Wow Steve! I can't believe you got this ration! Back in 1983, me and a friend and his German Shepherd went camping in the mountains of North Carolina for a week. I was 11 at the time (and my friend was 16) so my mom took to me to the Army/Navy Surplus where she bought some gear and a few cases of MREs for my trip. My friend had picked up a bunch of those Mountain Home meals and naturally we would trade 1 for 1. I distinctly remember the chicken stew and that I enjoyed the meal. Thanks for bringing that memory back! In fact, there's another story that came out of that trip...On the 4th day that German Shepherd chased a critter off into the woods...and that was that...he was gone! 2 weeks later my friend got a call from someone whom had found the dog and called the number on his "dog tag". That dog was found in northern Georgia, well over a hundred miles from our camp site! Again, thank you for the memories!

Hey everyone, this video was supposed to be out Wednesday but some major sound issues almost kept it from being released. Thankfully I managed to get them fixed and so here we go! Huge thank you to Oldsmokey for this interesting ration - I'd never seen a civilian produced LRP before - they were only made between 1970-1988. And are very uncommon by this point. Here is a link to Oldsmokey's channel: kzbin.info Tell him Steve sent ya! He's a fellow MRE reviewer and great friend. Thank you so much everyone, the channel has now reached 400,000 subscribers - I'd never expected to see such amazing reception for military rations. There was a point when first starting where I figured maybe with enough work and good luck, I'd have 10,000 subscribers in the first year - and that was aiming high. So again, thank you all! So I also am releasing a bonus video tonight, a simple yet very interesting Indonesian C1 - so if you have the time, check that one out too. Alright, cool!

This one was very unusual considering half the contents had civilian style packaging that was not layered and designed to last - and ingredients that also should have made for some real spoilage over the years - yet it was oddly preserved.
@jdizzle90117 жыл бұрын
Steve1989MREInfo Maybe it was because it was civilian, that it had more preservatives?
@andrew-sn5vv7 жыл бұрын
I thought military-grade foods have more preservatives because civilian-grade foods aren’t made to last more than 2-3 years. Possibly just impeccable storage conditions; Steve's channel shows if you keep something well-packaged it can last for a very long time regardless of chemicals
@aserta7 жыл бұрын
Some are lucky survivors (you can tell by how some parts of the MRE aren't as good as others, some having gone off completely), some are preserved because of storage conditions (again, some luck involved, but generally they are pretty uniform), and the last, the best, some are deliberately kept in the best kind of conditions that money can buy (and there are guys out there that have them, i don't know what you'd call them, collectors i suppose). Either way, most parts are designed to stay fresh for quite a long time, it's a chemistry of various components mixing in (in their static state) and not reacting badly, as, would a regular piece of food would. I watched, recently, a documentary on the way they make MREs and i have to say, that, as food goes, impartial to the results, i think it's one of the highest branches of the culinary world with the obvious exception of space grade food.

It makes me sad too, the 80s were cack! No internet, no youtube, no video on demand services, games were pixelated and 2D and there was no way of telling if they were crap before you bought the game since magazine reviews were paid for by the games publishers who obviously wanted to sell their games. Not to mention the terrible 80s pop music that all sounded the same because it came from the same studios that used the same synths. As a generation X'er I'm glad things have moved on!

I like Steve's felt map of Okinawa, hanging on the wall. For those who are puzzled, the United States military invaded Okinawa, the main island of the Ryukyu Islands, just 300 miles south of Kyushu, on April 1, 1945. For the Japanese, Okinawa marked the beginning of the invasion of the Japan home islands. For the United States, the Okinawa campaign was the last fought in World War II. It was by far much larger than the Normandy invasion of June 6, 1944. It was also by far the most bloody and costly paid for in American lives, 14,000 men lost in a mere 88 days while the Japanese lost 100,000 men. Still, the butcher's bill was so high that while the U.S. government and its armed forces remained resolute about invading Japan, everyone was terrified of the anticipated casualties. Okinawa persuaded President Truman to approve the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Did the atom bombs convince the Japanese government to surrender? American history books say so, but new opinions have since arisen. It was the Soviet declaration of war and invasion of Manchuria, northern China, and northern Korea that finally brought the Japanese government to despair. The atom bombs put the Japanese in the right direction and the Soviet threat of invading Hokkaido and possibly northern Honshu finally convinced emperor Hirohito and the peace faction of the Japanese cabinet that surrender was better than awaiting the invasion of the Soviets. Initially the Japanese planned to resist ferociously the upcoming American invasion of Kyushu but the thought of Russians occupying Japanese sacred soil finally panicked the top members of the Japanese government, including Hirohito, enough into accepting surrender to the Americans.

This one is really interesting. Civilian rations have come a long way since the 1980s...

This ration was truly fascinating, Tony. Quite the evolution civvy rations have made since then - except I do say MH needs to bring Chicken Stew back.

Steve1989MREInfo Do you have any thoughts as to why MH stopped producing the Chicken Stew? Too expensive maybe or ?

Their beef stew is pretty good.
@hawkeytown7 жыл бұрын
They essentially do make this still, its chicken and dumplings now. The only difference is they use the biscuit bits instead of the "bread" bits that come in the beef stew. Its an improvement. Also biscuits and gravy is GREAT. You just have to get the water ratio right and not add as much as they say.
