A ripper isn't unheard of, as the Parasite of Mortex which caused the world of Mortex to be overrunned by Ripper swarms. It's small enough to hide on the ship, spawn quickly enough to kill everyone onboard, and the brood of Rippers could hide in hard to reach and therefore scanned areas to avoid detection. Once off the ship, well, they could easily overrun an unprepared world.

It may have been this terrifying thing. In the first half of M48 a war of reclamation had been declared on the desert planet of Oceanum. During the ides of the fifth month of the campaign, two tactical squads of Mega Marines were ordered to the front line. Unfortunately, due to a significant decrease in the budget for that fiscal year, they were forced to go by foot. Soon after setting out, they came across a regiment of Imperial Guardsmen under attack from a large contigent of Ork Kommandos. The Mega Marines, devoted to the common man as always, believed it their moral duty to support these men in battle. After the ensuing battle, reports were written up. After the ensuing writer's cramp had finally dissipated, the reports were promptly filed in the Administratum approved manner and never thought of again. Meanwhile, a nearby mining facility embedded in an asteroid orbiting Oceanum's two suns, had ceased all contact without Administratum approval. It was noticed within a few weeks, but was written off as an Ork raid of some sort and promptly placed at the bottom of an ever growing Administratum approved to-do list forty-two feet long. Placed firmly below jet-ski vacations, the unapproved lost contact incident was soon forgotten. Forty years passed before an investigative task force was sent to the mining facility. When they got there, they found the entire facility devoid of life. There weren't even bodies. Except one skeleton, bearing the tattered and faded robes of a member of the Administratum. Grasped in its left hand was a dataslate. Having long lost its charge, a member of the task force took it back to the ship they had arrived on, and began the long process of charging it. Hours of investigation later, they had found only one thing of note. There were no signs of damage or struggle. The inhabitants had simply vanished into thin air. When the team arrived back at the ship, they reviewed the dataslate. What they found was so shocking and utterly horrifying, only the ship's pilot out of the thirty person crew avoided a gradual decent into complete and utter insanity. What they found was that the Administratum Scholar had actually been an intern working over the summer when the war had begun. The reason for the mass disappearances was that he had made a typo on an inventory report, which on top of overly excessive wait times, and constantly signing in octupilcate, had caused everyone to just decide they would rather found their own asteroid mine without the bureaucracy. Unfortunately, they forgot that asteroids are generally located in the middle of space and they all promptly suffocated to death in the cold and merciless vacuum. *BUREAUCRACY* Terrifying, am I right?

Who's to say that there weren't more than one tyranid organism on the ship, possibly multiple types as well?
@gregorygreenwood-nimmo49546 жыл бұрын
It could just be an unknown bioform not yet codified by Imperial forces. The Tyranids are depicted as endlessly adaptable after all, with countless tricks up their carapaces the Imperium, and the other factions of the galaxy, have not seen yet. Whatever slaughtered the crew and passengers of the evacuation ship and caused Adri's Hope to go dark could easily be something not in any current codex or specifically identified in the existing lore. The first rule with the Tyranids is that there are always more and different alien killing machines, that bring with them new and interesting ways to horribly gribble (definitely a technical term) you to death.

Before considering what creature was brought to Adri's Hope, we should consider how big the transport was. The "AVERAGE" size for an Imperial transport is so large that it could almost carry the U.S.S. Enterprise,(Star Trek-T.O.S.) in its shuttle bay. The red terror could have stowed away on the vessel, and hidden itself in a place where no one would find it. What probability happened was that a significant number of organisms were onboard the vessel. There is also the possibility that those organisms were not tyranid, but wanted everyone to think they were.
@40KTheories6 жыл бұрын
The average size of a naval transport vessel that is able to make planetfall can range from an Arvus Lighter (that can carry at most a couple of squads) to a Tetrarch heavy lander (which can carry a company of soldiers) or the Devourer dropship (which can carry a company plus a number of tanks.) While the Cetaceus class transport *is* considerably larger, that class of ship doesn't actually make planetfall as it typically does void deployment.
@rodneykelly87686 жыл бұрын
Could the Tetrarch travel through the warp? How long would it take to load a vessel that could? To efficiently load a transport, it would have to be on a planetside port facility; otherwise it would take months to complete using Tetrarchs. The vessel would then crash land on Adri's Hope. @@40KTheories
@40KTheories6 жыл бұрын
Has *anything* in the Imperium ever been efficient? And given how the conflict lasted at least 20 days, then yes if things were organised that gave the world's population approximately 3 weeks to evacuate as many of the world's population as possible. Why would such a vessel would crash seeing as the one that travelled to Adri's Hope made an automated planetary landing? A heavy transport would not be able to do that, since most Imperial space craft above a certain size are incapable of atmospheric flight (hence the prolific use of dropships and landers). Warp travel doesn't even necessarily need to be a factor in these vessels escaping, given that the Tyranid's shadow in the warp makes warp travel ridiculously dangerous to attempt.
@rodneykelly87686 жыл бұрын
Three weeks to evacuate a planet, even with a year’s worth of planning, that would be impossible. During the Armageddon conflict, an Astartes vessel named “The Purest Intent,” (repurposed by the orks,) crash landed intact on Armageddon. That is all an Tyranid assault force would need. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJLLdH94otZ7pKs Any destination that did not require warp travel would have been under Tyranid attack already.

