Luka is the most Deserving as Dallas is the forth seed and his team is filled with a bunch of bums. No offence to jason tatum but the celtics have Jalen Brown, Marcus Smart, RW3 and Brogden which takes away alot of the presure from jason tatum.

This issue could help be solved by an OPOY award like the NFL has. Theres DPOY so why not OPOY. Keep MVP reserved for the most important player on a top seeded team, but OPOY for the guy that just has an insane individual season even if his team isnt ranked super high.
@StainMasters2 жыл бұрын
I’d agree but you’d see too many lapses with both awards since usually the best offensive guy is the MVP because his offense is contributing to wins

they do have an OPOY award. It's the scoring title.
@raptors111112 жыл бұрын
@Smiley Face :D not the same. It wouldnt just necessarily go to the highest scorer. Could be a guy thats like 5th in scoring but grabs rebounds, assists, and is super efficient. It'd still be subjective
@raptors111112 жыл бұрын
@Stain Masters thats true. Some years it would be the same guy. But not necessarily. And it gives a chance for a guy on a worse team to still be rewarded for great skills. Like if hypothetically it went to SGA this year. He has a 0% chance at MVP due to his bad team, but deserves some kind of chance at an award for how out of his mind he's been

MVP is a popularity contest ;) Why would anyone think otherwise? It's decided by voting, ffs. By definition, it's just like an all-star pick or any other accolade. The only objective metric, determined by actual play, is WINNING. All the rest, including stats, is just circumstantial and subjective. Why? Because individual stats are just a reflection of the team, the strategy and PR. Sometimes, building a "star player" or "face of the franchise" is more important (=more money) fot the team than winning. That's why we have all the 50-point games, triple-double accumulation, .. etc., - it's entertainment financed by the fans. The perception of having a "god" on your favorite team gets more money out of your pocket that just having a winning team with "no star". MJ proved that first. Just look at, for example, how Luka's play changed in the NBA compared to his play in Europe. As he put it himself : "Scoring is easier in the NBA than in Euroleague". Because the teams in Europe only care about winning and much much less about creating cartoon characters. Yes, there are MVP's and such stuff, but winning is everything here. Less games, less points, emphasis on team play, no stats padding etc. Yes, we don't have as many great players in Europe (because they are all bought by the NBA's enormous wallet), but a lot of NBA's great players of today come from Europe and many of them become stat monsters (Luka, Jokic, Giannis,..) when they had very different numbers over here. My point is: NBA is about show, so don't complain when you get exactly that.

The current generation of players are ruining the award and the league. There are only a handful of players that could compete with the players of the 70's, 80's,90's and early 2000's. The league is the softest its ever been and except for a few teams there is little to no defense being played at all times. Every game is a 3 point shootout and dunk contest. While it can be entertaining at times its just not the way basketball was meant to be played. I hope that pendulum swings bk someday.

And throughout the season you know exactly who is in the lead with the MVP coming down to some accepted algorithm that takes into account which metics? I love the video, you are valid that the award comes down to narrative and voter fatigue is bs. Old school rules wouldn't give props or give out too many rewards to a player who isn't goated etc etc but would you rather have someone like lebron or MJ win 5 in a row? It does the league some good to shine the spotlight on other players once the best players of the era have gotten their shine.
