As much as I love both Disney's The Great Mouse Detective and Don Bluth's An American Tail, both released at the same time in 1986, I actually feel that Great Mouse Detective is the better film, despite being beaten by American Tail at the box office. For one, Vincent Price as Ratigan...that's awesome! Two, it wasn't as depressing as American Tail, despite the fact we never see a single ray of sunlight. And three, there was no annoying mouse who sounded like she learned English from Elmer Fudd.
@JavierPerez-cx4jw6 жыл бұрын
KTChamberlain I prefer An American Tail personally. As fun as the Great Mouse Detective is, An American Tail always makes me feel better because of its darkness. It will torture you and make you agonize over Feifell until he finally gets home in one of the happiest endings in Animated Movie History. Plus, it just seems smarter. Everything’s a metaphor, whearas in The Great Mouse Detective it’s really just a bunch of Mouse puns. Again, I love both but American Tail takes the lead for me
@MrMarinus186 жыл бұрын
For me American Tail just went a bit too far. Don Bluth has always been known for being painful to watch. To be clear that's not a bad thing as it makes his movies have a very powerful impact and be remembered forever but it does also make his movies less enjoyable on a surface level. A land before time had that cringiness to it as well but was still fun enough that I want to watch it. American Tail is just painful that even though it will make me feel I just don't want to watch it. That's also why I don't consider Anastasia a Disney movie. It has that cringiness to it as well.
@matthewhedrichjr.54455 жыл бұрын
Agreed. American Tail was expensive than GMD, but it did not have any positive reviews. While Great Mouse Detective was a lower budget success and had low money than American Tail, it was more well liked than American Tail

Disney has tried very, very, very hard to make sure people haven't heard of The Black Cauldron. I think it may have had a very, very (very) limited release on VHS, but was never made available on DVD, Blu Ray, or any streaming sites (legally, anyway) etc. Which is actually a shame. It's a movie with some real faults, but it's not the worst movie and it actually does some things well. (A lot of time and resources was invested in it.) The faults were more with the premise than anything else. I think it could have a bigger appreciation today than it had in the 80s, especially in the day and age of medieval fantasy epics on the big and small screen that aren't so unlike the basic premise of the film.
@madelinehambrick12648 жыл бұрын

Am I the only one who recognized Basil from the thumbnail and knew where he was going the whole time? I mean, I didn't know the stuff about the Dark Ages and Bluth and whatnot, but I knew it was going to be the Great Mouse Detective he was talking about.

Blueth (?) made some AMAZING movies. Both of which I recall with great fondness as an important chunk of my young movie watching days. I also enjoyed almost all of the Disney Dark Age movies, though they were disliked by my sibling. Also, I think Jungle book probably counts as a dark age movie given that, despite its awesome characters, the story is kinda lacking.
