The Mountain House MCW Ration

Mountain House MCWs aren't normally available to the public, but thanks to a production overrun, Kstore was able to snag a bunch. How does the MCW ration compare to MREs? And how is it different from the commercial Mountain House meals? I ate some in the woods to find out.

These things were the shit when we were training in Bridgeport. Now that I’m a free man I still use them when I go backpacking, whenever I can get them.

I take the mountain house pouches on multi day trips, I really like them though I always end up with some food in the pouch that manages to avoid rehydrating. I cannot be bothered doing actual cooking out in the wild.

Agreed. I'd rather cook at home. It's fun to watch those bushcraft channels that make steaks and shit and haul cast iron into the woods, but I'm not interested in doing it. After filling the pouch, you can either stir it or you can knead or softly shake the pouch. Then stir again at the end. Or just enjoy the delicious salty pockets of dry flavor powder. :)

It doesn't help that my property is less than a mile from a swamp..and that basically alaskan men's cologne smells like bug spray to the people who come here from anywhere else. I took the commercial Mountain House meals on the Appalachian Trail. Lawdy were they awesome. I don't know if I would appreciate them as a meal at home, but let me tell you, they were magical when everyone else was eating cold oatmeal and powdered eggs.

Chili Mac is the bomb. My former marine staff sergeant dad used to make it for us. Not tried the freeze dried, but MRE version is good.

Yep! I have some non-Mountain House meals that definitely do say "best by" and are out of date by a few years. Tried eating one and it was pretty gross... I think it had dried milk in it. Mountain House lasts the longest.

MREs are perfect for large groups with a logistics line available. You can truck them in, truck out the trash and not have to worry about having more than just drinking water on hand. AKA the Military. They work well for a few days in a non permissive environment where you're on the go and really don't have time to fuck around with a stove and finding water all the time. Any longer than that and freeze dried is my go-to choice.

Two comments: I agree wholeheartedly about the turkey tetrazzini. It's wonderful. I also have a can of turkey tetrazzini I got from my brother, who got it several No 10 cans from the free bin at the local church thrift store. They couldn't sell food products under their license, but it made for a hella good score to get several cans of 20+ year to go Mtn Home stuff for nada.

@Nate Higgers 🏳️‍🌈⃠ Humanitarian Daily Ration, they're mostly vegan and designed to be distributed to civilians of war-torn countries that may have religious or dietary restrictions. Basically just cheap MREs without the flameless heater. They weight much more than a MCW ration and mostly consist of 2 vegan entrees, a cookie, a pastry and some crackers with peanut butter & jelly.

Pro tip: if you live in Cascadia and are legitimately in the mountainous backcountry, water filtration is kind of a waste of time and energy. As long as the source is fast moving and not stagnant, the chances of a parasite are pretty minimal. Especially at altitude where the water is snow/glacier melt off. Unless there is a bear shitting directly into the river or a mountain goat drowned and is rotting upstream there’s not a whole lot of risk. In the lower altitude streams the fish, beavers, or otters are a factor though.

One factor to consider, is the MH meals will certainly slow down your bowel production and make your shits rather solid. On the plus side, easier wiping. On the downside, constipation while hiking is a special kind of miserable.
