I remember when the SCP wiki only had about 2000-3000 SCP’s back in the mid-2010’s and when the fandom was a lot smaller than it is now. This SCP was one of very few “Safe” SCP’s where I was genuinely creeped out as a kid. It’s wild how unique, yet unnerving, it is.

This one gave me chills as a teen discovering the SCP wiki for the first time. This one, and the recording of a basketball game where the people in it slowly realize over repeated viewings that they're trapped in a loop. Edit: SCP-1733. Not that anyone asked, but I think the most existentially terrifying part is that the Foundation doesn't destroy it, they just say "Yeah that got pretty bad we shouldn't test it anymore" and stored it away. The people inside are just hanging in stasis, waiting to wake up in the next loop. And the actual people in attendance left and lived their lives, these are just the copies that lost the coin toss and ended up in hell for no reason.

As a Near Death Experiencer, I can tell you that the only hell I saw was attached to and in the hearts of people living in this life experience as human beings. It was heartbreaking. Those I loved most being some of the most tarnished. This isn't a statement to add to the theatrics of this SPC either. What I love about SCP is that the ratings of Safe, Euclid and Keter are not how dangerous they are. SCP-1981 is Safe but it severely affects your psyche and one and be Keter and just be a friendly little guy, it's all about how hard they are to contain
@nouhorni3229
@nouhorni3229 9 ай бұрын
That's how it was intended, not everyone is aware of that. Naming the containable class "safe" was a mistake, apart from being a misnomer it drove people to overuse Keter and Euclid where they shouldn't.
@ADcommenter
@ADcommenter 9 ай бұрын
If SCP 999 was able to squeeze through any containment chamber, then that would therefore make it "apollyon". Or if SCP 096 simply had a bag on it's head, and all of it's photos are destroyed, then it's technically "safe".
@thunderspark1536

@@ADcommenter There's a reason the classifications are basic and more general, it's to help get new people adjusted to the whole idea (both irl and in universe) of the scps.
@haka-katyt7439
@haka-katyt7439 9 ай бұрын
@youraverageyoutubecommente5212 thing is 096 was at one point a wild animal in the Himilayas(?) (Somewhere in the mountains) and if it's face were to be seen it would break through any barrier on its warpath. During said proposed breach it has a high likelihood of tearing the bag. Remember 4 pixels killed countless people. And it's impossible to know how many photos of its face exist until it's triggered. So imo Euclid is a fair classification for the skinny white boy
@haka-katyt7439
@haka-katyt7439 9 ай бұрын
@@ADcommenter Also 999 would still be safe since 999 has 0 intent nor purpose to escape containment, making it perfectly safe. As compared to 682, 106, etc etc. It's all about how hard it is to contain, what risks are posed during containment, and if it's capable and or willing to breach

The supplemental story with it is really creepy too! Two FBI agents manage to show Ronald Regan the tape and he starts mouthing along to it. The agents then get caught trying to steal amnestics. It helps that this one is a lot more grounded than most other ones. Like, I can appreciate a good doomsday scenario once in a while, but SCP has like… 500 of them now. It gets draining after a while. This one, despite how „mundane“ it seems, is actually rather refreshing
@Dr.Oofers
@Dr.Oofers 9 ай бұрын
@@KeDe1606 Back then, most SCPs delved into the “weird” and “unsettling” factor. That’s what made SCP so fascinating; you had your world-ending SCPs, but it's like it could end the world in a weird or unsettling way and not some generic "doomsday" scenario (there's a reason "When Day Breaks" is popular when it comes to this). Like, there was one SCP that’s just a self-multiplying cake, and it actually posed a serious threat to the world since it’d drown/suffocate the world in cake. One SCP (not sure what object it is) is literally indestructible and only exists to annoy and anger you. It straight up cannot do anything but just sit there and verbally insult you. People got creative in making weird stuff, and I love it. I just hope more SCP authors delve into that more.

@@Dr.Oofers There's also a sea creature that will cause intense hydrophobia due to it appearing in _any_ body of water you see. At this point, you are infected, and will be transported to the ocean if you submerge yourself in any body of water, be it a bathtub or a public pool. As time goes by, this transportation will only get more relentless. You will be able to fall into the ocean through a puddle on the street, or through the puddle in your own shower. You cannot have this massive entity described to you in any way. Not verbally, through an audio or video recording, a picture, a drawing made by a little child, or even something as simple as seeing someone else fall through a puddle. Nothing, or you will suffer this fate. This is *SCP-1128.* It is a prime example of an infohazard. In the SCP world, I probably have killed us, the creator of the video, and a LOT of commenters.

I have seen the tape apparently. At one point in the broadcast Reagans body is perfectly segmented along the vertical plain, like he was sliced down the middle with a very sharp blade and you can see everything from his muscles moving , the heart pumping , blood flowing through valves and arteries, a perfect cross section segmentation . He appears unfazed by this bizarre spectacle.

The SCP foundation is not for the most of people. We Secure Contain and Protect. I, myself have discovered a new anomaly. Found in Newcastle, Oklahoma. In the neighborhood of Wyndemere. Subjects put into the neighborhood have not been able to leave. The boundaries are similar to that of a video game. I as being apart of the ***** MTF BRANCH, we saw horrific images inside of the house where this activity occurred. The house was built on top of an old cult site. This is suspect of being the source of the activity. The investigation is ongoing, and we as the Mobile Task Force will Secure, Contain, And Protect.

