I love when abusive parents quote the “honor thy parents” and leave out the rest of it which is about parents not bringing their child to anger. That phrase is literally just saying “hey kids respect your parents, and parents don’t give you kids a reason to not respect you”
@ATTACKofthe6STRINGS9 күн бұрын
Ex Christian. The other half of that also never gets properly emphasized in that way. It’s never taught as “kids, respect your parents; parents, don’t give kids reasons not to respect you.” It’s taught as “kids, respect your parents always, because that is the god-ordained order of the family. We are to respect our parents, elders, and authorities, and turn the other cheek, as Christ submitted himself to God, and the Roman authorities…” etc etc etc. On the parents’ side of things, you’re literally lucky if you get little more than “consider not pissing off your kids.”

Semi-religious, trans queer Jew, here. I have like 7 translations and commentaries on the Torah (first five books) and I read the whole thing at least once. I even read the Christian books (then I rolled a spliff with a page. I was an angy, atheist girl for a minute) Where are you getting that? It says “honour your father and mother, so that you may have long life on the earth.” Then it just moves on to murder, adultery and perjury. Arguably, someone could interpret that as “if you don’t listen to your parents, we’ll shorten your life”. No major religion does, thank Gd. Is this another conspiracy theory, like “the bible doesn’t have homophobia”? The book is very old, and written for shepherds and ish in the Middle East. We’ve got the Hebrew. We’ve always had the Hebrew. People have been writing about the Torah since before Jesus, so we can track how few changes there have ever been. Very traditional translation into Aramaic makes a number of notable changes making things more specific or just small changes from a literal translation. Fun fact: “cross-dressing” wasn’t a problem because gendered clothing even a thing when it was written until we were in Europe. Tunics with fringes. Head coverings. Tradition says Joseph was a femboy. He’s know as “Joseph the Righteous”. I think he’s a righteous dude. It’s gonna have some poopy stuff in it. Here’s the craziest part: even with all the crazy commandments with death penalties and such, the laws were really progressive. “You have to give someone guilty of negligent homicide of a relative the chance to escape to one of three sanctuary cities before you hunt them down and kill them.” Anyway, double and triple check your sources, whenever possible. The bible is in the public domain, so just avoid the NIV et al (so many terrible translations out there) and check a couple. The Robert Alter translation is very academic and only rarely uses traditional interpretation, rather than being literal. Makes note of it, when he does, too. “Masters of birth”* *literally “Like animals.””
@GretchZ5 күн бұрын
My absolute novel of a comment is gone, but no, it doesn’t say that. It says “honour your father and mother so that you may have long life on the earth; don’t kill; don’t…” Must be a new revisionist conspiracy theory. This is pretty shocking, considering some of the heinous ways my mom has treated me over other things in the past. I'm guessing she's finally getting too old to keep picking fights with her adult kids and realizing it doesn't work and just ends up making them not speak to her. You know, funny thing I learnt recently, is that the concept and creation of Santa actually came from the Christian movement. In an aim to move away from Christmas being typically a very drunk (or merry) and lude holiday. Whereas with St Nicholas and Santa, it refocussed the holiday into being family friendly/children orientated. In fact for many years, devout Christians wanted to remove Christmas due to the debauchery (which happened temporarily in England). And this is why history is important folks! Most parents barely remember any of the shit they were taught at school. As I recall, the average American adult has a 6th grade reading age. The overwhelming majority of people have no business even trying to homeschool their kids. Here in the UK, as I understand it, home schooling is legal, but you still have to follow the national curriculum, and this is checked up on. You still end up doing standardised testing at a local school, since for obvious reasons the exams can't be done at home with just the parent for supervision.

