The Lancia Fulcia Coupe is the last real Lancia, it is a little jewel of a classic car and the last real Lancia before Fiat took over and made the cars cheap. It is from the era when Lancia cars were over engineered. But as classic cars they are still very affordable.. a car that once cost more than an E-Type can now be bought for a tenth of the price. @@studiocalder818 Have had both 1300 Alfa and 1.3 Fulvia, I prefer the Alfa motor for drivability and ease of maintenance. No-one other than Lancia really thought the narrow V4 was the answer to a question anyone was asking....Saab considered it to update its 96 but when cost was factored in chose the Ford V4 instead.

In 1985 I used to own a Lancia Fulvia rallye 1,6HF from 1970. It was a “fanalone” model. It was amazing, if I still had it, it would be worth a lot of money...never mind it was a privilege to own it for couple of years ! Life goes on.

30 years ago I helped a friend of mine strip his Fulvia in order to restore it when I lived in Northern Ireland - we both worked for Short Brothers as aircraft tooling engineers. I moved to England to do a post graduate course at Loughborough and then stayed over here and I don't know if he got it finished. I remember the wonderful engineering and the complexity of the body structure. The (rear) c-pillars can be that thin due to the amount of ribbing below the window line to give them extra stiffness and the engine and gearbox subframe was a masterpiece of design - you can remove the entire engine/gearbox/subframe assembly by unbolting it and lifting the front of the body. I'm not sure about the radiator but even the gear lever can stay attached to this assembly. At the time, he also had a Fiat Strada Abarth and I had a Lancia 2000ie (Beta) Coupe. We were mad! 😂🤣

@@martinclapton2724 mine was great - but hard to maintain. Very sharp handling - very adjustable for fwd, good brakes and a grunty and charismatic engine. The gear change was very nice too - long throw but very mechanical feel. Interior was fragile and rusted, though.

The handling on Fulvias is brilliant. On twisty country roads they are incredibly rewarding and swift. You forgot to stay that they are effectively a twin OHC cross-flow engine with twin two choke carburettors, an aluminium head and crankcase and a small light cast iron block. They are particularly respected by engineers who are keen drivers. Glad to see that you appreciate the qualities.

Oh how I miss mine, with that distinctive exhaust rasp 1600HF series 2, alloy bonnet, boot & doors. More grunt than the 1.3 with twin webers, about 130 bhp. Raced it sprinted and hillclimbed it, never let me down, 5 speed dog leg gearbox great for competition. Best on a damp track with cut slicks!

A second episode is needed... Firstly, it is difficult to ignore Lancia's rally heritage with the Fulvia (its major competition success after essentially equipping Ferrari with F1 cars in the mid 50s). Secondly, if the Fulvia won the 1972 Monte Carlo (just go and look at the competition from Porsche, Alpine, Ford...) it was down to the very clever engineering. Lastly, the styling and contrasting finishes are marvellous.

I had a Fulvia in the UK a few years ago and it was so much fun! It was not fast but it always felt and handled like a proper little rally car. Quite ferocious but I always felt safe. Lancia re-created a project version, about 10 years ago which was beautiful but it never reached production.

As a kid, my dad had a 1.3 series 1. I remember it being the first car I did 100MPH in (I was about 6). Beautiful. Still want one. My uncle had a 1.6 hf and he drove like a maniac. That was an experience. It was replaced by an integrale. True classic cars.

I have a RHD Fulvia series 2 from 1972. I echo a lot of what you say. It is the car that just keeps rewarding you the more you drive it - it is a terrific car on so many levels. In short buy one….now!

I loved the Fulvia, still do. I have owned a ‘69 S1 175O GTV and as well a ‘69 Fiat AC 124 Sport (still own this some 42 yrs later), but alas I have never owned a Fulvia..I did drive one some years ago and yes it’s a jewel. In my view all 3 of these are the natural competitor to each other. Like the Fulvia, the original 124 Sport is a delight to drive, precise, nicely made with lovely details and a superb twincam engine. It too is pretty in the same way to the Fulvia. For me, the 1750 GTV though has the most engaging driving feel though and the sweetest gearbox. I am 6.1 and never had any issues with the driving position, unlike perhaps other drivers.