Thank you so much for making this! When I made the Scp-1981 video, the author of it, Digiwizzard, reached out to tell me how much they enjoyed my project. I asked them about the theory I had on Scp-1981, basically trying to parse the true explanation behind what it is, which I was speculating was a consciousness that spontaneously came into existence onto the recording on the tape, and was using deimatic behavior i.e. a startle display , bluffing behavior, instead of predatory violence to defend itself from the entire universe, which it had not yet been able to come to an understanding of. Eventually it realized it's stuck on an analog tape that will eventually and decay until the consciousness disappears with the recording, and everything it's done since has been calculated maneuvering to get itself in a pristine preservation environment where it will be looked after in stable temperatures and low moisture storage and no longer even played. This was I think justly shot down, as this is what Digiwizzard eloquently put: "Your theory is definitely very well thought out but I don't really subscribe to it myself. My problem with it, is that it's very explicit in defining and explaining what SCP-1981 is and that kind of neuters it. It's a bit like explaining a joke. A joke is at it's funniest when you can make the implicit and unexpected connection in your head. If you don't "get" a joke and someone explains to you why it's funny, it loses its power. You might be able to rationally understand why it's funny, but it's not as funny as if you implicitly got the joke from the start. This is because part of humour is being able to see those implicit glimpses of a larger whole and putting those pieces together in unexpected and hilarious ways. When you're explicit about it and pull back the curtain then something is inevitably lost. You are able to dismantle and take it apart, to dissect it. And by dissecting it, you are able to understand how the thing worked when it was alive. But in the process you needed to kill the thing to take it apart. It renders something living into something lifeless, static, dead, and gives you power over it. I feel the same is true for fear. Admittedly, I haven't really paid attention to SCP's for a long time now, but what makes a good SCP for me is that it attempts to dissect the unknowable and fails. A spider, or a volcano, or a car crash, can all be dangerous and life threatening. But they aren't really scary in the same way an SCP can be, because we understand the origins and processes that govern Volcanos and Car Crashes and how they come to exist. SCP's don't even exist, but they're frightening because of what they represent. They represent an epistemic gap. It represents the brightest minds humanity has to offer using the best dissection techniques possible on something we don't understand, and then watching that dissected thing rise off the table and strangle them. It's about attempting to understand and categorize that which actively resists being defined or understood. It's about reaching the very limits of human understanding, and having to accept that we don't understand this thing because we either don't have the data, or the tools to understand it. Or even more worryingly, that we just can't understand it, and will be incapable of ever understanding it, because of what we are, in the same way an ant or a blade of grass will never understand what a volcano or a meteor strike is. It's the implicit anxiety of not knowing, of facing something that is utterly unknowable, that makes SCP's feel dangerous and disturbing and alive. So if you know exactly how SCP-1981 functions and everything about how it came to be and why it came to be, you don't have to worry about it anymore. It's a problem that's "Solved". Maybe it poses a threat, but it's a threat you can understand and plan for and anticipate. For me, SCP-1981-1 isn't trapped in the tape. It's something that actively resists observation and categorization. It knows it's being observed and tells us this. And the fact that it's no longer on the tape shows how little control we have over it, if we had any control at all. Similarly, SCP-1981 is just a betamax tape. And the fact that it's just a betamax tape is part of what makes it so disturbing. Physically, there's nothing that distinguishes this tape from millions of other Betamax tapes. It didn't appear ex-nihilo. It was manufactured in a facility in Japan with thousands of other tapes in the Autumn of 1980. After that point, all we know is that someone did something to the tape that caused it to break reality. And we don't know what that is or who did it. All we can infer is that whoever did do it was interested in the betamax format, and for whatever reason elected to misspell "Reagan" on a haunted snuff tape of the president being mutilated. This is the only clue we have to their identity. It could have been a mistake because they were careless with their spelling, or it could have been deliberate for a reason we don't understand."

You guys know that there's more to this SCP? At some point after Reagan's presidency he was told that the foundation had discovered an SCP based around him. He was curious and decided to go to the facility and asked to see the tape. The foundation was hesitant of course and gave Reagan a lot of warnings about the nature of the SCP and told him he would be allowed to take mind wiping chemicals so he could forget about them afterwards but he decided against it. So the foundation sat him down and played the tape. As the tape played Reagan was visibly uncomfortable and would squirm in his seat as the tape played, but then suddenly he leaned in and started paying closer attention. It was then that he started mouthing the words that the tape Reagan was saying as if he remembered saying them before. After the tape ended he got up and left after thanking the foundation for letting him see it. A couple months later a break in at an SCP storage facility took place in which 2 secret service members were seen stealing boxes of those memory wiping chemicals. The foundation tracked them down to Reagans house where they saw that Reagan had suddenly been driven to some sort of madness. The secret service members held Reagan down and started injecting him with the chemicals. Soon enough Reagan stopped moving and the some foundation members burst in and realized that Reagan quickly needed medical attention. The madness was driven away but Reagan's mind was left empty due to the overabundant use of memory wipes. The SCP foundation created a cover story about Reagan being diagnosed with Dementia and the secret service agents were given a small amount of amnestics to forget about the experience.
@scaper8

"Dr. Robinson's Statement," right? Great addition to the story. (And Reagan seemed able to gleem some future knowledge from it. The lawyer from Chicago, for example.) There's also "Cut Up While Thinking." It takes place from the point of view of a dementia-riddled Reagan "remembering" the versions on the tape. It seems to suggest that his deteriorating mental state is related in some way to the tape. It takes part of his mind when it makes new versions or it connects his mind to the alternate realities that the tape shows, or its combining him/his mind/our reality with those alternate realities or something else. It leave it up to us to decide. But they are connected. I'd highly recommend both to anyone who likes SCP-1981 in general.
