Just to clarify, I know that Spirit is still sweet as in his personality. Obviously! What I meant is the "movie" isn't as romantic to a human perspective. A lot of people when they find out about the reality of animals they are outraged. It is a natural occurrence and it's just the way things are. I did also say that Spirit treats all his women very well. So again, 😆 I meant in terms of the movie, it's not as romantic in human terms, although.... Hmmmm why isn't it sweet when human guys have a bunch of females and treat them very well or when a guy has many wives? 😏 I figured people would understand this but oh well. I fixed the title so there's less confusion 🙂

In The Lion King's script, Nala is specifically referred to as Simba's cousin, because her mother is Simba's aunt. To be fair, the horses in Spirit are somewhat anthropomorphized (he has a narrator from his point of view speaking directly to the audience, the horses make human-like expressions so we sympathize with them, so on and so forth), so I understand why some people get upset when they learn that horses don’t act as human-like as they initially thought. In general, this seems to be a staple with animated movies and books with feral animals as the main characters.

Spirit's father is talked about in the book _Spirit of the West 3: Esperanza._ Spirit did *not* drive him away as he was born long after his father, Strider, disappeared or was killed (I don't remember which). Regarding the two foals, they cannot be Spirit's as they are actually not that much younger than Spirit (it's hard to explain, but you can tell by the various scenes). Those foals are most likey the offspring of a joining mare. Also, similar to The Lion King, realism is not a true element in movies such as this. You had a good theory though.
@fennadevries68143 жыл бұрын
Spirit is probably around 3-4 years old, these foals are about 6 months to a year old, it is very pleasible that they are his foals as horses can already breed starting from around a year old.
@meganlodon3 жыл бұрын
@@fennadevries6814 Actually, it is believed that Spirit is at least 1-2 year(s) old in the movie, and even though this is not confirmed, he is definitely not that much older then those two foals. Also, the foals are always near Esperanza, not their own mother, as if they were adopted into the herd. With that said, there were other foals in the herd while Spirit was a foal himself. They, at least the majority, are not in the herd when Spirit is older. This would suggest they were males, and any one of them could have been the father. With all of that in mind, Spirit makes no mention, not even in the books, of these two foals other than the rescue in the beginning. He only addresses them as part of the herd, and not his own. If they were his, he would have given them special recognition. In conclusion, I will continue to _confidently_ say they aren't his until it is confirmed (or denied) by the author herself.

@@meganlodon Well he doesn't look like a 1-2 year old, he is not overgrown at his hindquarters or at his front, which suggests he's already closed most of his growing plates, so he must be older than that in the movie at least. @meganlodon3 жыл бұрын
@@fennadevries6814 So, you're basing essentially a cartoon with barely any realism to realism? Even the artists who drew The Lion King didn't get Simba to be 100% realistic even after being in the same room with a real life lion for hours. That said, I'm not basing the movie on its real life counterparts. It's not accurate to do so. So, instead, most of my assumptions are based on my analysis of the movie and what is portrayed therein. Like I said, I will continue to believe they are not his foals (based on what I have said before) until I am told otherwise by the author of the books, or by Disney themselves. It is odd that Spirit only has his sheath and not his scrotum. This is best seen when he jumps a large gap in the climax, and there is a full shot of him underneath. It would have been better if the movie makers would have picked a lane. Either show everything down there like a real horse or censor all of it. My Little Pony has its stallions completely censored, and the mares censored for that matter. It it reasonable to assume the pony stallions are fully intact and fertile. The Spirit movie has this wierd gray area between showing and censoring everything. Spirit himself looks like he got castrated. I wonder if the human captors did that to him offscreen.

I'd also like to add that Spirit technically isn't the leader of the herd. Herds are lead by dominant mares, and dominant mares also have a 'say' in who they let breed with them. Spirit is just the resident man bodyguard of the herd, but really he doesn't lead. Also it's unlikely that he's mated with *every* horse in that herd. It's very common for certain high dominance females to refuse to breed (though him being experienced might change that).

Not entirely true. By observing the way wild Mustang herds function, it is very obvious that BOTH lead mare and lead stallion lead the herd. In fact, some herds do not even have a 'lead mare' but they will always have a lead stallion, unless it's a bachelor herd. If mares aren't in their cycle, they may refuse to allow their lead stallion to breed, or play 'hard to get' with him, but when they are in heat, there's no way they refuse. Moreover, if the band stallion neglects that duty, the mares are known to wonder off to the neighbouring stallions to get covered and then they come back to their main herd. What I am saying is that mares who live in a harem with their band stallion will always initiate to mate (when ready) because it is their motivation to acquire foals from the strongest male.