18:53 A response to the religious mother: First of all, *you're not right.* Your actions were un-Christian and wrong. "Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." -- 1 Timothy 5:8 "As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions." -- Romans 14:1 Secondly, *you didn't make her.* God did. "Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished." -- Proverbs 16:5 "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves." -- Philippians 2:3 She is her own person, not your possession. You cannot make her apologize to you. She has no obligation to even talk to you, or do anything you say. If you want her to forgive you, you will need to start by treating her with respect, as a person, and then pray that your actions have not already been too much for her to forgive. And if you actually wanted to be a part of her life, then you should not have kicked her out of yours. "Do to others as you would have them do to you." -- Matthew 7:12 "whatever one sows, that will he also reap." -- Galatians 6:7 If you are truly a good Christian, then you should start by reflecting on your own actions. Consider that this situation might actually be God punishing you for acting contrary to His word, and failing in your obligations as a parent.

@jennix866610 күн бұрын
Yep. Saint Nicholas of Myra 15 March 270 - 6 December 343,also known as Nicholas of Bari, was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent from the maritime city of Patara in Anatolia (in modern-day Antalya Province, Turkey) during the time of the Roman Empire. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, toymakers, unmarried people, and students in various cities and countries around Europe. His reputation evolved among the pious, as was common for early Christian saints, and his legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the folklore of Santa Claus ("Saint Nick")

The last story, the "wholesome" one, made me remember of one of my last conversations with my mom. I was supposed to receive a large amount of money I was legally entitled to. My mother convinced me to have it deposited into her bank account and then she would transfer it to my account. I trusted her because why wouldn't I trust my own mother? Well, she stole the money. Months later, she came to me and asked for more money to pay for her credit card that was maxed out (she knew I still had some savings). She had accumulated 10 grand in credit card debt. Obviously, I refused to pay for that. She went nuts but managed to borrow it from some relatives. A couple of months later, she showed up with another 10k bill in credit card expenses the bank was charging her for. She demanded that I used all my savings to pay for that (my savings wouldn't cover even half of that, I had like 3k or 4k), because she was my mother, therefore in her mind, I was responsible for taking care of her insane expenses. There wasn't much of a relationship afterwards.

22:33 I have multiple certificates in food service and I am a food handler it makes me genuinely so upset when parents do this. Because while we haven't proven that raw milk is or isn't healthier than pasteurized. It irks me that they rather listen to a Facebook group than systems that have been in place longer than they've been alive. She's, weather she realizes or not is exposing her baby to so much bacteria that it physically can't handle.
@ookamiblade63189 күн бұрын
Tldl: the benefits of pasteurization outweigh the minor losses as we aren’t drinking milk for the specific vitamins lost. And one vitamin we are drinking it for is increased. We do have the science on this, pasteurization does reduce levels of certain vitamins, but they are ones we do not primarily get from milk in the first place and it raises levels of other vitamins. The end result is you might poo/pee/sweat out less of those vitamins and more of the other ones the effect on nutrition is negligible and the benefit is less sickness and death. We drink milk primarily for the calcium, vitamin D, potassium, zinc, amino acids, and protein all of which are not affected by the process, and vitamin A which is increased by the process. We get our B12, B9, C, and E which are reduced elsewhere. B2 isn’t reduce below the daily intake amount and would otherwise be the one nutrient where there would be a concern if it fell below, it does not. The daily is 1.1mg/day and cows milk has 1.83 mg/liter post pasteurization.
@moocraft82979 күн бұрын
@ookamiblade6318 I want you to tell me how pasteurization actually works for milk and tell me if the process is something cable of get rid of vitamins
@ookamiblade63189 күн бұрын
@ getting rid of them? Entirely? No. Slightly reduce the levels? Yes. Pasteurization for milk is flash heating the milk to a level just enough to kill bacteria and viruses, but not enough to boil. Depending on the method use to heat the entire process takes 1-15 seconds. The lower the heat the longer it takes. And yes, we are still looking into ways to improve the process so that there is no nutrient loss including ways that do not use heat at all. Currently we usually use microwave volumetric heating (2018) as it is the easiest way to maintain an even application of heat that is gentle and short in duration and there is less nutrient loss than what I reported above which was data from 2001. Almost like when a concern is raised scientists go about trying to solve the problem even when the problem is just ‘concerns’. Though trust me when I say if you ever get the chance to culture raw vs pasteurized milk the amount and variety of potentially fatal bacteria that are often antibiotic resistant in raw make this not much of a hard choice. Raw milk is playing Russian roulette with more bullets than empty slots.