I was so jealous of my fellow airman in Riccone Italy who had one of these. It was a dark maroon if I remember correctly and so beautiful. We were young and loved all the cars on the local market. Your honest enthusiasm is all I need to see, you are wedded to this lovely car, make it yours! - I owned a 1969 Alfa Duetto Spider, a 1978 Alfa Sprint Veloce, a 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider and and finally a 1970 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super 1.6 Lusso. Which did I love the most, the LATTER. It was ugly, but like the Lancia she was a true angel, I wish I still had it. Super fast, quiet, luxurious and just a dream to drive.

Great video - you really captured the essence of these cars. I’ve owned two over the years, both in the 1980s, long after they were new, but even so I used them as an everyday car. The first was a series 1: even higher quality than the later cars. Absolutely gorgeous thing to drive; it felt like it was hewn from a solid block, yet delicate jewel- and watch-like mechanicals. Way higher quality than just about anything else on the road. Despite the small engine, it really moved, especially as it handled so well. The gearbox was a delight to use: only issue was it was 4-speed, with larger than ideal gaps in the ratios (mind you, revving the engine to compensate was never really a problem). Later, I had a Series 2 Zagato 1600, which was similar, but with weird looks (which I loved), more powerful, giving a different character, yet it had definitely lost some of the Lancia-era quality. A very rare car too, especially in RHD, there’s an excellent series of videos on Harry’s Garage on the restoration of identical one to mine. Safe to say his one is shaping up to be in a different league to the condition of mine when I had it. A tough choice between the two, but I think if I could have one back I’d go for the Series 1, even with the smaller less-powerful engine. It was just a more pleasurable drive. Anyway, thanks again for the video.

Had a Fulvia in the 80s. Famously clocked 4 hours Milan to Rome toll to toll on one occasion. True the weather was perfect and there was no traffic on that Sunday. Great memories!

A neighbor had one in the apartment block I grew up in, which was in London’s Holland park. This was up to 1973, before I relocated to what was then Berkshire. The apartment block in question was quite fancy and there were all kinds of beautiful cars of the time parked outside (Jensen, Lamborghinis, E-Types galore, even a bubble car although I am not sure now which one- my father was in a Mark 10 Jag). The neighbor in question was an elderly lady, well she seemed elderly to me, who lived with a ‘female companion’ and I think did illustrations for children’s books. There must have been quite a bit of private wealth there too because they lived very well. They were respectable and charming, and I would spend time visiting with them. I now realize they were in fact discreetly living as an all female couple in the way people did in those days, but had no idea at the time. I think they liked children and had none of their own. Lovely ladies. But OMG that car! I always knew it had something about it. Lucy only ever drove it once a week to get to her weekend cottage at Box Hill in Surrey, and I think looking back that car was where her true alter ego would come out. The perfect cover for a respectable, English, maturing illustrator of children’s books who beneath it all was in fact a full blown, multi culti, metrosexual ‘it’ girl of her time. Just the right mix of modesty, class and exotic. No coincidence that the car I most miss of all the cars I have been through over the years was my 1980s Lancia HPE 2000ie. Not as classy, and Fiat, but oh my, it oozed a certain kind of class and what a joy to drive!

I've discovered your channel and subscribed relatively recently. I love your enthusiasm - it shines. I went back to your earliest uploads and see that your production standard have seriously progressed. My own car is not likely to feature but it's amazed me for something I felt might be troublesome - 96k kilometres when I bought it three and a half years ago has increased to 165k and it's given me no trouble at all. I can stow my guitar in the boot, pull the curtain to allow the hardtop to fold in and most of my miles are top down. €900 well spent. I always thought the Fulvia a very classy looking car. If you can do it, buy one and enjoy it.

Great video on a great car. As a long term owner of a S1 HF I can only agree with everything you said. Only one thing always comes back when a Fulvia is discussed and that is that is was more valueable when new than an E-type. I’m from Holland so I do not know about the UK taxing system but in Holland the E-type was twice the price of a fulvia. Both imports. Looking fwd to the Europa Video. My other classic car! Correct, William. It was about the Fulvia being an import and the E-type being a UK product. I think it would only have applied in the mid 60s. But the Fulvia 1.3 coupé was a hard sell, being more expensive than a Lotus Elan in the late 60s . I´d take the Elan then and now!.

