Funny thing, and I know I'm not the only one, ever since discovering this podcast it's become part of my wind-down routine at night. I've always needed that routine. I've also long been in the habit of reciting certain prayers as I fall asleep. Currently it's the Scriptural Rosary, played on a podcast. So I fall asleep recollecting the mysteries of our redemption. On a weird or creepy note, I was awakened suddenly by loud noises at 3AM every night for years. When I got up to investigate, there was no sign of anyone outside or inside who could have made those noises. The noises always stopped when I got up. It went on for many years, at least a decade. Then I came across a comment from someone who suggested praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3AM for all the people who were awakened at that hour. There is a thought that it's "the devil's hour," but, the commenter wrote, "If it's 3AM where you are, it's 3PM on the other side of the world, so you can join your prayer to theirs." So I took that suggestion to heart, and if any noises woke me at that hour, I didn't bother investigating. Instead, I picked up my rosary beads and began praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet in union with those praying on the other side of the world. And wouldn't you know it? Those 3AM noises _stopped_ ! It wasn't immediate, but it wasn't long. It was only then that I considered that it may have been a spiritual attack. If so, it's possible that God was allowing it so that I would pray at that hour. Another helpful practice I heard from Dr. Charles Stanley, who's not Catholic, is to invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you at that time, when there are no distractions. I'm not in the habit of doing that, only because I don't think of it until the next morning. I'll have to ask my Guardian Angel to remind me to do that if I awaken enough to where I have difficulty falling back to sleep.

A weighted blanket! I've long thought the lead blanket you wear at the dentist for X-rays was just the ticket. I was right!

I LOVE that heavy blanket they put on you for x-rays! I always want to tell them to just take their time with the x-ray or leave it on me for all the dental work. I did buy a weighted blanket and enjoyed it but after awhile I found I didn't change position as much while asleep and I'd get muscle cramps or just wake up feeling terribly hot due to the material of my mattress holding body heat.

For any teenagers who have to do things in their bedroom like homework because they don't have other space, having a loft bed is super helpful when all you do there is sleep, because when you climb up there your brain just thinks wow it's time to sleep

This is easily one of the best science episodes you've aired to date! The two phases of sleep thing is really interesting. I might have to read the book you recommended about that. It makes sense that our sleep patterns would have evolved very differently from how we tend to sleep today. I've always felt the 8-hour workday was a bit unnatural. Necessary for much of the modern world, perhaps, but stressful and not really healthy for us. I sleep with an eye mask on and have found it really helpful. My husband listens to audiobooks every night; I only listen to podcasts when I need distraction from my own thoughts, but it does seem to help relax me. When you guys do the future episode on dreams, I'm curious if you are going to look into the various claims that many Muslims are being led to convert to Christianity through dreams. I haven't really researched it, but my sister has been interested in some of their stories and wondered what you guys might make of it all.

Generally, the only time I get really angry is when I'm tired. having children waking up at all hours of the night for different reasons, be that sleeping rhythm or a new tooth popping out is the most trying times for me and my family, ruining not only the nights but also the day.(Thank God that's the "most trying") I really like this episode, my wife and I put our son to sleep by 7 to have time to ourselves and were planning on doing this indefinitely with him and his future siblings but after hearing about how teens sleep cycles change we're taking that into account. We're unschooling so we can be flexible, Looking forward to you talking about sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming. I experience both and will post some more about my experience with them when the episodes come out!

Thank you Jimmy and Dom for your awesome work on these programs..

I can also stay awake long hours upto 36 at a stretch without feeling sleep deprived, Though have not tried it since a couple of years and do it only based on need.

In my own case, I have had bouts of not being able to sleep very much, for no known reason. One way I tackle it though, is I just lie in bed hoping I will get bored and fall asleep. Even if that don't occur, I just keep lying there for hours. IOW, I may be stretching what was a two hour sleep to at least six hours. What this does is rest your body, and maybe your mind some, but at least when you wake up sleep deprived, your body has in effect slept, whereas your mind will still be sluggish. It's actually rather amazing this sort of sleep is so restful for the body. and the idea is that if your mind won't sleep, you can at least got through normal body sleeping. Actually, I think in some cases, the body comes off better like this, because since you are awake, you have no hesitancy for turning over, and will tend to be on your back more, which is often as very relaxing position for the body, over say being on your side for hours. Every time I have tried this, I definitely end up feeling much better overall than if I had got more things done and got completely out of bed after two hours, and just not sleep again till the next bedtime.

This episode explains a lot. I think that a lot of the time I am only sleeping my first sleep phase. I cannot always get back to sleep for the second phase. I do sometimes nap in the afternoon when I can, but many times that's not an option. Unfortunately, I think it would be difficult to make many of the changes that would help me because of other obligations that I have. I do have a question: How likely is it that sleep deprivation is the cause of depression rather than depression being the cause of sleep deprivation? It's hard to know for certain, of course, but in my personal case it feels like depression is more the cause and sleep deprivation is the effect because my mind running through whatever anxieties are bothering me is often the reason it's difficult to get back to sleep.

I have the same problem. Jimmy said he listens to audiobooks to keep his mind from going in circles on the same track. I found audiobooks help me, too, but lately I'm off them because I find listening to them at night makes me absent-minded during the day. So now I'm reading my Kindle - the light is soft. Reading the Bible and then commentaries like Father Groeschel really helps. Also, the old book, "The Power of Positive Thinking" really helps me remember to fight the negative thought habit!

Another nice episode. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I have a mental technique of 'writing' out the same scene or scenes from a fake history book from an alternate reality where Bonapartist France (and allies) are at war with Russia over religious liberty in Belarus. Specifically the climatic Battle of Moscow. It doesn't have to be something that obscure, of course, but a fixed mental literary exercise might be helpful. Eventually, you convince your body and brain that it works, and zzz will return.
