it is not fair to call him a bad apple, but it is also not accurate to portray him as a harmless, purely innocent child with a heart of gold. he threatened his mother, his teachers, threatening to murder his teachers and his family members speaks to, yes, a failure on behalf of his parents, but at some point one must take responsibility. He abused his mother, too, and as long as we excuse these faults and assume he was some perfect kid, we set false expectations and, most importantly, we lie. He may not have been a bad apple, and he had plenty of time to grow up and make so much of his life. We don't have to be judgmental, but we have to be honest. If my 14 year old son said / did the things this kid has done, I'd be extremely worried.
@WakeyWakeyEggsandBakey
@WakeyWakeyEggsandBakey 2 жыл бұрын
@@Brandon-a-writer the point is that he behaved that way because of the neglect and abuse he'd suffered. If he had experienced loving support and boundaries he wouldn't have behaved in those extreme ways. Children who have loving, supportive and present parents don't behave like that. It isn't that difficult to understand. The cheek of a mother calling her son a bad apple when she is the one who made him who he is, is extremely galling.

@Brandon-a-writer
@Brandon-a-writer 2 жыл бұрын
@@melodyj2049 At some point you have to allow for personal responsibility. It's not universal that bad behavior in a child is the result of bad parenting. You're maintaining a world view in which anyone who commits crimes or is abusive is excused because of their upbringing. People from terrible upbringings can be good people, and people from great upbringing can be terrible people. It seems like you are dismissing at all costs personal responsibility for someone who is at an age where they are capable of making personal decisions. It's bullshit, and i don't care how many people agree with you. The more we excuse this behavior because the parents were negative influences, the more we make it okay for this kind of behavior. At what point does it stop? A 20 year old man commits murder, but since he had a bad childhood, he has no personal responsibility? People make their own decisions, and they are products of their own environments. I bounced around from one orphanage to another, grew up being abused by foster families and was shipped from one home to another. But you know what I didn't do? Fucking abuse anyone, because I was able to make my own decisions and I should be evaluated by my own choices. Stop excusing horrid behavior because of this BS justification. He's not 5. He's a teenager. At some point you have to take responsibility for your own actions, and if you can't do that, you never will. And this is a dangerous precedent. You may continue to dismiss dangerous and abusive behavior because of a teenager's environments, and continue to dismiss personal responsibility, it will not make it right regardless of how many "thumbs up" you get. You're excusing horrible behavior on both ends and excoriating personal responsibility. At 13 did you not know it was wrong to beat your mother? At 13 did you not know it was wrong to attack your teachers? No? Are your parents to blame for you beating your teachers? gtfo

As for the mother and brother Jason, I also believe like many others that they knew it wasn't Nicholas because they knew what really happened when he "disappeared". The mom and brother 100% made him disappear. I live close to San Antonio and have followed this story for years. The fact that his brother wouldn’t come see him when he arrived and only told him “good luck” when he spoke to him the first time was such a big sign imo. Also, the mom not wanting him to live with her. Come on. Edit: I also think them waiting 3 days to report him missing was to cover up whatever truly happened to him.

I grew up a lot like Nicholas and it would have been AT LEAST 3-5 days of not hearing from me, that my family would start to get concerned and even then they may not have reported me at all. Even, at 13. I did what I thought was best and they didn’t question it. My older sister also went missing in Arizona and when she got back I didn’t go see her because I was a recovered drug addict and I felt she would make me spin out again. Not saying for sure they did nothing, but dysfunctional families don’t live the same as functional ones.

