I remember the first time I saw the name of the final island mentioned, it was spelled Raftel, which looking back mightve just been a phonetic translation that didnt know how it was actually supposed to be spelled, but I much prefer the idea that that is just what the rest of the One Piece world knows it by, that rather than the manga translator getting this one name wrong, thats just what came out of the game of telephone that the world played with any rumors surrounding Roger and his journey. Idk which one is the actual truth, but I wanna believe its the latter.

based on what I've seen people say prior to the movie it was a made up word "rafuteru" in japanese and oda never gave the proper english translation until the movie and later in the manga. so translator just used phonetics. he's done before where he didn't give the proper translation until way later like with mary geoise. it mostly translated as marijoa or mariejois until the reverie. however, his editors were told the meaning of raftel way before so it wasn't an accident.

But I like the idea that, by only ever hearing the name of the island passed down through rumour, the rest of the One Piece world isnt aware of that, and only knows it by the name Raftel, while oblivious to its true meaning. This would both be a cool bit of worldbuilding, and would explain why thats what it was referred to before now without having to retcon or blame it on a poor translation, by essentially saying its a poor translation in-universe.