You'd be surprised what medical licenses some people can get. I had a nurse tell me that it didn't matter that I'd had a hysterectomy, she needed to know the date of my last period to know if I was pregnant. Not "might be", "was", that's not how pregnancy works. It could be three weeks and you're pregnant, it could be 6 months and you're not. But yeah, based on her logic and the fact I've never given birth, I would've been like 10/11 months pregnant. If you can see the issue with that number you are smarter than she is. I was her last patient at that office. I have no idea if she managed to get another job or if her license was revoked. I do know the look on the nursing supervisors face as he emerged from behind the desk was absolutely priceless. I also had a doctor "inform" me I was pregnant with "pregnancy migraines" (which aren't a thing), but that my tests (yes multiple, he didn't trust the first one) were negative because I "was too early". My 1.5 year old migraine, and blood tests can detect as soon as 6 days. An actual MD told me that twice the length of human pregnancy was too early to test. WTF

TL;DR: Natural medicine is based on folklore and cannot be standardized without isolating active principles. Any medicine that has been proven to work is properly called "medicine." 'Natural medicine" has no control over dosage, is constantly subject to improper identifications (whether by mistake or with spurious intent), and is often unregulated. You ingest random plant parts at your mortal peril, especially where the difference between a benign dose and a murderous one is impossible to determine prior to administration, or based even on your individual immune system. The amount of foxglove, for example, that I can take from what I grow in its naturalized environment, may very well treat my heart conditions, and absolutely kill anyone else. What I consume today might keep me going; what that same bed and the same strain produce in the next year may kill me outright, or have no effect at all. Living things mutate; they mutate in every generation, and self select for various environmental conditions over time. Anyone that pretends that such-and-such a plant or herbal preparation cures or treats or even "aids" or even "may help prevent" is at best lying to you, to steal your money. At worst, they're trying to kill you. Get scammed uf you like, die if you must, but it won't be because you weren't warned.

This is the logical and predictable outcome of people going generations without access to affordable and reliable health care. I'm not sure about all places of course, just that in my state in the US when I was homeschooled for a time, the parent had to present the curriculum they were going to use to get it approved. I don't think it was insanely strict, but you had to prove you were teaching your child core subjects and show what books/methods you were doing. (My mom used a recommended curriculum not one she made up, so it was all good.) I'm not sure how unschooling is legal at all...
@Lari-lc3zq9 күн бұрын
Different states have different requirements. Some are quite strict and require approved curriculums. Others literally have zero regulations at all and only require the parents to sign a form saying they’re doing homeschooling. It’s really effed up.

My sibs were very sickly and couldn't handle the local public school, and the private school was out of financial reach. There were, at the time, accredited, not-for-profit grade-schools-by-mail, some of which were not religious in nature. A few years later, my parents got enough money together to send them to the local private school, where they did far, far better than I did. (I worked to pay for my tuition, and got straight Bs where they got straight As). The standards, even in that state, have degraded SIGNIFICANTLY since we went through. Society simply doesn't care about their young people; and would rather whine about them then guide them.

Let's be honest, there are some people who have no business having a goldfish, let alone a child!
@SpecialBlanket8 күн бұрын
Goldfish live 10 to 15 years and at adult size are 12 to 15 inches long. A single adult goldfish needs 75 gallons or more. They are among the most difficult to care for among "pet store" type fish, they are carp: river/lake fish. They are not suited for most home aquariums. Almost nobody should have a goldfish, only dedicated hobbyists with disposable income. I literally had to remodel a room of my house to house my two goldfish. Respectfully, expressions like this propagate the idea that goldfish are easy pets which leads to tons of unnecessary fish suffering and unintentional animal cruelty. I am not shaming you because obviously you did not know before, I just ask that now that you know, you spread this information. I love my goldfish so much and it makes me so sad to think about all the goldfish hurting out there.