So keep doing what you do. It's got to be a TON of work. Your channel AND Crime Weekly AND being a great mother and wife. Don't know how you do it, but thank you so much for doing it just like you do it! EDIT-For clarification for those that need it. I'm not saying Stephanie has ever put out an half assed video. My comment was speaking to what she said at the end of her video about sometimes feeling good and sometimes not as much so. I was just commenting that it's okay (preferable), that she does what she feels up to when she feels up to it. Stephanie is my FAVORITE KZbin creator, I'm a Patreon and I love and support her always. @@valerieetter5013 well, yes, lol that's exactly my point. They knew it wasn't Nicholas because it couldn't possibly be Nicholas - they knew it wasn't Nicolas because he was dead. Most likely it was Jason who had killed Nicolas and the mother protected him and helped cover it up. Of course, the imposter would've been a blessing for them because it would mean no one could suspect a murder had happened. However, the mother obviously wanted the convenience of everyone thinking Nicholas was alive and well, but she didn't want anything to do with him, she wouldn't let him live with her, which is strange if she really believed it was the real Nicholas. But she didn't believe it was Nicolas and neither did Jason. I think maybe the sister was just so happy that her brother had been found that she saw what she wanted to see, and told herself the imposter was truly her brother. I don't think she knew the truth about what had happened to Nicholas at the hands of Jason. It's a shame that nothing came of the murder investigation that the imposter initiated and no one was arrested for Nicholas' murder. If an arrest has been made, there would've been a very positive outcome to the situation of an imposter turning up which likely would've given him a much needed positive boost, the feeling that for one his actions had helped someone - instead of the usual awful things he'd experienced. Maybe it would've given his life a sense of meaning that he'd never experienced previously. But I think the person who took Nicholas's life also took their own life, whether by accident or on purpose, but definitely he'd relapsed because of the stress of the murder investigation that had begun after 3 long years of him carrying the knowledge that he killed his own brother. Also the very presence of the imposter would've caused him major stress and guilt on a daily basis. I'm sure he would've been extremely paranoid as well, imagining that the imposter was an undercover police officer or someone who knew what he'd done to Nicholas and who was trying to make him confess. He probably felt like Nicholas's ghost was trying to bring his killer to justice. It would've caused him extreme paranoia and would've felt like a huge mind game. I think that's why he relapsed and ended up overdosing. Either way, it's clear Nicolas is dead and it's very sad that at age 13, he was given so little regard that nobody bothered to report him missing for three whole days. Even his own mother didn't bother. But yet... if there was a conspiracy of silence between Jason and his mother to keep Nicholas's murder quiet, it stands to reason that they would leave it as long as possible before reporting him missing. I'm not one to judge but his mother's parenting leaves a lot to be desired. She didn't give a single crap about Nicolas and she probably didn't even notice he was gone for a couple of days. She's disgusting. Rest in peace Nicolas. 🙏 ♥

I'm really wondering about the half brother... Nicholas goes missing after calling the half brother for a ride. The half brother claims he told Nicholas to walk. After Nicholas' disappearance, the half brother then has a major change in behavior, going into rehab and staying there for the next 3 years as a counselor. When "Nicholas" shows back up, the half brother is standoffish and seems to want nothing to do with him, sees him the one time, then never again. The timing could be coincidence, and the way he acted towards "Nicholas" could just indicate he has a functioning BS detector... Or, it could indicate that he definitely knew it wasn't possible for this guy to be Nicholas, because he had a reason to know why it couldn't be him.

I'm only 15 minutes in, and it's rather strange to hear how Nicholas was at 13 years old and instinctively think "kid had it rough / had some issues" -then remember that I was pretty much the same at his age (minus the tattoos lol). The fact you pointed out he had ADHD reassures me that my diagnosis of it, given to me when I was already in my 30s, is spot on and was overlooked growing up.. with my parents and teachers thinking I was a rebellious teen with no future. I got in trouble for smoking and hung out with the kids doing drugs, started experimenting myself at 14, skipped SO much school (only to hang out in a nearby abandoned house and read books lol), and got put in these classes for the 'delinquents' to guide us towards choosing careers. Noone asked if I was okay or how I felt. Looking back, I was just bored by everything. I'd miss most of my chemistry classes, then turn up for an exam and ace it somehow, etc. Funnily enough my drug experimentation included speed and I took it at school. My mates were high as kites but I found myself focusing on the class and not have my mind wander off like it usually would. So I self medicated, stopped skipping classes, and graduated 2nd in my year and scoring 98% in the state for university entry. Went on to an amazing career in medicine. I wish I could also work with kids somehow.. within the educational system. Revolutionise it a bit... implement ways of supporting ALL kids so they aren't labelled as 'good' or 'bad' and punished for misbehaving or not fitting the mold. So many kids suffer because noone bothers to try and understand what might be going on. Once you make a kid feel like they're 'bad', you're almost ensuring a self fulfilling prophecy and they will take on that identity and grow up with it without question. It's heartbreaking.

My son was in first grade when diagnosed with ADHD. He wasn't the typical "hyper" but compulsive and he would say inappropriate things without considering consequences. I researched it and found that is a symptom. After he was medicated he stopped doing that and was better at regulating his emotions. He lost his father at 4 years old and then we moved so it was rough for him. He wasn't a bad kid but they tried to label him. He got bullied but he would get in trouble and the other kids got off with warnings. Also took 3 years to get him tested for a learning disability the principal refused. Then I asked to get him on a IEP then boom the doors open he did test for having a learning disability. He's 13 now and constantly improving.

