I think the real reason Aston Martin has slipped so much into being a midfield team is that there was probably a quarrel inside the team that pushed to focus the car more on Lance driving style than Alonso. Last year when AM found the performance with Alonso taking several podiums, Lance was in a bad place and receiving a lot of backslash for underperforming. This season Alonso has repeated multiple times how difficult it is to drive the AM24, while it seems that Lance is "thriving" a little bit more, we also saw him "proud" in some interviews about how he is much closer to Fernando's performance, and we had have the episode of the team orders recently. Maybe there are issues in the team that are not seing the light of the day...

As a Hamilton fan, I don't like Alonso, but it's wrong that he only has two championships and how his career has played out, given his talent level. In terms of talent, I think he's top 5 of all time. I also agree with the idea that his motivation has been a factor. It's no coincidence that when championship-caliber drivers have midfield cars, they are closer to their teammates than when they have more competitive cars.

Just talent is not enough to be one of the best drivers ever. I personally doubt it is a coincidence that Alonso has just two championships. Hamilton has 7, as many as Schumacher, Max has 3 already, Vettel has 4, again as many as Prost etc. Maybe not all of them, but at least some of them stayed in a team for years and made this happen. Others also made right choices. Alonso at best can be claimed he did this with Renault. Yes, he has a lot of talent and longevity but why would he get a pass because he failed where others thrived? His threat of leaking spygate if McLaren didn't reinstate him as the #1 driver in 2007 ultimately led to the discovery of it and a hefty fine Mercedes had to pay, his lambasting of Ferrari burned bridges with them and he severed all ties with Honda (and therefore teams using their engines) over his excessively frequent 'GP2 engine' outbursts. He's almost as good at ruining relationships as he is at racing, so he had his own part to play in his career not being as fruitful as it should have been based on his undeniable talent.

I always believed one of the worst things that could happen to him was to be a champion too early. I remember him saying something like "this is the goal of my whole career and i already did it at 24". So this gave him the comfort to waste years waiting for seats to open up. When he returned to Renault in 2008, he knew he wasn't going to win anything there, yet he wasted 2 years of his career as an also-ran while Santander bought Raikkonen's contract to make way for him in 2010. He went there expecting to race for the same team that beat him in 2007, but that team didn't exist anymore in 2010, it would require a lot of work and luck to beat the now top team Red Bull, which offered him a seat for 2008 but he was eyeing Ferrari already and didn't take it. After the Ferrari years, he could very well go home, he only didn't yet because he loves motor racing way too much. Good for us who can enjoy him a little longer.

Can you imagine a championship fight between Alonso, Hamilton and Verstappen??? It would be golden. I also think that we are at a point where age doesn’t matter as much. They are now getting the best care and health to extend their career now you add their experience, the younger drivers will have a hard time keeping up.
@rspbgaming81473 ай бұрын
Short answer, No. Not because Alonso doesn't still have the talent but because I seriously doubt Aston will build a good enough car.

This story has been going on for nearly 20 years. He's not wasted. Good drivers make good decisions and don't burn bridges. There's a reason he's only been able to drive midfield cars for the last decade. Children born during his last championship graduated high school this year. He's a left over from two decades ago. At the end of the day, there's a reason why he's been irrelevant for a dozen years and counting. It would be hilarious to see him go to RBR though. Just when they're slipping backwards due to losing their MVPs. It would almost be perfect. And yes, he'd completely blow them up as Verstappen's teammate. He's been well behaved at AM because Stroll isn't really a rival, and he's daddy's boy so Alonso has to. He hasn't changed though.

His moves, like to Renault or McLaren, were considered fairly logical when he made them, if not obvious choices. Nobody would expect Mercedes to suddenly have an absurd engine and McLaren to completely fall off after being championship contenders for a couple decades straight. Lewis made an educated move, but so did Alonso. Sometimes there's zero real way to assume certain things will happen, like the entire team structure changing at Ferrari while he was there due to corporate. He can't predict or control the regs, neither can Lewis, neither can Seb. If it was as easy as just "making the right decision", everyone would do it lmao. Alonso made the right decisions for the times and places he was placed. He was never going to be allowed to win with McLaren in 2007, that much was clear. So he had to move where there was openings and recent potential - and he did. With Alpine it was clear they had incredible structural issues and he wasn't getting a good contract. Aston was a brilliant move for the time, but they then seemingly kneecapped themselves to cater to stroll. It's not that Lewis, Seb, Max, or others made better moves - it's that he didn't HAVE to move much (or at all) You can critique Alonso's moves because he didn't have the opportunity to just occupy the best seat for 8-10 years straight. Like, are we gonna say Schumacher made amazing career moves by... choosing not to leave Ferrari during their championship streak? Alonso largely made the right moves - at the wrong times. OR, simply didn't have better options. Again, when you aren't in the top seat, you don't have the LUXURY of making a perfect decision. Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, all value continuity. They've ALL had static lead drivers since ~2018/19, and before that had other lead drivers. There was no room for him. With Lewis's position, he could keep winning races and wait for a perfect deal. Alonso doesn't have that time on him age wise, nor does he have a good seat to sit in on the bargaining table. (Also, consider that Lewis wasn't always on the table for 2007 McLaren. We could very well have a 5-7 time champion Alonso if his move to McLaren wasn't timed with Lewis jumping up and being favored by the team. That was objectively an amazing move without future context, and would have put him on a 4+ championship winning streak.) I'd say past ~2012, the chance of him being in a top team again was near zero. RB Had Vettel, then Danny, now Max. McLaren had Hamilton, and then lost him and fell to the very bottom while grabbing Alonso, hoping he could replace Lewis - while not fixing their car. Now they have Norris/Piastri, and would likely never let either go in exchange for a year or two with alonso even if he won championships both years - the idea of those drivers in the future is huge. Ferrari had Vettel after Alonso left, and then Leclerc, now Ollie. You can be one of the best drivers on the field and still not justify a seat at one of those teams - because you aren't in their planner. These teams are planning drivers years out whenever possible, and Alonso, even with his speed still clearly being there, is a question mark of longevity. No top team wants to sign a multi-year deal with him when they could sign a worse younger driver that will be with the team as long as they want them.

Alonso was always one of the best drivers. Even he was the problem itself that could not win more. After Renault he basically left every team after frustration of not having winning car and after he left. That team often had the winning car. And when he had chance to win once. He just melted at the end. But at the same time he is amazing driver but it was mostly his own fault that he was wasted.

This season has been dissapointing because, unlike Lewis, Alonso has driven underwhelming cars for the majority of his career, and has had a midfield car or worse much often. In fact I don't think Hamilton has ever trully had a midfield car. So the only excuse for him could be lack of motivation because of age. Because it's not nearly the first time he has been in this situation