24:21 Santa was a CHRISTIAN SAINT, St. Nicholas to be exact.
@onlyfoes10 күн бұрын
The American Santa Claus has little to nothing to do with the actual Saint to be correct.
@valerielevasseur867410 күн бұрын
@onlyfoes The Western (not just American!) depiction does share significant elements with the saint of legend, such as dropping gifts (coins) down a chimney that land in some type of foot covering. That said, the type of Christian who angsts over this is usually not just non- but anti-Catholic and thinks we "worship" the saints. So the silliness of it all would be lost on them anyway.

@McBehrer We pray WITH the saints. So yes, that's different from worship. Do you worship the people with whom you pray? As this is hardly the venue for catechism, I encourage you to, you know, Google this. Just so everybody knows, parking at Disneyland is $40 for the first hour, $10 for each hour afterwards, for a maximum of $80 per day. And that's self-parking. Valet parking starts at $70. And there is no on-street parking on Katella Avenue or Harbor Boulevard for well over a mile. So, unless her parents took an Uber or Lyft, or parked across the street at the convention center, that was a very expensive stalking episode.

I can't imagine what the overdraft charges would have been like in that last story if mom had started paying money back a month later. Those things are charged daily, which is fun when you only find out you screwed up and overdrafted three days after it happened, because your bank sent you a letter. I no longer have overdraft "protection" on my account.

Parental stalking? I moved to the opposite corner of the US from my parents when I was 18. I lived in multiple cities in different states. My father had friends in each of those cities, who I didn’t know. He told his friends where I worked & hung out, & asked them to “check up on me”. That might not have been so creepy, if he’d asked them to introduce themselves, but they didn’t. They would come to cafes where I worked, as customers, & not say anything to me, but then report back to my dad. My father thought it was somehow no big deal & a quirky or sneaky “sweet” thing to do, to bring up things about my life that he couldn’t know about. When u asked how he knew those details, he’d say “Oh, so & so told me. They saw you the other day!” As if it was normal to ask people to SPY ON your grown child from across the country, instead of having them introduce themselves & say “I’m friends with your dad & he said you work here & he asked me to come by & check on you.” That would’ve been mildly creepy, but my dad still doesn’t understand that it WASN’T FUNNY that he had multiple friends spying on me in every city! This was 20+ yrs ago & I still don’t know which customers were spies, & which weren’t! Still makes my hair stand on end.

Where does it sy anything about “provoking a child’s rage”? I’ve read the Bible. I e read big chunks many times. Multiple translations. Can parse a fair bit of the original Hebrew. There’s nothing like that in the Ten Commandments, and can’t remember it anywhere else. Is it some Jesus thing?

That 'conversation' with the woman and her stalker parent, the parent refuses to elaborate over text and demands an in- person conversation because with text there's now a 'written' record of their BS, actual evidence. A conversation can later be denied or manipulated. Text can't be. Always insist on text communication, or if doing voice calls, record the calls.

Went minimal contact for years. Starting to have contact again but with boundaries because well...i have no support system other than my fiancee and no friends. I need someone in my life. Don't think I'll ever get an apology or even "oh yeah i remember i did that" because her game is "deny deny deny".

My husband and I eloped. My mom planned a dinner for us that night. My husband and I picked the restaurant and we picked the menu together. since it was 15 people we needed to order ahead of time. We were included in everything. My MIL decided to throw us a lunch 2 days later with my husband's family. The food was not kosher, there was one vegetarian option, my husband and I weren't even told about it let alone included in the planning. They served food I was allergic too, they served fish and the smell even makes me sick. I was sick, couldn't eat anything and no one even bothered to introduce me and I didn't know most of his distant relatives.... yea. This was 15 years ago and yes, we are currently NC with them as that was just the beginning.
