5:53 it's very interesting the book Kelly is holding is by Johannes Trithemius. It doesn't say, but its likely J.T.s' book Steganographia, a book that reads like your stereotypical book on summoning demonic and angelic entities, trapping souls in crystals, etc but in reality is a book on hiding text in coded language. J.T. was the teacher of both Paracelsus and Cornelius Agrippa. John Dee was well aware of this book as well.

I was lucky enough to see this painting close up in the archives of the Wellcome Library! The story about the skull array was a bit eerie when you’re standing right in front of it - it’s pretty big and that empty space right in front of Dee really draws you in.

John Dee was Anglo-Welsh. In Welsh his name translates literally as “John the Black”.

John Dee was interested in his Welshness. I believe if I remember his diaries; he travelled to Newcastle Emlyn in Carmarthenshire to trace and contact his cousins. It’s noted that one of his cousins was one Thomas Jhones, who is the Welsh ‘Robin Hood’, also known as Twm Shon Cati. So indeed, the Welshess of Dee is worth noting.

The four skulls represent John Dee's wife and two children that died during the Bubonic Plague. His one son was actually speculated to be Kelleys. He also had two daughters, yet their fates are unknown. It is speculated at least one or both of them perished in the same epidemic.

Well done. I would not be surprised to learn that the artist created and then deliberately hid the skulls (and other details) as homage to the hidden supernatural rather than a desire to tone down the visual story. The absence of the floating alligator (or crocodile) and Edward Kelly in the X-Ray image (along with other items) could be a statement of another sort; I've read that some consider Kelly to have been a deliberate charlatan who manipulated and deceived Dee. The painting certainly encourages exotic speculation.

Terrific video. As a former scientific rationalist, who abandoned science when it couldn't explain my repeated prophetic dreams, I found John Dee to be an inspiration and ceremonial magick a better method for understanding reality. Enochian Magick is the child of Dee and Kelley. Ah, the con man Kelley who Aleister Crowley believed was one of his incarnations. Did he have a real gift for scrying? My best guess is yes, the Enochian messages he received are too internally consistent to be gibberish, and people practice such magick to this day with remarkable results, but since this happened half a millennium ago, all we have are guesses.

Newton was similarly a hermetic scholar. Their kind of high-brow esotericism wasn't necessarily equated with witchcraft. This started to change with the translation of the OT into English, but it wasn't until the age of enlightenment that the incompatibility of science and magic became the consensus

It's pretty ironic because science is just magic that works. And belief in magic probably fueled the imaginations of the enlightened. You can't write a great work by learning a dictionary, or paint a masterpiece by watching someone paint a house. Magic was ultimately just a way of conditioning the mind using ritual, allegory or other various methods, so the intellect could follow along, speculate and strive for ideas beyond the limits of human comprehension. It's sad that its place was lost.

I think Newton was certainly interested in alchemy rather than the hermetica. Casaubon had discredited the antiquity of the hermetica by was it early 17th. The idea that the modern scientific method that discovered germs, MRI scanners and penicillin owes anything to that part of him other than by coincidence is ridiculous. Those groundbreaking discoveries may have involved methods of deduction with involved one or two elements of Platonic logic or Aristotelean reason, but those elements could have been set out by anyone, including someone who didn't believe that they alone where privy to the secrets of nature and the secrets of perfect morality.

1. Kelly's is fairly well documented, along with his published books. You just got to know where to look and find. Some are not widely accessible to the common man before recent years. 2. You say lines between magick and science became blurred, but remember there was not the word Science back then, it was a fragmented territory: math, geometry (eclucids work that Dee translated from greek/latin to english), religion (which incorporated magick), alchemy, navigation, copy of books by handwriting until Gutenbergs method spread around the world, but it was a costly process to get a book printed, so writing by hand was what Dee mostly did (besides his printed books). 3. You should visit the London museum and show the wax tablet, his image of God and other magick tools that are preserved. 4. Mention how many of his manuscripts on enochian magick surfaced from a furniture, where Dee had made a secret room to store the stack of papers he wrote, often encrypted, several hundred years after Dee had died. 5. That he had ownership of the largest museum of books/manuscripts. Larger than any other in England, perhaps Europe. He was a collector and compiler of ancient knowledge. Well educated and spoke several languages, including the enochian language that he and Kelly received during their many years working together summoning spirits that dictated this knowledge to them. 6. Aleister Crowley continued Dee's work and gained a lot of knowledge from practice the same rituals as Dee did. Crowley had another person serving as Dee's role, writing down what Crowley saw and heard looking into the crystal, working the tablet and building the massive complex altair that the angels gave instructions how to construct. 7. Polen was not Polen as we know it, it was called Bohemia under the rule of the King of Bohemia, which was very interested in magick and spiritual matters. He had the title The Holy Roman Emperor. Besides those things that would spice up your presentation, I did enjoy it. Thumbs up ofc.

Definitely added after the picture was completed, and the dark heavy figure made this way to cover up the background from showing through, but clearly absent in the xray. The artist may have felt the "weight" of the scene played to heavily on the left side of the canvas and added the dark figure to bring some equality across the scene. There does not seem to be anthing really sinister, but I cannot see clearly enough to tell what is being covered.............Perhaps something was there that would have been incredibly offensive, such as items deemed to have no purpose other than magics, and perhaps the darker end of that realm, was visible before the assistant was added.

I went thru many portals and or Stargate. One was in a sbig quare room that I KNEW was like a scarab transporting me there. Another I was flying lije an Isis pose with my arms stretched out to either side and my feet straight down. I could travel in any direction at the speed of thought and the time was connected to the angle I went. I had another where I was what looked like space but in the craft that was almost identical to a walnut or brain. Flat on the floor but had 2 sides lije 2 halves of the brain. Another ti N e I was in this Stargate device where the lid came down and closed and there was maybe six of us in that machine. I went to this most brilliant looking galaxy type place that was home to endless amounts of souls that were translucent with many multi level floors that these beings would just float they the walls or floors to go up or down depending on where they are going... upon entering this MASSIVE spiraling galaxy looking place but the vivid display if colors had ever seen with many different vibrant colors that had a direct connection to the beings there. I knew if they evolved or dis something to earn a change in place. Jot quite sure but I did see one level playing a real life game and if the died or they failed they would sink to the floors below and stay over. The different colors that changed when looking at this place from afar was a show stopper. If there was ever a real place like "home" or a heaven this was it!! Everyone was right where they belonged and the vomits were FULL SPECTRUM. a phrase I heard. This wasn't OVER the rainbow IT WAS the rainbow. I saw this entity in a deeper level that reminded me very much of the Egyptian God of the afterlife that was half crocodile and half hippo if I remember correctly.. i was in the reddish area with hue if yellow and orange.. he had this huge transparent egg shaped device in his hands that had inside what looked like a lava lamp....as I stood there watching he suddenly flipped the egg shape see thru aperatus upside down and I could see the lighter material rushing to the top as the heavier more dense material stayed or sank to the bottom.. soon as this lighter goo rose to the top I was transported out of there instantly. .
