I hadn't caught on to this "dyeing" metaphor as containing a coercive element. Nice catch. I find it interesting that the show keeps the character of Sekitani Jun so opaque throughout the series -- they don't even show his face. Here, it seems to serve the purpose of allowing the characters to impose a narrative and personality on Sekitani Jun in the theories they come up with. But I wonder if it doesn't also allow the viewer to make some sort of mental identification between Houtarou and Jun.

The child version of chitanda digging many holes represented to me how she is hard working and persistent but bad at knowing where to start and unable to dig deep for a conclusion.

I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but in the 5th novel (or 6th, I'm not sure which since I read all the novels in one go), we find out the reason why Houtarou started following his motto. There's a beautiful little story about what his sister told him when he first decided to follow the grey life. It was truly moving. I would recommend everyone to read the novel. Edit- also we find a deeper similarity between sekitani and oreki

At ep 2, when they first meet the librarian. After she told them that the anthologies are not in the library, she walk away towards the camera and her name tag comes into view which indicates one of the clue to her being the author of the second anthologies. That if only u can read japanese.

Yeah, Houtarou also mentioned it when correcting his theory since how the characters used in her name is not common in the current time and age.

I hadn't ever consider the duality of the two meanings of Hyouka. I was always kind of shocked by the "I scream" part, but never really thought that the "Ice Cream" had also a meaning in a thematic sense. This videos are freaking awesome, and I really thank you for making them. Hyouka has been one of my favorite animes since I watched it... but, as I realize most of the times I watch video essays or read essays on the net, I tend to like stuff, but have problems understanding why do I like them so much. There's very few analysis in regards to Hyouka to be found on the internet, so it's very pleasant to have someone to tell me why is it this show affected me so deeply. Lately, I've been finding myself getting this little details when I watch media, and giving a more piercing and critic look at everything I consume. As I haven't seen Hyouka in a long time, maybe is time for me to revisit it, and look at it a little bit more closely. The reason why I've started to be more aware of the little details that make media great is people like you, so thanks again. Awesome video :)

Once again, great video and analysis! Good editing, smooth voice and a brilliant script, all coming together in one video. Honestly, I love love Hyouka so I pretty much love almost every video about it. But the fact it is done by you makes it even greater! I usually have something to add afterwards, but this time I feel you really covered all the bases! Nice work and I hope to see your next Hyouka video :) P.S. Congratz for 1K subs, your hard work is clearly garnering attention and I hope you continue growing :)

I like to read Oreki's observation in ep2 that he can't be like the other three as that of an introvert. A common distinction drawn between introverts and extroverts is that socializing expends energy for the former, an idea that fits with Oreki's obsession with energy conservation. Oreki can't do what Chitanda, Mayaka, and Satoshi can do so effortlessly. I'm not inclined to take without reservation what Satoshi says during the bike ride to Chitanda's house in ep4. The shocking pink he so readily accepts is an unnatural color; it's one likely to be dyed. And it's odd that he tries to reassure Oreki that being gray is OK. So I'm not willing to say Satoshi is "tired" of this topic, just that he's bothered by it. I don't think the distinction you try to make between the silk spider club mystery in ep1 and Oreki's theory about Sekitani Jun in ep4 is correct. Satoshi persuasively argues at the end of ep1 that Oreki went beyond his motto in creating the silk spider mystery, and Oreki's forceful response that he didn't want to reject Chitanda is essentially an admission of that.

Yes, I agree that he's more bothered than bored after finishing the anime... he calls himself shocking pink in reference to his view of himself in the valentine's day mystery imo

Another fantastic analysis! You covered a lot in video ,but at no point did it seem boring or overwhelming, rather it fit together really nicely. Only one thing , I might be just imagining it ,but setting aside scenes and general direction of the episodes it seemed to me like you were restricting yourself in few parts of analysis. Like you didn't want to overextend or go to in depth. if you are worried that the audience might not like it or that the videos will be too long ,I think you a worrying over nothing. I think there are a lot of people who like longer and more in-depth videos. I would also like to hear more of your personal thoughts, because you never know if some scenes have multiple meanings that are not so apparent because the themes that are already set overshadow them. Well that's just my suggestion since it could be that I am only imagining it ,but to sum up you don't have to hold back if you are doing it. You are more experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to these topics so I can hear a lot of different opinions and learn. So feel free to do analysis as you like without holding back.

Yasashisa no Riyuu (OP1) is definitely my preference of the two - I think it captures the spirit of the show a lot more and it's the one that comes to mind when I think of Hyouka. I am the protagonist of this show xD I hate how so many shows are about cynical nihilists learning to care about this (utterly meaningless) world and the (pointless) people within it.... why can't we have shows about nihilists converting idealistic children to the truth that life is pointless and they might as well give up and die? If i put on my tin foil hat, I think the big companies that make anime are trying to brainwash audiences into caring about pointless stuff like relationships, so they'll become karoshi artillerymen and work themselves to death for the profit of their corporate overlords. Not that it matters if people do that ("you got nothing better to do") but why put in the effort to do it if it doesn't matter :P 5:20 That she's worked so hard on something meaningless should make him laugh at how pathetic she is, to not know how pointless all her efforts are. Rose colored glasses make you a fool and stop you seeing the truth, i'm glad the story about the uncle shows this :p but i guess the protagonist continues down the foolish path even knowing it's folly, because anime is a corporate product trying to turn us into worker drones...
@vanthursday5 жыл бұрын
It looks like you didnt even watch the show and just start talking about stupid things like corporations and worker drones like how is that related to this story at all. You completely missed the point.. The students were protesting that they didnt have enough days for their school festival so they protested to school board of the school to extend the days but it turned violent and they accidentally burned one of the buildings down. Chitanda worked hard to find out what her Uncle told her when she was young because she remembered that it made her cry and because her uncle went missing after that. They found out that her Uncle had been carrying the burden of everyone because the other students didnt want to take responsibility on what happened. Because deep down he regret taking the responsibilities and get kicked out of the school. He lost his rose colored life and was marked as a bad student for the rest of his life. In the end she was happy that they finally solved the mystery because in the end the school actually gave them more days for the festival and the school finally found out what really happened and what he felt. Houtaro compared himself to Chitanda's uncle and he said he doesnt want to be like that. Full of regret and all gray. You have to live your life to the fullest but you just have to remember there are ups and downs in life
@ceagst5 жыл бұрын
@@vanthursday He probably just wanted to look redpilled by showing his superior outlook on life saying relationships are pointless, Chitanda's efforts were meaningless and people that care about their friends and try to make the most out of their good moments are fools. Also sprinkling some weird conspiracy shit on top of that.
