Yep, basically this. The police in Japan are notoriously incompetent and will heavily resist investigating crimes unless they are very sure to get a conviction. People always note Japans "amazing" conviction rate and "low crime", this is a bit of a falsehood because the high conviction rate is manufactured by only pursuing cases that are very likely to succeed. All the others, especially those involving sexual crimes and missing persons, tend to get tossed to the wayside.

What a strange case... I find it hard to believe that foul play was involved but it really is odd that the police did not act on an active tip for six years. Especially since searching every river and creak would be too much space to cover, wouldn't getting a specific location make it far easier to just look there? If there hadn't been anything to be found there, surely it would have been a good way to discredit unreliable witnesses.

There was a rash of cases around that time and later in Japan of girls causing accidents in their cars (sometimes killing pedestrians) from wearing extremely thick heels on their shoes hitting the wrong pedals on their car. It definitely looks like they panicked and accidentally hit the accelerator. The three witnesses were probably larking and spooked the girls. Japanese people are generally very law abiding but like anyone will eschew any chance of getting in trouble, especially with the Japanese police who are notorious for extracting "confessions" where they will.

So easy to speculate with things like this but my gut instinct is possibly the witnesses were family/friends of the police and that the police knew more than they were letting on from the start. Perhaps they waited to long because they knew they needed that length of time to be absolutely certain decomposition couldn't give anything away. What a sad story though :( beautifully told however and brilliantly edited as always.

If the witnesses did it and the cops were in bed with them too, then do tell why they even bothered to come forward?? Nothing about what you're suggesting makes sense. It was just an accident. The cops ignoring new witnesses tip from a years-old case isn't that odd. If the case is so old that the missing are presumed dead then redirecting resources and manpower from ongoing crimes and missing persons cases is costly and irresponsible. The tip is going to be put on the shelf, and the cops will come to it once after dealing with other cases. It's simply bad luck it took so long.

I don’t think the 3 witnesses came forward more than a decade later because their “conscience” kicked in. Japan has very short statues of limitations so even if a suspect involved in manslaughter or murder was found after X amount of years- if it’s past the date, they cannot be prosecuted at all. They can’t be touched. And yes, even murder has a statue of limitation, I believe it’s 25 years?

I understand the human inclination to protect yourself, so I don't blame the witnesses as much (especially considering Japan's conviction rate is 99%) but they and the police failed the families of these two girls. The police could have so easily followed up on the tip once they did come forward, as they provided the *exact* point of entry into the water. It would not have been a waste of resources to investigate, even if they hadn't found anything. It would at least have narrowed the possible pool of tips. It's so upsetting that they made these families wait for closure.

Great channel, just found your stuff on /r/documentaries on reddit, you got yourself another subscriber! I definitely sympathize with the witnesses who didn't come forwards - I have a friend who's in prison right now because he came forwards as a witness to a murder, he was literally on his way to meet me when he saw it, and he ended up charged for it even though he was literally on the phone with me when he was supposedly killing a woman. I spent a lot of time in court for that one, and he still got convicted, so it's entirely reasonable to just want to keep your mouth shut.

This behavior is actually totally in keeping with police in Japan. They're utterly incompetent. We made them that way on purpose when we occupied them. EDIT: Doesn't Japan still have a statue of limitations on murder? Might have done away with that by now. Yeah, the Japanese police are worse than even the Aussie police, because the Japanese police are there to keep things orderly, not investigate crimes. They can do some things well, but every case I've seen of an investigation run by their various agencies has left me with a very poor opinion of them.
@kspen6110

Something I don't understand is if these 3 "witnesses" were just casually walking up to the car to talk to the girls and then the car falls in reverse into the water, why not jump in to try and save them? Why not go somewhere and call for help? Perhaps those 3 had done something earlier to scare the girls and they parked in the lot to "hide". Then they found them and continued bothering them. I wonder if the car damage was inspected to see if the story made sense going in backward or if the gear shift was still in reverse. I'm with the one girl's father as far as the poorly done investigation. I think the police consider it a done deal accident and won't investigate anything else.

Does Japan have a statute of limitations on murder? I thought I read something similar recently. Maybe that's why the witnesses waited. Edit: I'm not saying I think they did anything wrong, but it's not like the police don't sometimes find "evidence" to fit a theory against an innocent person.