I think it’s completely understandable why Jason didn’t immediately go to meet “Nicholas” for a month or so. If he blamed himself and nearly destroyed himself from guilt that means he was also ashamed of himself for not doing something as simple as giving Nicholas a ride and all this happening because of that. I would then also assume that he believed that since he blamed himself well then of course Nicholas must blame him too, maybe even hate him, never wanting to see him again. And to spare the rest of the family from a potential fight happening nearly immediately he hung back. I bet it took that whole month for the rest of the family to convince him to come see Nicholas. Reassuring him that Nicholas didn’t hate him and wanted to see him. In fact, I’m almost positive that happened. So imagine how pissed off he must of been, how furious had to of been when finally comes and sees…. this 25-30 year old guy, who looks NOTHING like Nicholas, parading around Jason’s family claiming to the very person that Jason has nearly killed himself over. Filling him with hope and a chance to apologize to Nicholas only for it to be a cruel lie. The Cosmic equivalent of the Universe saying “Psyche! Haha!! 😂” That’s a kind of rage I bet not most people will ever feel in all their lives.

Not saying or assuming he was involved but I can’t help but either he or the mother or both knew more than they let on and were weirdly forced into this situation, regardless of what happened before. The mother had no choice but to go to the airport and pretend to greet her long lost traumatised and abused “son” even if she knew it wasn’t him. She couldn’t admit he’d got into her drugs and ODed or one of her ex partners had beaten him and gone too far or idk, all pure speculation. From the other side, if You put yourself in the brothers shoes as an adolescent, struggling with family and drugs and alcohol and your little brother who had called and asked for a trivial, short lift and he had then been abducted and experienced absolute atrocities for the past 3 years, if you blamed yourself and you’d dealt with that, assuming he was dead for most of that time until this happened.. I can perhaps understand being so trapped in a cycle of drugs and alcohol that you were too ashamed to be involved at all. Especially if this situation was true and it was the real brother returning home, all it would take is one phone call where he said “don’t ever come and see me again, what I went through was your fault” whether true or not, would be enough to make someone act like this. I’ve heard this story before and I forget where it goes.

Yes I remember the SVU episode similar to this one, it was a daughter though and the son had accidentally killed his sister when they were children and the dad helped him cover it up and buried her body and then they reported her missing and then years later a girl came pretending to be the daughter. The son and father just went along with it until the police noticed the son acting odd and eventually got the truth out of him and then the son and father were arrested. I can’t remember the name of the episode either but I actually watched it on tv just a few weeks ago. There’s so many SVU episodes that are based on real true crime cases! 💕

@@jenenenena oh yeah I remember that one too, it was a different episode I think, cause the one mentioned in my other comment the brother and sister were really young and the brother accidentally killed the girl and the dad helped cover it up. Let me google and see if I can find the episode really quick. Ok the title is Complicated it’s season 19 episode 5. But I can remember the episode you’re talking about too and they figured out she wasn’t the real girl because she attempted suicide and needed a blood transfusion and the parents were both type A so she should have been type A but the dr revealed she was type B which would be impossible if she were their real daughter and then they realize the tattoo is mirrored because she saw a picture of the real daughter. That one is season 10 episode 11 titled Stranger. When I first was trying to figure out the episodes before I googled I was trying to combine them but realized the girl from the first episode I mentioned couldn’t have had a tattoo because she was just a child when she disappeared/was killed. So I realized I was combining two episodes in my head lol I’ve watched SVU since almost the beginning and recently I went back and rewatched every episode since the beginning on Hulu. There’s sooooo many episodes that are based on real true crime stories.

This story is insane and so is the documentary. When I first saw the pic of the grown ass man pretending to be a 16 year old, I was like oh hell no. That’s CLEARLY not him. But then I thought of the family and how desperately they wanted Nicholas back, they would’ve ignored the red flags as long as it meant he was finally safe and back home….. …but then the documentary shifts and kind of implies that the family might have known from the very beginning that this wasn’t Nicholas.. because Nicholas was dead and his death was caused by one of the family members, either on accident or on purpose. Then when they were contacted by police saying they possibly have Nicolas, they seized the opportunity and that explains why they just wanted him back and would ditch interviews and would lock themselves away from the media. Such a crazy freakin story.

