Changing your oil on a late-model F-150 PowerBoost (or even a standard F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L) is a major pain due to where the oil filter is located. It is an absolute beast to remove due to how crowded the lower engine is. I finally found the perfect tool combination to tackle this job and make my next oil change much easier!

I had a moron mechanic, at a Ford dealer no less, put on my F150 filter so tight it crushed the rubber gasket down to metal-to-metal contact! When finally got it loose I had a crushed, twisted, jagged remnant of a filter body left. With the methods you suggest I may have gotten it off with much less blood loss and swear words for the Ford dealership network.

No doubt they had a cap wrench rigged up to an impact wrench set for 150 ft-lbs. No wonder those cretins strip the OEM lug nuts. cheers Rick

I found a two jaw adjustable oil filter wrench with spring loaded jaws. You stretch it over the filter and it grabs on and stays put while you get the ratchet and extension in place. Works like a charm every time.

Another awesome video. I tried many a combinations trying to get my filter off my PB. I like the setup that you went with. Thank you for providing links to the items. I will be picking them up and trying the setup on my next oil change. Thanks again.

Thank you! This was so helpful! I used a 74mm cap instead of an 76, otherwise used a 3 inch extension and a 12 inch extension with a knuckle in between and a 3/8 regular ratchet wrench. Worked perfectly.

Terrific! Changing the filter on my PB is always the toughest part of the regular oil change duties. Thanks for putting all this together and sharing it with us! Also, for another video idea you could show the way you do tire rotation on your PB (assuming that you do it on your own), including what jack points you use, where you place the jack stands, etc.

Thanks David! At my last house I used to self-rotate my cars front/back on each side with a floor jack and hunk of an old tree...took me about 20 minutes in total which was preferable to driving/waiting. Unfortunately my driveway is literally THE WORST for working on trucks due to the slope, so I take mine to the local quick-lane for rotations. (hanging head in shame) Thanks for the suggestion, let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see. cheers

Thanks for another helpful video, I had the same problem, even the same black filter cap wrench. gave in the welding a 3/8 adapter to it, so it didn't go through to hit filter. I use a spring flexible extension. I like change drain plug to quick drain. Now if the black funnel below filter Ford put on didn't also drain to it's back, I'd have less of a mess.

Fantastic. Gotta get over to horrible fright soon anyway, need some low profile ramps for oil changes on the Camry, that T handle looks like a magic bullet for many situations and well worth it.

Nice, thanks! I just did my first oil change after the free one from the dealer. I installed a drain valve from your previous video and after fighting the oil filter, I am going to have to add these tools for the next one. Hoping to get my DIY oil change on the PB to 20 - 30 minutes. Took 85 minutes this first time.

You are exactly the person that I made this video for. I think 20 minutes is very do-able as well as saving probably $50 by doing it yourself, and putting in better stuff than what the shop would. Definitely worth those 20 minutes!

Good tools and video! Thanks for sharing. On my 2013 Eco, I use a wrench that’s made kind of like 12” channel-locks but with curved jaws that have aggressive teeth. I can get em up in there with one hand. They also work well.

Did my first on the 21 F150PB after the 2 included changes. What a mess the dealer made. Apparently little to no clean up after they changed oil and filter, plug on so tight I was afraid for the case and threads, drain plug mangled likely from use of an impact, under shield four 8mm bolts also overly tightened to the point of messing up the metal bolt holders and the shield holes itself. And YES, wtf was ford's thinking (if there was any real thinking) with the oil filter placement? I would love it IF you could pay a fair cost for service that wouldn't disappoint let alone paying $250.00 an hour for work that is schyt!

Good solution. Ford could have put the filter on top using a cartridge filter instead. Someone didn't think this through at the initial design stage of the engine! How do you prefill the filter with oil and install it without dumping half of it since the filter is oriented horizontal?!!
@fixorrepairdiy4609
@fixorrepairdiy4609 2 ай бұрын
I would prefer it being tied to the block without using hoses to route it on top of the engine. But yes, I'd prefer the location of the 2.7L filter instead of turning the oil change into an archaeology process.

Interesting. I always use a glove with the rubber lining so it doesn’t slip on the filter. I also find it easier if the truck is on its wheel instead of the ramps, I can apply more torque that way due to my arm angle. You have to give it a good twist but nothing an average male couldn’t do. But I do agree that it’s in a ridiculous spot.

Has anyone noticed their powerboost engine oil smell like gas. Is this normal? I’ve read in some forums that it’s normal for eco boost engines due to the short trips. I’m really concerned
@fixorrepairdiy4609
@fixorrepairdiy4609 3 ай бұрын
On the last two oil samples I've done, I've had some fuel dilution. I do mostly short trips below 10 miles so this is something I have to watch. If you're concerned, then do an oil analysis at blackstone and make sure that you change your oil no more than every 5k.

Sounds like the filter is being put on too tight. I change my oil every 5k, 1k, first time. I've never had any issue reaching or loosening my filter, and I have large arms. The filter should only go on snug, don't crank it down and you wont have issues.
@fixorrepairdiy4609

There's a very good chance that you're correct. I do torque the filter as tight as my hand will allow. (no wrench)

It would be super easy if every brain dead idiot didn't torque it to 200ftlb's. Literally hand tight, and a nice firm twist people... Then no tools needed; just a firm grip next time. I had to break an old golf clup today, flatten out the end and beat it loose from the top of the engine bay. Even the oil filter wrench just rounded out the end of it...

yabut...if you've ever had a filter leak on you from being UNDERtightened then you'll be like me and tighten the living $%^&* out of it even by hand torque alone. No filter of mine is gonna leak again. Unnecessary? Maybe.
