Don't forget to crack the fill plug BEFORE you take the diff covers off if you're reusing the stock cover. You'll be up shit creek if you drain your oil and can't refill it due to a corroded fill plug.

This happened to me on a 20 year old Illinois blazer. Couldn’t break the fill plug loose, ended up stripping the square peg. Had to fill it through the vent tube. Was thinking about making my own hole on the cover.

@@mcmuskie2563what did you guys use for front/back differentials, 75w90? Ford states we have a non limited slip differential unless you have the elocker, so what's the use of the friction modifier everyone adds to their gear oil? I'm assuming having the limited slip additive doesn't hurt a thing tho..
@ypisoni
@ypisoni 5 ай бұрын
@@hansvanhouten1781 I believe that valvoline 75w90 he used already comes with the friction modifier just in case, BUT and I might be wrong here, I don’t think the e locker style on these need friction modifier, I thought only the raptors have a limited slip on the front differential that needs the friction modifier.

I have a 21 f150 with about 40K miles on it. I just did my transfer case fluid change, which i barely use, and it was super dark. (ford wanted 400 dollars for it, i did it for 30 dollars including the pump) I was planning on doing my rear and front diff's and this video is excellent. I am a big fan of the gasket on my model vs the silicone on the earlier models. no need to wait for the gasket to dry. I will be going back with the stock cover until banks makes one for the f150 tho.

Oil level may be OK but you have no idea of the viscosity, silicon or particulate contamination levels, water contamination, additive conditions, friction modifier condition (if applicable), evidence of improper top ups (wrong lube), or other elemental contamination whether ferrous or non-ferrous. I first change it out between 20K and 30K when new after break in. Yes, I have easy access to an oil analysis lab.

I filled it up to half as you suggested and then I opened the original fill plug and put my finger inside the hole and I cannot touch the oil in the differential.I ended up adding a little bit more oil where now it’s 3 quarters full on glass sighting

changed mines at 125k for first time in my 2013 5.0. Fluid was dirty but not black. Gears looked good. No scarring or marring of gears and teeth on gears were perfect. Measured almost exactly 3.1 quarts drained and put same back in of Motorcraft gear oil. Did not use permatex green but a Felpro gasket from Advanced Auto and no leaks after several miles of driving. Very easy process so do not be intimidated.

I zip tied that line to the hardline above the diff. I might source some longer studs. These lines mount differently on almost every vehicle no matter which rear end you have. I assume that's why most companies don't include new studs, just new regular hardware. I wouldn't recommend trying to reuse the three factory studs. If you torque them down I feel it will strip the threads in the housing.

I do all rear diff and transfer case at 40k EXCEPT not the front diff. Would it be an issue to take it to 60k or 75k if you rarely if ever use the 4WD ?? Literally my 4WD has maybe 10 miles on it maximum ! My F150 is not an AWD.

Fluid is cheap but you could open the fill plug and check the color. Also good to put in 4WD every now and then to lube it up also put in Low a few times a year for same reason

Do not use aftermarket covers if you are under warranty!!! They void your warranty. Extended warranties included.

So whenever hit 40k can change it? Also that diff cover fit the f150 22 XLT ?
@BackroadDriver
@BackroadDriver 7 ай бұрын
You can change the fluid at any mileage you choose. The point is to get it done early. I will have changed mine at least 3 times by the time 150K rolls around. Your truck could have a 9.75 or an 8.8 diff. I have a link to both types in the description. You'll need to figure out which one you have.

@BackroadDriver

Ford only sells an open diff or an electronic locking diff from the factory. Limited slip on the trucks are aftermarket only.

Love my 2019 F150 5.0 but I must say Ford did two really stupid things on this model, 1 use a plastic oil and transmission pan, WTF! 2 would it have been too difficult to add a drian bolt on the front diff cover? Comon Ford get real here.

At $370.00 + TAX & whatever else, I like it, However I am an OEM Kinda GUY and at this price point I would "THINK" That this Company could at the very LEAST Include the "3" Stand Off Bolts that fit for the Brake Line Routing. (This is just me Guy's), But I just can't and won't Buy this for that Very Reason, And Just in case you have a TRUCK that is "Still The Under Factory"???? If you read their Disclosure, It "WILL VOID" your Factory Warranty??? (Hence, the Stand Off Bolts for the Brake Line Routing), Seem's rather Stupid to me that you can buy something to "Improve" upon the Look's AND The Function (Like Gayle Bank's) Unit, and it VOIDS your Warranty???? STUPID. Nice Piece, But a No Go for me. Sorry.

40k is very early unless you tow a lot but no way should anyone go over 100k no matter how easy they drive.

I tow quite a bit and the truck is supercharged so I figured that warranted a very early fluid change. I agree you could go a little longer. Every 50 to 60k sounds like a nice sweet spot.