This story hits, LITERALLY, close to home, for me. I am a 39 year old woman, who had NEVER even heard of this story, until last week, and I don’t know why! What’s even more astounding is that Nicholas Barclay lived in the neighborhood right across the street from my childhood neighborhood that I grew up in, and the same neighborhood that I moved back to live in now, some years back. In fact, I can almost see the street he lived on, from my window. Evenmoreso, the Barclay house was right across the street from the local elementary school, that I (and I’m assuming) Nicholas attended. He was 4 years older than me. Once I watched the 60 Minutes Episode, I noticed the house and street, right away, and I promise, that I can never view that street the same, every again. The fact that this remains a cold case has me intrigued and shocked. I know this area and the development around it well. The story said that Nicholas was playing basketball in a local neighborhood. I’d like to know which one. Of course, this is the information which his brother told police, so this already makes it questionable. Who can really know if he ever played basketball that day, or not? I was 10 years old when he went missing, and I can say that there was no search done in the area, to the extent that no one was even talking about a missing boy in San Antonio, at all. The fact that 3 years later an imposter enters the story, is when this case gained notoriety, and with the movie (which I have never seen), the story gained further recognition. I agree with others who have said that amidst the details, Nicholas gets lost in it all, and that is so, so sad. It seems like the truth will never be known. I saw that his mother passed away only a few weeks ago, too.

I applaud you for keeping a straight face while talking about some of the WILD claims. Whoever thinks this 30-40 year old European man could be 16 year old Nicholas Barclay, is literally on drugs or just plain stupid. But clearly, it was a cover up by the family, so there’s that.

There's also the possibility that it's not a cover up. I mean, that man is not Nicholas 100%, but grief can do strange things to the brain. When I saw the photos you included in this video, I saw fear and sadness in his face. While he was a physically adorable boy…those pics only looked sad to me. I think his behavior was most likely a result of severe neglect and possibly abuse or abusive neglect. As far as the man pretending to be a 16 year old boy…omg!!!! The fact that his own family either believed or pretended to believe he was their disappeared family member only tells me that, best case scenario, they never actually KNEW him at all! Also, the brother….grrr. Not feeling good about that guy whatsoever.

It's a pretty sick case. There is info out there that I dug up years ago. But haven't taken the time in recent years to look at newspaper archives to find more. Edit: Alton Coleman was the first known Black serial killer (U.S. in the 1980s). He got his lover to assist him and they were both sentenced to death. As wild as his crimes were his childhood was just as awful. Not excusing his horrific crimes just fascinated with learning more about his family history (which may explain some of my grandmother's family history).

@@zombieDRAGONsunset I went through the same thing and had to really assert myself and get him into a doctors office. With the diagnoses on paper, I let the school know. It took another year and a half for anyone to tell me I needed to request a special plan (called 504 plan) here. That forces the school to have a meeting with the counselor, principal and others that are involved. It gives a bit of help and grace to accommodate him and keep the trouble as low as possible. It is ridiculously hard to get through it though. Most recently I had to call amd have him taken to the ER from an episode he had. He was violent and uncontrollable. The police officer saw it and the crisis line person heard it on the phone. The first nurse I saw gaslit me when we spoke. So demeaning and crushing. I always let the new authority figures know that he has diagnoses and is medicated. That also has seemed to help with increasing patience. Hang in there. They make it tough but you can do it. There are days that are defeating but just know that even acknowledging it and talking about it is an important step and shows you are a great parent. I have to remind myself of that too, it is much too easy to get in the despair mindset

I can't help but see this as a stereotypical view of people with addictions. Believe me when I say, parents on drugs may care A LOT about their children, but they do not have the means, the resources or the energy to do anything to express it in a constructive or protective way. Being in 12-step groups for 30 years, I see it all the time. Their pain is excruciating. Very often, there are NO resources for rehab and the person is left on their own. Very few people can "kick" without medical and practical support, and in many cases those options don't exist. It's not at all what you think. This does not apply to every case, and I wasn't there, so I can't say for sure.

What in the what?! There’s no way someone could convince me that man was 16 🤣 I’ve never heard of this case before … can’t wait for part 2!

Thank you for showing up even though it's hard for you sometimes xxx the first thing I thought is that this guy is a trafficking victim himself and just wanted a home. But I think the family either grabbed at the opportunity to bury a secret or naively went along with it, enjoying the media and social attention.

I watched this documentary years ago on Netflix. It's so insane to me that the family fell for this imposter. Maybe it was the drug use that completely fried their brains.

I think they didn't question it bc they themselves harmed Nicholas and were fine with someone pretending to be him. I strongly suspect his older brother.

I think the mom and brother did something to him. Always have. Which is why when this guy posed as him, they accepted it without any questions to keep suspicion off of them.

Once heard the theory that they knew exactly what happened to him and accepted an imposter to avoid further investigation.

The mood thing I think is 100% an adhd thing. I have had that even before my trauma and when I was diagnosed with adhd. I know this story, however you've already given me more information then I knew. Absolutely love that about you!

The Imposter is one of my all-time favorite documentaries!! Not only was the way it was told amazing and suspenseful for a documentary based on past events but the story itself is just mind-blowing and full of turns and twists. Totally recommend :)
