Loved Mr. Ed. From something I heard way back, Bamboo Harvester passed I believe in 1970, from intestinal issues. My grandfather was an actor (later turned to politics), and he was heartbroken when "Mr. Ed" passed. Not sure how accurate that is, but that is what he was told. Also, the last part of the story was he was cremated and remains buried where he was born, (I believe that is what he said). I was only 9 when he died, but when Grandpa told the story, I remember crying my eyes out.

While I cannot claim expertise in this particular situation as a horse person I can say that in the instances described by Alan Young it is feasible that his temporary caretaker may have mistaken the rolling and struggling as colic, a catchall term for gut pain in horses. Today, and even a couple decades ago, it is/was common to administer a painkiller known as "bute". If the colic is caused by gas, the painkiller stops the horse thrashing and perhaps causing gut torsion in their attempts to stop the pain. However colic caused by blockages or by gut torsion will kill a horse without veterinary intervention but there is no way to know that when the colic symptoms begin. Worse yet is that stupid mistakes, like an overdose of bute can kill the horse, and yes, I know someone whose vet killed their mare by messing up dosage. Add in the mentions of this horse supposedly having issues with kidneys or liver and any drug administered becomes a dangerous guessing game. Mr. Young's story sounds more than plausible, it has just been filtered through layers of people that didn't understand what they were hearing.

Recently, I watched through season 1 of the show. The thing that struck me was that it was somewhat vague as to whether Mr. Ed was 'actually' talking (the horse-talking didn't happen until Wilbur got struck in the head with a rake handle)...so the creators' were at first creating a explanation for the whole thing (maybe it was just in 'Wilbur's mind'), which after the overall concept was accepted by audiences, gave them a free reign from then on out. In other words, the creators hedged their bets at first. Good video, thanks for posting.

Bamboo died long before I was born. I loved watching reruns of Mr. Ed on 'Nick at Nite' as a pre-teen in the late 1980's... Wilber & Ed were great together 🐎🐎

I remember being 7 years old and dragged out of bed at 1130pm by my parents to be shown a rerun of old TV show with talking horse. 30 years later a I still remember that night.

I saw Mr. Ed when it first aired on tV. I Had a talking Mr. Ed puppet with his actual voice on it, when you pulled the chord. Years later, I took the puppet apart and discovered a tiny record and record player in it. So that's how those things worked! But it was fun while it lasted. Later I found out that Elly Mae Clampet appeared on the show and rode him. Wow!She was supposed to be Wilbur's niece I believe. Donna Douglas was really an animal keeper, and those animals on the Beverly Hillbillies were hers.

I remember researching this and going down the rabbit hole that is Mr. Ed. Or specifically Bamboo Harvester. I actually talked to people who were once removed from the real players and I got several different versions, none of which could be verified. Poor Mr. Ed. I LOVE this show.....the more you watch it the funnier it gets. It was/is pure clean family entertainment.

I discovered Francis the Talking Mule and then Mr. Ed shortly thereafter. It always seemed to be a strange coincidence that there were two talking animals starring in Hollywood, one on the silver screen and one on the small screen, but I enjoyed them both immensely. Mr. Ed was one of my favorite animal starring shows, along with Flipper and Gentle Ben. I remember the SNL skit about Mr. Ed but I didn't take it seriously because SNL regularly got dates and information about the passing of important people in the world wrong, mostly for laughs but never worried about being accurate, and it wouldn't be until much later that I learned that it was the passing of Mr. Ed and now, thanks to you, I know that the horse that passed wasn't the horse used on set next to Alan Young but still he was a part of the Mr. Ed family and so it was okay for that faux pau to have been made in not correctly identifying between the on set animal and the one used for publicity stills and such. Another good video, Dave.

Thanks Kirk! And you're right, the horse that passed away in 1979 was part of the Mr. Ed family. And, for that very reason, Alan Young didn't say anything...even though he knew that the real Mr. Ed had died years earlier.

@@jdsundstrom I'm sure that he fondly remembered working with both horses and just remembered them as one horse for simplicity sake.

I watched Mr. Ed in reruns around 1978. The show came on at 7 am, perhaps just in time for the kids. I watched it as I sucked my morning coffee and then had to burst in to action, the ol' S S S, before heading out for work. Mr. Ed got my weekdays off to a merry start.

One of the best was when Clint Eastwood was on the show, and when Ed went to visit the LA Dodgers. A lot of the filming was done at Griffith Park. Ed”s trainer said he was so easy to work with and he would hold his bowls all day and a lot of the scenes were done on the first take. If you notice all the cool cars were Studebakers , they sponsored the show. My all time favorite TV show
