Major labels are just venture capital and marketing firms that can leverage a national music pipeline/machine. You can be independent and do it all by yourself, which will take years or within 6 months your career can be already launched. There is value in being able to call and contact every program and music director at every radio station in every city in every state. Set up a 10 city promo tour in your region and you'll appreciate a major.

In the larger scheme of things the music industry is full of criminals and or drug addicts. When I was producing and recording song vocals, mind altering drugs were the most important aspect of an artist's productivity/happiness. I have smoked weed but these artists NEED it to function. I flew back and forth from FL to Los Angeles CA for 2 years and nothing about this industry is healthy. Nobody is on time to the studio. Poor eating habits. Artists club til 3am and want you be awake to record and mix their music on the fly. Oh and you better make sure you're not traveling with folks who have illegal firearms and drugs. I would catch Lyft because I did not trust friends of any music artist.

I dropped my Music Video "Makka" on my channel planning to release more songs independently... Should I air on TV 📺 and radio 📻? Is Tv 📺 also not worth? Or only radio 📻 is outdated?
@CaptHiltz2 жыл бұрын
I still listen to the radio when I'm in my car and as much as I love and support my local "indie" stations which includes our state university station (which is considered a national top tier station) they still play mainly songs by artists that are on record labels. I would say it's at least 80%, probably higher. They play local artists but generally in a certain time slot and like once a week. These "local" artists really aren't local anymore. They tour and rarely play a local venue. That's up to us who still live here and have full time non music jobs yet the chances of us getting on local radio is extremally rare. From what I have researched, the majority of the artists commanding the top slots on the biggest Spotify playlists are signed to a label. That's why people like Justin Beiber never go away even when we all wanted that to happen years ago. It's estimated that 80% of the artist who have music on Spotify make $200 or less a year on streaming royalties. This probably means they just don't have that big of an audience even with gigs and merch sales to play music full time. It's also estimated that 20% of the songs on Spotify have never been listened to. Not even once. It's a safe bet that both of those categories are made up of true indie musicians in that they aren't sign to a label or a management or promo company. They do everything themselves and struggle for it. I feel like these are the big lies or misconceptions of the music industry. I've been playing and writing for over 40 years and as much as the technology has changed as far as recording and distribution not much has changed. The record industry calls the shots and only 1 to 5% of artists make the kind of money the public thinks all musicians make. That's where all the shocked faces come from when they find out how many musicians have to crash on a friend's couch instead of staying at a nice hotel while on tour or living off of gas station sandwiches instead of lavish catered meals.

I'm a gigging musician who plays local shows for cash guarantees and tips. If and when I choose I can book tours for myself out far afield, without even having any kind of real online reputation. I pity and frankly look down on those who spend their "music careers" doing some other job for money and floundering around online clicking on various stupid little things and trying to Hype themselves up with highfalutin talk on social media hoping that someday their ship will come in, and feeling validated when a bunch of people click on something with their name on it. To me the stage is everything, the performance is all; everything else is just a bunch of newfangled bullshit. Yeah yeah I know social media can help you book better gigs and get higher guarantees Etc etc, but at the end of the day, if all you accomplished was getting a bunch of people to click around on your social media sites and look at videos that you post of you talking about yourself, what are you, really? A digital avatar, something reduced to zeros and ones. Not much, in my book. Real legendary players and songwriters let somebody else do the stupid clicking around on digital junk. Even bands that blow up on the internet, they usually don't stick around for long, and the people who are the real legends in their fields become legends because of the way they play and the way they write, not because of the way they post or how good they are at talking about themselves on the internet

Music isn’t the only playground. People quick to point at artists, the leaders of the world are the biggest deceivers
