Stephen Sommers was picked to direct the project after his last film DEEP RISING bombed at the box office in 1998. Before Brendan Fraser was cast as the hero, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon Ben Affleck, and Brad Pitt were considered. The film was a box office and critical success making $420 million dollars against a $75 million dollar budget.
