Herr Doktor B :) THANK YOU!!! for reminding me that my real hi-hat K's are capable of MUCH more musicality than even the best hi-hat samples - incredible complexity, tone and wash! Usually I waste waaaaay too much time trying to breathe life into a stiff sample when the real thing is staring me in the face! 💯

The ironic part is they probably thought of it as a compromise at the time, because samplers weren’t really up to the task of reproducing realistic hats and cymbals, due to lack of memory and therefore a lack of round-robin samples. (Single shot samples are fine for drums, not so much for cymbals). But early on also because samplers didn’t initially feature a sample rate that could do cymbals justice. But who knows, Mutt is a genius, maybe he would have recorded live hats and cymbals anyway.

Spot on I keep a folder called real Hi Hats Close, Open hard soft 1/4 16ths etc. Same for cymbals. VST Hats seem to fall apart when they're EQ'd compressed and/or limited. Nice to know I'm not alone on this.

Nice. The open hats when programming never sound legit to me either.

My solution for drum recording: Samples for Kick, Toms, Crash, Splash, China. Mono dry samples 24 bits @ 88.2 kHz or better. Multisamples (Dynamic levels + Round robins at each level) played by Drumagog. Drumagog driven by output of stock DAW monosynth. One instance each drum/cymbal. Controlled via MIDI, either played or programmed. Live hihat, snare, and ride cymbal. Individual takes for each. Close mic in a dead room. Mono recording. Apply individual tracks EQ & compression. Route all to Drum Bus. Drum Bus contains a bus compressor (I use Voxengo Deft) and Convolution reverb for the room.

The pressure with which the performer puts on a closed hat changes the pitch. I know that is very subtle but those variations in pressure and pitch puts an irreplaceable dynamic in the performance. I

I've been binging your channel. So much great stuff. Thanks man it's always a fun and informative ride. I'm sooo with you on the hats in libraries. IMO it's got so much to do with the fact that open hats in libraries are "open" and never "openING". There's no movement between the open & closed stages, and understandably so. All the different sloshiness that can be achieved with pedal pressure on the hats, just isn't there. It seems the instruments sometimes interpret MIDI CC (foot pedal) as different hat notes, and sometimes not. But something is missing with the CC interaction and various open/closed states. But again the opening of a real hat has movement, kind of like a vocal "mwah", and that movement isn't there in any library I've come across. When I'm just mucking around here I just leave the MIDI hats, but when it counts, I've got a Paiste hat I record solo like you show here. It's reassuring to find I'm doing one thing right. :) Please keep it up! I so appreciate your professionalism and realism, and diverse appreciation across the musical spectrum. Van Halen to Dua Lipa, I'm with you all the way. It's all good! :)

When you say that you've tried ALL virtual drum instruments and none of them deliver good HiHats (or Ride Cymbals, for that matter), I'm sure you haven't used MIXOSAURUS. A discontinued legacy instrument for a number of years now (still running in the latest versions of KONTAKT though) but still miles ahead of all the other stuff in terms of realism, especially in the cymbals/hats. Created by a drummer, and it comes with all sorts of pre-programmed (by a drummer) HiHat and Ride Cymbal MIDI files ready to use and/or analyze so non-drummers can actually learn how these instruments are played (which might give your programming abilities a lift for any software). Disclaimer: I'm that drummer, so obviously I'm biased :).

Yeah I basically do all live cymbals and keep the shells as samples for lesser priced projects. It works very well. Not only does the hat suck on programs, but so do the rides, and crash riding. It lacks the cymbal back swings and dynamic nuance.

As an engineer in 80/90 proper 24trk machines and mci/studer/otati/soundcraft/lyrec/ This video is Crap.. It does not consider the tape and compression and also MAINLY the time to reqind the tape and play again... I expect in my proessional I spend about 400% of tape time in rewind..
