The estuary of the River Spey and its three villages - Garmouth, Kingston and Spey Bay. This video will be of most interest to people who know the area. Some great 4K footage that needs to be watched on a good TV or monitor - make sure you select to download in 4K if you have a 4K device, because you may be set to lower quality by default.

My question near the end of the video, about the origin of the lines of mounds, has been answered thanks to Richard. He reminded me that up until the mid 70s there used to be a concrete production site at the west end of Kingston where the playing field and carpark now are, and that the ridges are the remains from the extraction of many thousands of tons of shingle used in making concrete.

Brings back very fond memories, I was at school near this place in the late seventies / early eighties. I was a member of a gliding club a few miles away ( no longer there) and I even got involved in the Tugnet ice house project when it was converted to a museum. Great little video, enjoyed it immensely.

Thanks for the comments Rod. I'm having so much fun making these videos and seeing places from new angles. It's an extra buzz knowing other people can also get some enjoyment from them.

Beautiful footage. I wonder have you heard of a missing person from Aviemore (Rod Falcon). He possibly entered the Spey on 11 Dec 2022 a short distance upstream of Aviemore. His friends and family miss him. If you happen to be flying the spey again, please keep a look out for him ,he was wearing a red jumper at the time. Thank you .

Hi Mike, sorry but I had not heard about your friend, and I’m unlikely to be along the Spey again for some time. Well done for reaching out this way, you must be a good friend.

@@Highland-Highlights I didnt know him personally but he moved to Aviemore about 8 years ago and fitted in well. His friends and work colleagues still look for him although its believed he went in the river . I do research in my spare time to bring closure for families of missing people. Thanks for get back to me.

The ridges to which you referred are what remains of the overburden, which was removed to facilitate the extraction of the pebbles thus creating the quarry opened and operated by an entrepreneur by the name of Geddes before WW2. In addition, a stone crusher was built just beyond the west end of the village which gave employment to a considerable number of locals from Kingston and Garmouth. The whole story also gave the name to our cottage….Pebble Cottage.

Hi Pamela, thanks for the info. I assumed the concrete works grew out of the building of the WW2 defences, thanks for enlightening me. I know the ridges are connected to the removal of shingle, but I still can’t picture the process that shaped them.