@@weloveTM123 Not entirely true, correct. But for the most part wild horse herds are primarily lead by dominant mares (of course this may be regional). I haven't seen it with truly wild horses but in free roam herds I have seen in heat females reject males (ouch) and said in heat females even trying to fight the males. Like you said, their instinct is to breed to produce the strongest foals, so it's most likely they were driven away by the only available stallions. Hence, why I said since Spirit is obviously experienced and proven, it would be unlikely he'd be turned down by mares (since they're drawn to strong stallions).

Although its true that in the real world, Spirit would've mated with all of this mares to secure the success of his herd and bloodline or whatever, keep in mind, this is a kids movie about a horse that is "impossible" to tame that goes through hell and back to find his family again all while making friends with Little Creek and making moves on his horse Rain. I feel like the romance between Spirit and Rain was genuine and was shared just between the two of them. Think about it. When Rain had gotten shot and Spirit had believed that she was going to die and he'd never see her again, he was broken inside. He had given up on everything he had fought so hard for because he either didn't know how to move on without her or didn't want to. What snapped him out of it is his love for his family and how they need him and he needs them. Without sounding too dark, I don't think Spirit would've been too broken up over some random mare in his herd meeting the same fate he thought Rain would. Sure she's a member of his herd or whatever but you never see him treat them the way he treats Rain. Whenever Spirit is monologing and he talks about Rain, he speaks so highly of her and expresses his love for her and his desire to spend the rest of his life with her. Never does that for anyone else. I'd also like to point out that its possible that Spirit is not the only stallion in the herd and that the colts in his herd may not be his. They look nothing like him. It seems like if they were his, there would be some sort of resemblance but there isn't. They look exactly like most of the background horses in the herd Also I love that half the comments section is just Star Wars jokes

I mean yeah this is how real horses work but it’s strongly implied that in their universe they only have one mate. Like Lion King. Another basically impossible scenario is wild mustang twins. Horse twins are incredibly rare even in captivity. There’s a 1 in 10,000 chance for twins, and the chance of carrying them both to term and all three horses surviving the birth is nearly impossible. When they do, one is often very small and will not live without human intervention. So I think horse couples in a kids movie is the least of realism problems. As for spirit driving off his dad, canonically Spirit’s dad (Strider, who was Esperanza’s only mate) was captured and died. But good video trying to ruin childhoods for no reason lol. EDIT: “Mares are always gonna want a stallion to take care of them” oh lawd you’ve never met a mare have you EDIT 2: Holy shit how wrong can you be. He’s buckskin, not dun, which means he has one cream gene over a bay coat. Neither cream nor dun, by the way, inherently “make foals lighter” so they’re a “mix of their parents”. Horse genetics are crazy and largely unpredictable.

Lighter colored foals would end up in the second generation, not the first. And some foals (black foals especially), are born a lighter color than they will be as adults. The true color will appear with the shedding of the foal coat around 5-6 months. Bay horses will get their black lower legs around this time as well. Horses that will become greys have the opposite effect---those foals will have adult color saturation at birth, and will start to become grey when their foal coats shed. They will get lighter in color every year. (Jan Griffiths).

BowJack Horseman,before the transformation? Also seems like something that would happen in real life, between Wild Horses, and also I saw this movie when my Grandma got her first flip phone,back in 2009.

I have to clap this movie. I remember the first time i saw it as a child and i was AMAZED by how they portrayed a wild animal. Now as an adult I am still amaze. Never saw a movie like this. No unnecessary censorship or morals or impose to animals behavior in and extreme way. Everything is there. Amazing.

Strider: Spirit's father, a pure black stallion that was the former leader of the Cimarron herd, Spirit succeeded him. He was later on captured and put in captivity and died from not being used to it. ... He runs into Spirit a few times and eventually concedes in defeat that at least one horse will remain wild and free.

We don't put these two together because the new spirit is not worthy of the name or even being related to him he is a joke.

@@echidna7970 I think Spirit Riding Free deserves more credit, actually. I used to be doubtful and didn't like it, so I didn't watch it, but recently I have been watching it and, it is actually surprisingly good. The animation has it's limits of course, but it isn't distracting, and the story is actually exciting. A lot of the episodes drives the main plot forward. The voice acting is nice, the characters are good, like heck, I even liked the father, the teacher and Aunt Cora, despite them being adults and sometimes unfair! They're pretty realistic, even the bully Maricela was still a person, and I got emotional the first two episodes of the show, because Lucky was treated badly. I see the show has flaws, I am aware, but for being a kids show it is surprisingly exciting and sometimes dark, intense. It is rare to find a kids show with realistic, horrified screaming, too. I'm talking about that moment that Grayson had captured Spirit and Lucky was being dragged away when Spirit was like, tied up... I can see five-year-olds being traumatized at that. And I watched Animals of Farthing Woods as a child, I am emotionally prepared for dark moments. So, of course the movie is the best, but damn, you should not hold a grudge against this show. Dreamworks made this series work... It doesn't make me cringe, like a lot of other kids shows do.
