Most of the best musicians that I know are, unknown and obscure. I'm 60 years old and have played live since I was 15. I made a living out of music, but the bills keep coming! 😂 People have told me that they could make me a star! Their the ones with no talent. Stay true to your music. Fame and fortune, such a curious game, two perfect strangers, yet they call you by name...Play what you feel and feel what you play.

Major labels are just venture capital and marketing firms that can leverage a national music pipeline/machine. You can be independent and do it all by yourself, which will take years or within 6 months your career can be already launched. There is value in being able to call and contact every program and music director at every radio station in every city in every state. Set up a 10 city promo tour in your region and you'll appreciate a major.

In the larger scheme of things the music industry is full of criminals and or drug addicts. When I was producing and recording song vocals, mind altering drugs were the most important aspect of an artist's productivity/happiness. I have smoked weed but these artists NEED it to function. I flew back and forth from FL to Los Angeles CA for 2 years and nothing about this industry is healthy. Nobody is on time to the studio. Poor eating habits. Artists club til 3am and want you be awake to record and mix their music on the fly. Oh and you better make sure you're not traveling with folks who have illegal firearms and drugs. I would catch Lyft because I did not trust friends of any music artist.

I still listen to the radio when I'm in my car and as much as I love and support my local "indie" stations which includes our state university station (which is considered a national top tier station) they still play mainly songs by artists that are on record labels. I would say it's at least 80%, probably higher. They play local artists but generally in a certain time slot and like once a week. These "local" artists really aren't local anymore. They tour and rarely play a local venue. That's up to us who still live here and have full time non music jobs yet the chances of us getting on local radio is extremally rare. From what I have researched, the majority of the artists commanding the top slots on the biggest Spotify playlists are signed to a label. That's why people like Justin Beiber never go away even when we all wanted that to happen years ago. It's estimated that 80% of the artist who have music on Spotify make $200 or less a year on streaming royalties. This probably means they just don't have that big of an audience even with gigs and merch sales to play music full time. It's also estimated that 20% of the songs on Spotify have never been listened to. Not even once. It's a safe bet that both of those categories are made up of true indie musicians in that they aren't sign to a label or a management or promo company. They do everything themselves and struggle for it. I feel like these are the big lies or misconceptions of the music industry. I've been playing and writing for over 40 years and as much as the technology has changed as far as recording and distribution not much has changed. The record industry calls the shots and only 1 to 5% of artists make the kind of money the public thinks all musicians make. That's where all the shocked faces come from when they find out how many musicians have to crash on a friend's couch instead of staying at a nice hotel while on tour or living off of gas station sandwiches instead of lavish catered meals.

Hello. I consider my success as an artist to have my work being published on my own as an independent artist. No one told me I could be an artist. I never asked anyone for help. One day I applied myself to become one. This is my success. I made it happen.

In their 1979 book, "The Platinum Rainbow," Authors Bob Monaco and Tim Riordan described this particular lie as "The Golden Reel to Reel and the Platinum Turntable" syndrome; yes, you have to take that particular moniker in the context of its time, when all audio production was analog, but it was just as true then as it is, now. Good video, and thanks!

Growing up. Father aswell mentioned how close to full blown up be able to make major moves. i.e. couple different bands during that time and some solo stuff.. Question way didn't we move California when it was most Opportune time. Never understood comments he'd make about 2 separate times contracts ready. Special events before signing. Pass 5 years myself gaining Knowledge about what's REALLY going on behind closed doors.. Finally understood what was telling me. Certain levels game fortune. No WAY AROUND.must submit to brotherhood. POINT BLANK PERIOD.

FB ads doesn't work tho. Except you... spent alots of money running ads in u.s.. you have to take people of fb to spotify. That's cost atleast 0.43 par clicks. Just run one cost me $250. And I run another ads in south America which cost way less 0.13c par clicks

If you're going to run Facebook Ads, I recommend using them to send people to more high-value tasks, like joining your e-mail list. That way, you reduce the amount of spend per interaction over time. Plus when they're on your e-mail list, you can better direct them to your paid offerings.

You can make it without them, depending on what you categorize as “making it”. You will never be as big as they are, unless you fall in place with the agenda. But you can make enough money to be comfortable, not rich.

Everyone want to take the easy way out they want everything to be handed to them not knowing this is a business the key word is business when you get in this industry you got to watch who you do business with or you can become a slave to thembut a lot of people don't have the hustle to do it their self to put the song out there so when they can just post it right from their phone go ask the local cameraman in your neighborhood to go shoot your video ain't no label ain't no manager nobody telling you to do this or or they not telling you that they that you owe them this generation is lazy and they need to understand every rapper that blows up no there is not selling their soul or anything they just know how to move and like their business right I know I know dude that's getting million views but they don't know nothing about monetizing their video cuz they waiting for somebody to come do it or they waiting for a cosign like dude you got over a hundred grand views just you're straight you don't need nobody this is the this the only thing I can say I like about the new generation they break the game back the independency and I'm talking about being all the way independent but people want to find out what independent is really is damn I got to pay for my pocket or I got to pay for studio time or I got to pay for my own this and my own stuff that's what getting people head and they overthink but you got to understand the mean key to this is business and if you don't know anything about business that's what a lot of people need to go learn and get their knowledge on business and knowing not to do the wrong business deal just because somebody got money don't mean you jump in head first

I'm a gigging musician who plays local shows for cash guarantees and tips. If and when I choose I can book tours for myself out far afield, without even having any kind of real online reputation. I pity and frankly look down on those who spend their "music careers" doing some other job for money and floundering around online clicking on various stupid little things and trying to Hype themselves up with highfalutin talk on social media hoping that someday their ship will come in, and feeling validated when a bunch of people click on something with their name on it. To me the stage is everything, the performance is all; everything else is just a bunch of newfangled bullshit. Yeah yeah I know social media can help you book better gigs and get higher guarantees Etc etc, but at the end of the day, if all you accomplished was getting a bunch of people to click around on your social media sites and look at videos that you post of you talking about yourself, what are you, really? A digital avatar, something reduced to zeros and ones. Not much, in my book. Real legendary players and songwriters let somebody else do the stupid clicking around on digital junk. Even bands that blow up on the internet, they usually don't stick around for long, and the people who are the real legends in their fields become legends because of the way they play and the way they write, not because of the way they post or how good they are at talking about themselves on the internet