I can see why you like those Jack. Super thin pillars, clever engineering and a delightful interior. Those sort of cars always felt like they wanted to rev and seemed quicker than they actually were. I haven’t driven a Fulvia but have driven an Alfa Sud, a 2 litre GTV and a Lancia Beta Spyder years ago. I particularly liked the Lancia. There can’t be too many of any of these left rust being the primary enemy.

Over the course of the video it sounds like you answered your own question. My vote would be to go for it. Always loved these when Lancia Fulvias were a serious rallying cars with a list of drivers that would class as a who's who of the mid sixties and early seventies. As you said the Minis set the trend for front wheel drive rallying success and Lancia were never far behind and went on to greater things as we know. Saw them several times on the RAC of the time. Fond memories. BTW I love the trips up and down the Fosse, so lovely to see that it is still pretty quiet.. I used to do 30 odd miles on it every morning and evening. Just had one set of traffic lights for a narrow bridge.🚦

They are everything you say. Truly special, as only Lancia built them. Gianni Angnelli had a Lancia made with a Ferrari V12 in it. When Fiat merged Lancia and Alfa Romeo I thought some magic might come of it, but sadly Fiat has destroyed every car under its control. Thanks again for another wonderful video.

Look at Harry's Garage for an example of what a full restoration can entail...when done properly. I've long admired these-they are rare and therefore $$$ in the USA for a good one. As tempting as they are, I'm sticking with a long term keeper grouping of 3 Alfa 105s. Its frankly easier to collect and hoard parts and secondly, parts availability for the 105s are just easier---but still not easy. Nice car there Jack-seems like a fun day spent filming

In a perfect world I'd have a 105 or 115 Alfa GTV. But the world isn't perfect and I'll be sticking with my '16 Mazda MX-5, which is pretty close to perfect. Now a GTV with full MX-5 running gear would be a very good car.

You are right to stay with the 105, Steve. The Alfa is a lot easier to live with. I´ve had both. Little things cost a lot to fix on a Fulvia, and it´s usually because of the "wonderful" engineering which is too often just a complex answer to a simple problem.

I never had the pleasure of a Fulvia. I did have a Beta Montecarlo and an HPE, they were wonderful cars. Unfortunately for me, it is much more rare Fulvia Zagato Coupe that I lust over.

I'd fantasized about owning a Fulvia Coupe since I was 12 (1966) and finally bought one in 2021. In the past two years it has been gone though rather thoroughly and is now at "daily driver capable" level of completion and reliability. It fulfills all of my fantasies of what it would be like and then some ... It was the first car I ever fell in love with, and will likely be the last car I ever go out of my way to own with such driven intensity. Marvelous machines with such an incredible, rich history behind them, and so delightful to drive. :D

The Fulvia is a beautiful car that I'd buy if I had the garage space and budget to acquire all my dream cars. The Fulvia experience is why I'll never part with my owned-since-new 2005 MINI R50 (the non-supercharged variant). FWD, light, not a lot of horsepower but handles like it's on rails, FEELS fast as heck, is simple to maintain, and puts a smile on your face every time you drive it. If you have a car that does that for you, no matter the age or make, HANG ON TO IT!

They were great little cars. Even more underrated were the Lancia Flavias. In the late 60's to mid 70's, my mother has a second series sedan and I had a Pf coupé. They were both great driving cars, well suited to NSW roads of the period.

Agreed! I swapped my '72 Fulvia S2 for a '70 Flavia 2000 Coupe, so I could fit my kids in. To my surprise I've found the Flavia even more rewarding to drive - turn in is so delicate and precise for a decent sized car. On both cars, ensuring the bushes aren't worn will keep the car agile and precise. I just miss the wonderful burble of the Fulvia's V4...

