looking at you Hordy & Foxxy) as not many people appreciate that they are different antagonists for different arc necessities/ core messages

Also, showing Moriah's crew being killed in the story (drawing in panel) doesn't really add anything new to the character or make him better in any way, it's just a cool addition we'd have liked to see because we love gore (and we always blame Oda for not showing gore under 'criticism' that it ruins the story which is incorrect)

Honestly, at this point in the story, I can see Gecko Moria forming a temporary alliance with the Straw Hats, especially since Perona is good friends with Zoro and Luffy took down Kaido, the man responsible for the suffering Moria went through. Plus they would have a common enemy in Blackbeard, as he's responsible for the deaths of both Ace and Absalom.

I feel as though his attack on Hachinosu was a good moment for his character although insanely idiotic. On one hand he fearlessly charged into the territory of a Yonko undermanned for the sake of his crew mate. He knows first hand how vicious Yonko can be so to go there demanding an audience with Teach is enough to garner my respect. However I view Moria as an exact opposite to Buggy. Buggy ascends throughout the story almost everytime we see him. He gains crew members, has boost in his reputation, to his eventual shichibukai referral. While we were introduced to Moria as a Shichibukai and in proceeding arcs he loses, crew members and his reputation is squandered to the point where he isn’t respected as a pirate or as an asset to the WG