There's nothing strange on police behaviour. - The case was dead by the time the witnesses came out. Probably the people that lead the case in 1996 were retired by then. That means new guys have to check out the info and decide wether to make a move or not. - The case was by then an urban legend. Any famous case usually gets their shares of crazy people lying to police in order to "be a part of it". False, unreliable tips are not that uncommon. - Searching stuff in water is expensive. They already did that back in 1996 and found nothing. Why would their superiors authorize such a search for a witnesses tip that came 18 years later? Let's also not forget that the nature of the witnesses claims was weird/cague/absurd, it's not a common way to die. I suspect the police interviewed them a lot, trying to find inconsistencies in their stories, trying to check if they were lying. They probably made a background check of everyone of them until finally deciding to actually take the tip seriously.

I think the cops were just lazy and didnt care. I dont understand why this is a common problem in Japan, especially back in the day, but far too often cops would join the forces to just grab a paycheck and do as little as possible. Say what you want about American cops, but if a couple of teenagers were driving around at night around bodies of water and suddenly went missing, you better believe theyd be searching the water.

Another amazing video. What I don’t get is if the car was covered in a blue sheet how did the sheet get there?
@Sanakudou
@Sanakudou 2 жыл бұрын
That’s probably the most suspicious part about it, even the fact it was blue could be intentional in trying to obscure the car in the water from view. I can definitely see a person making a mistake and reversing into the water, I remember my mom once accidentally wrecking the car by accelerating instead of reversing when trying to get out of a parking spot, the front of the car slammed into a pole (the ones designed to protect pedestrians from that exact mistake!) But the witnesses not calling police and/or an ambulance in hopes they could be pulled out and resuscitated is what’s truly odd regarding the official story. Even if they caused it via pranking/spooking them, surely you’d be more afraid of the trouble you’d get in for not having tried to help. I guess without mobile phones they’d have had to try and reach a phone and whether a pay phone or house was nearby is hard to know. Still, it’s a really weird response for three different people to decide to stay silent ALL that time and come forward together in unison like that. It’s a shame we’ll never know if foul play was involved in this case and not even the families get access to the witnesses to maybe get some sort of closure.

If their car vanished with them never to be seen again either, then I would bet my life those poor girls are in a body of water along with their car somewhere on the route they took. 9 times out of 10 when people vanish along with their car it is because both themselves and the car are in a body of water having had an accident on the road which turned out to be their last journey. There are multiple channels on this platform that specialize in finding just such missing people. These channels have a very high success rate!! Because of this I believe that is what happened to them. P.S. Well obviously I left the comment before I finished watching the video and as it turned out I was absolutely correct in what happened to those poor girls! Anytime someone vanishes along with their vehicle the first thing that should be investigated is bodies of water! 🤷🏼‍♀️

It was probably an accident. They were jumpy and adrenaline-filled from a night of kimodameshi. A group of people approach their car, it's late at night, the car's already in reverse (people usually back into parking spots in Japan), and in a haste to get away, drives into the lake. Even if the 3 witnesses called for help they probably wouldn't have had a chance. The driver was 19, so only 1 year's experience of driving... yeah. Accident. edit: Also, as to why they were there when they probably should've been at the building, maybe the whole trip was an excuse for a makeout session. that could be another reason why they were frightened by a group of people approaching them

I mean absolutely no disrespect by this, but it seems like a suicide pact to me, personally. In the west, we tend to think of suicide as a very private, isolated thing, but as far as I understand it's not that uncommon in Japan to want company when you leave this life. There are even websites to find strangers to do this act with, or there used to be at least. I also understand that it is more common for the person(s) taking their life to not do so where they can easily be found, especially by family. I imagine this has to do with the immense respect for their elders, and especially the shame they believe they may bring their family. They may believe it would be socially better for their family if they just disappeared. I think this explains why the girls sent the page that they'd arrived, but why didn't stay or send a page that they'd changed their minds and were turning around. I think they wanted the search to look in the wrong place. As far as I can tell, there was no real reason for them to be parked backward, facing away from the ocean, at night, (so not for the view) on a pier. To me, this is just a super sad story of some girls who probably needed some help and just didn't or couldn't get it in time. I kind of hope I'm wrong and it was a freak accident, as at least then it was just a twist of fate that couldn't be foreseen. Either way it's a tragedy.

Please don’t use repugnant horror music. This is crime mystery not slasher genre. Otherwise well told and interesting story. Nice one 👌✌️