Lovely car. I had a 1.3 series 3 and an Alfa 105. The Fulvia was always a nicer drive. The engine is a wonderful compact design: V4 with a single block and head. VW later nicked that idea for their V5, V6 and W16. The 1.3 litre made around 87 bhp which is quite difficult to improve on when tuning them, so, Lancia did a good job.I think if I ever bought a classic car again it would be a Fulvia and maybe even the 4 door Berlina!

i have a 74 fulvia 3 since 2000, my car was restored and respray, it had no rusty on the body and the engine repared to original standards, and is a pleasure to drive it, very nimble, light, comunicative steering, 5 speed, discs allround, a litlle jowel with so much to give... and the creamy v4 engine is so alive... i love my little fulvia, give me much pleasure than my 71 xj6 4.2 manual jag...

My father had 2 of the zagato models followed by the 1.6 HF Lusso, on which the cornering was amazing, it would go around traffic islands at speeds over 60 mph. I had a series 2 in 1980 which suffered from rust unfortunately, but they were way ahead of anything at the time and very fast to drive for the period, nothing else could touch them. The HF Lusso was something else, if you could try to find one to test you would be amazed. Great review thanks for doing it.

When I was a 17, around 1990, a chef at Gleneagles hotel had a lovely Fulvia coupe, even back then one of the nicest things to see on the road.

I live in Santa Barbara, California and I see Fulvia’s quite often in this area. Rust isn’t a problem here, but I’d imagine parts availability and finding a mechanic who understands them would be no easy task. I drive a 1977 Datsun 280 Z and a 2019 Mazda MX-5, both are excellent cars, especially on the long winding canyon roads we have in abundance here, but revving out a Fulvia would be lots of fun.

Did you convert the 280 to carbs or still running the stock FI? I heard they didn't work that well.

Fulvias are just brilliant...I have a Fiat Sport Coupe which is its direct competitor, but I love the Fulvias! Just brilliant.

I see you have the Mk 1 version - such a pretty car too! The father of a friend of mine has a Mk 2. Very pretty too though I prefer your front end. And another great engine - one I was fairly familiar with in my Lancia 2000ie back in the day.

@@Stevieboy130664 Yes I have 2 Coupes - the AC (MK1) and the CC (MK3) which I took the 1.8 engine and put in my first gen. The Fiat Coupes are greatly undervalued which is good for first time classic car buyers and they are very good competitors to the Fulvias and Giulias. The Lancia 2000 is a beauty there is a blue one on the market right now for 10 pounds, I am very tempted...

The first 'peace' was obviously a mistake. But I get all high and fuzzy when I see any little Italian sedan with brio like this one. I bought a '77 Fiat 131 2 door with the twin cam four and 5 speed brand new. Also new was my '81 Brava 2 liter fuel injected and electronic ignition and 5 speed. Both cars were dark blue with tan interiors. I did a lot of enjoyable miles in both of these fun little cars that seemed to be stuck to the road and very forgiving. Loved both.

Back in about 1973 I was working in Toronto and had a chance to buy a a 1968 Fulvia Series 1 for about $400. Yeah, those were the days. I took it out for a test drive and to this day it was one of the most exciting and nimble cars I've ever driven. I thought it was a 1600 cc engine but you say that came later, although I don't know if the ones exports to Canada and the USA had the bigger engine from the start. I can still remember coming round a clover leaf off the 401 at 80 mph, cornering dead flat and with three of us in it. It sure didn't seem slow to me at the time! Nah, I didn't buy it...Italian cars were looked at as pretty exotic and unreliable in those days...but it sure was a blast and I have to confirm everything you've said in your review.

Thanks for posting this overview of the wonderful little Lancia Fulvia. A brilliant little car and best was the series 1, of course. I had a series 2, and loved every minute. Prices have now tripled to when I had mine but they’re still a good buy. But, at the end of the day, I’d have to go with my old GT Junior as the more overall rewarding driver and ownership proposition.

A friend sent one to my house to store it for a car show (Concours Italiano!). I'm an Alfa guy, but this car really impressed me. Such a pleasure to drive, and his even had EFI. How many cars had EFI in the early 70's?

Had a series 1 Fulvia Coupe back in the 90's, great little car, engineering on them was just amazing, probably the nicest driving classic I had, and probably the car I most regret selling. i would definitely say get one.

Always loved those. I remember, in the late 80's there was a pretty dark blue series 2 example at a used car dealer across from the house I lived in. I came very close to buying it "for my wife" but we ended up getting a probably more reliable Polo GT for her. That Lancia was 7000DM at the time. Not cheap but awesome.
