I've watched it twice, and keep seeing more to it the more I watch. It's just magic. It's not just about Appalachian music, although the music is essential, haunting, and powerful. Nor is it only a retelling of one family's story. It exists in a time frame, but is really timeless: it's about everything. With the sweet energy that comes from, say, a school play, there is touching earnestness and poignant sincerity throughout. Underlying everything is pure love, and all the joys and sorrows of human life, straight to your heart .

All I could focus on was the terrible acting and wishing it was just a nonfiction music documentary

I also just watched this on Amazon. Purchased it even though it was free, felt it would be a disservice NOT to pay for watching such a great film. And for reasons I have no clue about, the music moved me to tears. Such great music!! Been sharing this with every bluegrass fans I know!!

Hi William, The narrative drama (not a documentary) is about my maternal grandparents, Charley and Ida Cox. The film is 90% true but enough things were changed to make for a film that I changed the names to Charlie and Ruth Abner, after his mother's side of the family. All from Jackson County, KY.
