The term “treadmill” comes from those types of torture machines. They would make prisoners run, or “tread”, on wheels like that, often, but not always, connected to flour grinding mechanisms, or “mills”. Prisoners would often be forced to run for hours at a time. Tread mills are torture pass it on.

Such activities could be used as punishment and / or as a means to keep prisoners busy and mentally and physically exhusted. So, they functioned as a controlling and retribution method, even when disconected from a tangible end result (eg, grinding flour). In fact, if the activity had no purpose, it would be far more dispiriting to the prisoners and so a way to further punish and break them. A similar idea was the use of the, "crank"; a handle that they had to turn endlessly, for reason other than they were told to. Maybe, they got the idea from the ancient Greek story of the punishment of Sisyphus; where he was made to perform the pointlessly repetitive action of endlessly rolling a heavy rock up to the top of a hill, only for it to roll down to the bottom every time, and so having to start again.

You know, I don't think that's why it works. There's plenty of awful films that do the same things and are just rubbish. I think it's interesting characters, a cool story and engaging action that draws you in. Nearly every character has something to them. Take an incidental character like Winston. He's in the film for five minutes but what's his motivation? You know it because the film gives you the insight into him. The Americans, what are their motivations? Again, they barely have a line each but you get some insight. I think the film is all you've said, but it's this, plus a bunch of other elements too.

On playing into tropes. It's a great way to quickly familiarize the audience with the charecters and story. Rick O'Connell quickly establishes himself as an Indiana Jones, mans mans adventurer, and Evelyn as the female researcher, on a quest to find an ancient lost city, and because of the title we know they will be horror villained by the Mummy.

In response to why they'd put a curse on Imhotep that would cause him to become a plague on the world if he was ever resurrected; in ancient Egypt, when people still worshipped and were fearful of gods, the consequences of resurrecting him were far too terrifying and dangerous to ever dare to bring him back. The ancient Egyptians couldn't have anticipated more modern people dismissing Egyptian gods/curses as myths and superstition.

Hi, camel expert from 1926, the camel insult is totally justified. Decades of extensive breeding had created a whole subspecies of camels with short legs and humps on the bottom. That's why the camel vendor tried to sell Jonathan all the camels, the vendor knew they were faulty and wanted to get them off his hands.

Hello! As a Camel Expert from 1926, I can confirm there are some very, VERY subtle, but important distinctions between Beni's camel and O'Connell's camel. Breeding has shortened their legs significantly, and their humps are on the bottom now!

I happen to be an expert in Egyptian prisons and they actually used to built the human sized rat wheels in those prisons, they were made from wood that was ferried down the Nile from special prison plantations and this of course is complete and utter bullshit but it sounded good anyway and sorry guys I couldn't actually help you with the whole rat wheel conundrum. I also know bugger all about camels, but, you probably figured that out already.

"the spinoffs, all of which you've mentioned, are bad" - Mason Methinks some Caravan of Garbage needs to watch *all of the Scorpion King movies now.* :D Seriously though, I think James & Maso would be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the non-Rock sequels; they actually remind me a lot of Sam Raimi's Xena/Hercules shows in tone. I'm honestly kinda surprised there was never a Scorpion King TV show for, like, Spike TV back in the day starring the cast of those DTV movies actually; would've been fun.

Those scarab beetles gave me one of the most vivid nightmares ever. In the dream I was running to my room and it was chasing me and I closed the door and it just kept slamming into it and eventually slammed its way through the door and then I woke up. Happened at least half a decade ago and I remember it like it was yesterday.
