Unlike certain podcasts, one particularily irksome one comes to mind, where the main idea conveyed is mostly about number of swear words spoken. I won't mention any names. @@jamesignatowichpickleball

This is one of your best shows! I much prefer your podcasts when you are solo or have a guest. After all, I tune in to the James Ignatowich show to listen to James Ignatowich, not Adam Stone.

You have a gift. While I do watch a lot of pro pickleball, I do not actually play, so you'd think I wouldn't care about solo "tips" podcasts like this. However, I think you make it very interesting and even entertaining. If I ever tried to do something like this, on any subject, it would be a disaster. I wish you good luck in 2024. The pro scene is kind of a mess right now, so I hope you and all of the other top players will continue to play PPA tournaments. I thoroughly enjoyed the increased talent and high-level competition in 2023.

Spot on with serve comment - difficult serves that are deep, dip high or kick up, changing location (backhand/forehand of returner) will garner potentially some free points and/or produce more 2nd shot returns that aren't ideal for the returning team. A non-threatening server is such a relief to go up against ... moves my returner advantage to practically 100%

Very insightful, great show! I haven’t heard Jimmy talk in a while, but you can really tell his progression from the level of in-game understanding, in the moment. I appreciate him, laying it out like this and willingness to share. (don’t want to be helping JW‘s game too much)

Serve analysis was awesome. What about the return? Seeing a lot more flat hard returns. Still a place for slice returns in the game today?
@jamesignatowichpickleball
@jamesignatowichpickleball Жыл бұрын
I don’t think the slice return is as effective as it once was. Now that more players are able to hit aggressive top spin drives, a slice is a more dangerous shot to hit. Remember, your slice is your opponents top spin.

Hey buddy. First time!!!!! ZANE NAV said once that the only shot we should be missing is the serve long....because if we are not pushing or playing the line, we're not taking enough risk..... basically saying like you said...that we shouldn't be hitting 10 out of 10. We need to strive to push ourselves. Great talk!!!! No risk, no reward

Great podcast. I just started playing pickleball. So if I’m wrong about this take this with a grain of salt. I played tennis for a long time as well prior to pickleball. I can really crack an overhead. As stated it’s so instinctual for tennis players. I still keep a loose wrist in pickleball on the overhead so it makes for an easy snap of the wrist. It allows me to get a bit more pace pretty effortlessly without straining the arm and brings the ball back down into the court. So I wasn’t saying this to add instruction but more asking if that’s a good way to do it

When Jimmy is alone he just talks pickleball strategy, which is going to have a larger audience. However the real PPA/MLP fans enjoy hearing the tea. In both cases he seems so genuine and honest (and acts like he's clueless lol)

Great stuff James! Love the ball throwing metaphor and drill for hitting better overheads. And it makes sense too that in general being loose and hitting a ball with more speed will translate to a harder shot. I had to refresh my memory with a Google search, but kinetic energy = 1/2mv^2, which means that speed is way more important in transferring energy to the ball. Also, if I have a question for you for a future pod, what's the best way to send it to you?!

Good tips BPJ! What do you think about hard serves with side spin? I was thinking of using for singles, maybe doubles.
@jamesignatowichpickleball
@jamesignatowichpickleball Жыл бұрын
I think that would be more effective in singles than in doubles. But if you can execute it well, why not use it in doubles. Mixing things up can cause your opponent to make uncharacteristic errors

If you’re jumping to hit a counter, it’s probably pretty low. The lowest and highest counters are easy to hit, but the middle ones seem more awkward. squatting really low will turn a mid-height counter into a higher counter that is easier to smack downwards
@jamesignatowichpickleball
@jamesignatowichpickleball Жыл бұрын
I think this is mostly subjective because of the variety of grips that players use. I feel best countering attacks at middle height right around my lower chest actually.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm just going to say it -- it's remotely possible that leaving the gossip and drama for other podcasts is a viable option. Your talk on the 4th shot alone was better than 99% of all pickleball pods. Maybe also mention how you train to improve your 4th if you have developed something?
