Here's what you can do with the MXL 990/991 package, the Boss RC-2 loop station, and a little practice!

Hi Chris! You're correct! I switched to the Sennheiser HD280s a while back. They're great reference headphones for the price. It makes a big difference to have a good pair of flat sounding headphones to use for reference. If you're not in the market for new gear, I'd recommend doing your best with the Bose, and then also listening with other headphones, car speakers, your computer speakers etc. If you can make it sound good on all of those, it should sound pretty good everywhere else! Good luck!

ST51 Actually! And I love that thing... I got it back around the middle of 2007 and I still use it for all kinds of things. It's obviously no Neumann or AKG, but it's really great for the price.

@33Deer33 Yeah It really sounds awesome! The only eq on the 991 is a little boost in the 80Hz range for the bass drum to come through more clearly. And then of course I added a little reverb for sparkle as well ;D The only thing I would warn about for micing drums with the 991, is that it's loud. Like very loud. A -10db pad switch on the mic would have been helpful. I had to put my preamp pretty low for it to not clip.

@JORDOCARR Yeah you do need something to convert the XLR type cable from the microphone to the TRL type input that the RC-2 has. :( I'd recommend something like an M-Audio Audio buddy, or a small mixing consol!
@JoeBarnardMusic13 жыл бұрын
@TheUsed707 SUBKICK! That's the word for it! Hahaha I couldn't figure out what I should call frequencies that low for the longest time... As for interfaces, here's the rundown: The 990 is running through an M-Audio Audio Buddy, Boss RC-2 loop pedal, then into a line input on a Behringer UB1202. The 991 is plugged directly into the 1202 via XLR of course with 48v phantom power. From there, I pan each mic to the left and right so I can run them via RCA cable from the tape out, to my M-Audio 1010lt

@TheUsed707 Okay, right. The M-Audio 1010lt is a big fancy sound card that I bought a few months ago. After the card, the digital signal is going into Adobe Audition! Hope this helps, and let me know if you want to know more! (I could write a 15 page paper on this setup...)

I noticed you are using the Bose around ear headphones in this video, but you use, I believe, the Sennheiser HD280 headphones in your newer projects. Did switching headphones make that much of a difference? I'm asking because I have a pair of those Bose, and not having any studio monitors or other headphones, I'm forced to mix with the Bose. I found that the Bose have a ton of extra bass, so after I eq and listen on other earplugs or speakers, it always sounds really thin.

I stumbled upon your channel as I was searching for a new microphone to purchase. I ordered the MXL 990 Condenser Microphone. The instrumental you made in this video with the harmonizing and the drums is absolutely mind blowing. I'm a rapper(this is the part where everyone stops reading because they think that all rappers talk about the same thing).I write poetry and I incorporate that into my music.The videos I have on my channel aren't that good quality, but give me a chance and check it out.
