In the black furrow of a field I saw an old witch-hare this night; And she cocked a lissome ear, And she eyed the moon so bright, And she nibbled of the green; And I whispered "Wh-s-st! witch-hare," Away like a ghostie o’er the field She fled, and left the moonlight there. W. De la Mare

A fantastic video containing an amazing overview of Hare lore, really enjoyed it, thank you. Would just like to raise a quick point though in relation to the use of the tribal name Iceni... bearing in mind our only reference to the term is via classical Roman texts and the appearance of the letters ECE minted on some later Iceni coinage, the letter C in Latin is hard and should be pronounced K. Thus, Ikeni or Ekeni, is the correct pronunciation. Warmest regards, from an archaeologist born in the county of Norfolk, UK.

So glad you enjoyed it. You are quite right; jack rabbits are actually hares, not rabbits! I think they are amazing.

In slavic folclore, goddess Lelya has strong connections with hares, as she is goddess of spring, love and attraction. Also in some folk tales Yarilo, one of the main summer gods, could transform himself into the hare. Unfortunately, pagan slavic culture suffered a lot of loss after christening and we know way too little about actual gods of old times, their magic and hierarchy. Thank you for the video, it was very informative and interesting.

Thank you for bringing to our attention the respect and admiration that our ancestors had for the wonderful hares (and rabbits as well!) I have been lately studying them and found that they have something extraordinary that I can't quite voice or fully understand yet, but that makes them precious and unique. I am not surprised at all that they ancients had taboos against killing and eating them - most Siberians still do to this day! but in America they are now killed massively and wastefully - often without using the poor dead hare or rabbit carcass for anything. If confronted, the "hunters" get offended that you "dare" tell them not to kill "prey" "bottom of the food chain" and even "pests", "varmints" and "plague". Gardeners and Farmers shoot, trap and poison them. And these are NATIVE wild animals! This happens with total support from Universities and State and Federal "Wildlife" "agencies"! Yet now the new and extremely rabbit hemorrhagic disease threatens ALL species of wild and domestic rabbits and hares with high fatality rates and extinction for already endangered species of rabbits and hares the world over and the potential to make all rabbits and hares endangered. There is NO cure, no practical vaccines for hares at all. The recommendation is thus that we reduce the pressures we put on those species to give them the best chance at surviving these viruses, but, noooo, we are doing the opposite, destroying them for kicks "because they reproduce like rabbits lol". Perhaps when The Mysterious Hare becomes a tale lost in history and no hares are around to appreciate then will all these killers see their grave error. But by then, it will be too late...