I think the beast was a Space Marine. A single Lamenter either dragged aboard the transport wounded or ordered to evacuate for some reason. Driven insane by the constant losses his chapter suffers and not being allowed to die with his brothers, he first takes out his rage on the humans on the transport and then the colony. That's if he killed them - maybe he turned to chaos rather than just going insane and cut off communications to set up his own little kingdom in peace.
@thedaythatendsinY5 жыл бұрын
Alternative idea. There was no creature on the transport vessel. Rather the crew and passengers were killed by a person(s) who had lost their minds due to what they had seen before boarding the transport. A member(s) of the security team that investigated the ship and found its contents were so struck by the sight as to lose their minds or otherwise push them to the worship of the chaos gods. Perhaps because seeing so many slaughtered by their own they lost faith in the Emperor. This gave rise to a cult of chaos (insert preferred god) which spread quickly engulfing the planet where those not loyal to the gods were slaughtered and those loyal simply refused to communicate with imperial authorities. Not at all likely but a fun mental exercise none the less

I think it's the Red Terror, though I also have a theory it might be a Zoanthrope. More on that below. Simply put, it's model is only a bit bigger than a ravener but all art suggests to me a greatly distendable mouth, if not body suggesting that it can eat like a snake does, swallowing things whole. This makes me think that being the size of a mawloc isn't a requirement for it's swallowing whole ability. I doubt either a Lictor or a Genestealer would have killed the occupants. Lictors are intelligent enough to realise that their job on the world and the subsequent hive fleet invasion would be a hell of a lot harder if it was on the war footing, so it would likely stay silent and just sneak out when the refugees left. Doesn't make sense to kill a load of refugees so their biomass rots and alert the planet that something bad is going down. A lone genestealer would have likely tried to infect the people, forming a cult, rather than murdering them all. Hormagaunt also seems unlikely because, yes, while they can lay eggs, these eggs would need to be able to draw resources from the world around them, since a Hormagaunt probably doesn't have the energy, nutrients etc. to put into an egg to grow another one of itself, let alone hundreds and besides, the security team would have noticed a horde of them. The possibility of one hormagaunt doing this is possible but Hormagaunts are basically attack dogs with big claws and a regular human with some kind of weapon like an improvised club or even an unarmed strong human can win a 1v1 with them, let alone 1 hormagaunt vs a lot of refugees. Now, onto my theory of Zoanthrope. Zoanthropes are generally silent, with no war cries. They float, so no sound of hooves hitting metal. They are slender and tall, meaning they might easily find their way into a vent or something. We can even theorise that if it was discovered, it might exert some mental control over it's discoverer. If a Zoanthrope were separated somehow and found it's way onto the ship, it would be well adapted to hiding. In addition, as it's basically all brain, it would be intelligent enough not to go on a rampage and this was shown on the Doom of Malan'tai. However, we know the Tyranids do not use warp travel, instead utilising narwhal created gravity tunnels. So when the ship entered the warp, we can't be sure how a Zoanthrope might react or even if it could control it's power, which could have lead to the slaughtering of everyone on board, in an outburst of uncontrolled or confused psychic rage.

A ravenor is either too big or out of place scince he excells in burrowing and this is no where near stealth scince he would leave huge holes in the ship. A sigle gant would not be able to take out a huge amount of ppl singlehandedly and would need to breed inside the ship. Can a Genestealers cult fall to chaos if the patriach is corrupted?
@40KTheories5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Chaos Genestealer Cults are mentioned in the 7th and 8th edition Genestealer Cult Codecies.

@40KTheories5 жыл бұрын
Again they are mentioned in the Cult Codecies. There's a bit of information on how a particular cult ended up falling to Nurgle after accidentally ending up in his garden.
