I totally agree! Stephanie's videos make me actually feel pain for the victims and their families. Some true crime shows gloss over the victims. Its hard to hear but we need to feel for and remember the victims. These aren't just stories...they are real life situations with real life victims.

Theres a deep innocence about this case that got destroyed that night. Four teen girls working and hanging out at a yogurt shop at their first jobs, still going to highschool and with their first 'serious' boyfriends. When I worked at Walgreens some years back, they would always leave my shift manager (at the time a 22 year old girl) and me (4”11 and then 18) to close the store by ourselves and we worked in a seedy part of town. You wouldn’t believe the things I saw.

So people like to overdo and say stuff like that after something HAS happened. Like OMG I FELT LIKE SOMETHING WAS GONNA HAPPEN!! I mean, how could they possibly know? Everything was normal and it's not like they were held hostage or something. They all acted like they were suppose to act. Also if they actually did feel something was off, what could've they done? Go bother a police and say hey something felt wrong, can you go and check? When AGAIN everything was normal and the girls were fine. That person would've looked crazy and nothing wouldn't come of it in the end. Police would've laughed it off or ignored it. Or if they went there then what? Nothing was happening that time so they would've just left. I think these folk were overreacting after the fact they heard the news. Some people just feel the need to feel special and dramatic. It's not about them but they insert themselves into the drama. What happened was terrible but shit like this happens. And remember, not even the ex police who NOTICED odd behavior of this guy DID NOTHING. And that's his job. Or was his job. He just walked out cause he found no reason to stay and check.

I couldn’t even imagine what that was like. I was really little when this happened & only heard about it from a KZbin video by That Chapter maybe a yr ago. So when I got the notification that Stephanie was covering the case I couldn’t click fast enough. I know it happened a long time ago but is it still talked about & do you know if the police are still investigating as much? Sorry so many questions just really curious. Just like the Watt’s case this case has stayed with me. I have family in Rockwall & Dallas. Like I said I couldn’t imagine what it’s been like for everybody in the community & especially the families. I really really hope so much that this case will be solved one day. @@louise8130 You know the area between Mopac, Anderson Lane, and Burnet Rd ? There used to be a mall there, the Northcross mall, with an ice skating rink. The ICBY I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt shop was closer to Mopac than Burnet Road, ON Anderson Lane, in a strip mall. That whole area is retail and commercial stuff. Of course, the shop was closed, and ICBY went out of business at some point between then and now.

As a 23 year old, I’ll be the first to say I’ve always been the “that would never happen to me” type. Until things got closer to home throughout the years (Scranton PA). Now I go do something as simple as pay for gas and I am looking everywhere. Odd behaviors, I’ll stare at bags people have, etc. it’s so terrifying. Especially being a female. There is not one place in this world that is 100% safe.

I used to work in Austin and would often get my nails done at the salon that had replaced the yogurt shop. Definitely creepy. There’s a plaque outside the salon in honor of the girls but that’s about it.

Knowing these little girls backgrounds, hearing about their lives doesn't allow us to be removed and we shouldn't be. Unfortunately, when we hear true crime stories without the background of the victims we tend to obsess about the killers and their motivation rather then focusing on the victim(s) and the impact of the crime on the friends and family. That's why I watch Stephanie, too. She doesn't allow us to forget the victim and the injustice of the crime. These little girls were so normal. So sweet and just starting life. Their parents must be tortured by this. I hope they have found some source of peace.

I found it refreshing when New Zealand wouldn't allow mention of the offender who tragically shot up a place of worship last year. Stephie handles her deep-dives with the same kind of respect and eloquence while still giving us a comprehensive scope of information regarding all involved with particular focus on victims. My first job was at a Subway, just a few years after this happened. I could never figure out why my parents seemed SO paranoid about me working nights or closing the shop, to the point that they forbade me from working the closing shift. They'd even go so far as embarrassing the crap out of me by frequently just stopping by to "check on me;" sometimes they'd even drive up and just sit parked out front, looking into the store. At the time I was humiliated, and SO insulted because I was convinced that they didn't trust me to be an honest employee! It wasn't until years later that I realized their fear stemmed from the news coverage of this case. And now, as the parent of a teen myself, I not only can totally understand their fear...I can actually see myself doing the exact same thing to MY kids if I thought they might be in danger of something like this happening to them!

This case gives me chills. I fear that me and my coworkers almost had this happen to us when I was 17. This group of young guys came into our fast food joint holding an old camera box. They gripped it like their life depended on it. One of them started ordering food but not things on the menu. I was closest to the door but blocked in. They were paying attention to the cashier. We had no back door to escape. No cameras. No manager. No adults at all. We are all sure there was a gun in the box that he started to reach into. I was trying to call 911 without being seen. Just then. The police chief walked in to get his daily sandwhich. The men shut up. And walked out and drove off before we could even tell him that we thought they were going to rob us at gunpoint. He stayed with us getting all our i formation since there were no cameras.and we were 5 kids scared to death. And sent the police after them but they disappeared. 5 hours later another fast food joint -same kind- got held up at gunpoint 2 towns over. We were so lucky. So lucky. My heart goes out to the families of the girls in this case.

It’s 17 years in November since our son was killed in an accident and it is your worst possible nightmare and unless someone is going through the same thing, others really have no idea, because having been through other family deaths nothing compares to loosing your child. Our world changed from one extreme to another, and if someone told us I life would be like it is now, I would have told them they were crazy. It has the greatest domino effect possible all the while you are still struggling with the loss of our son. It’s the club NO ONE wants to be a member of, of that I can guarantee…..it’s true, it’s a living nightmare that never goes away, like your heart has been ripped out 💔💔💔

This makes so mad about store owners in general. They leave one or two young people alone to lock up no security guards. I see this a lot in stores and, gas stations. And why close the store later then the other stores in the mall? But they don't care the owner's are safe at home and these poor young people have to be alone to lock up and be put in danger.

I agree. It seems so irresponsible to have young teenage girls work so late and have the responsibility of closing a store. I also worry about females working alone late at night at gas stations and convenience stores. Too many horror stories with that scenario. This is so sad. My heart goes out to the families.

When I was 16 I worked for Tim Hortons and my boss sent me to drop a deposit and I had no idea I was carrying 4000 in my bag and it was a dangerous city I had to walk to the bank they really don't care about the employees safety sometimes

I thought the same. Seems very irresponsible to leave teenagers to close the shop alone. There should have been an older, more experienced manager there who would have been better trained to deal with a robbery. But of course we can't know if that actually would have saved their lives or not.

I know from watching videos that address this that people are far less inclined to click on a recommended video that is 3 hours long. Imagine she posted her entire 7-part series on the Manson Family in one video. It's over 7 hours long. New subs won't care to commit to that. Edit: also, we'd likely wait weeks for content if she didn't post separately. Most other creators (that aren't TC creators) post only once or twice weekly with their 12 min videos.

I had a job at an ice cream shop in high school and i got my best friend a job there too. We had the BEST time and had so much fun. It was super scary closing at 10pm but we had a security guard to escort us to the dumpsters and to our cars. This case is just senseless and so so sad.

In the early, early 90's as college freshmen a friend got me a job at the Friendly's in the mall where she worked. The manager, Scott, was in his 30's at the time with young children...but he ALWAYS stayed with 'the girls' through closing and saw us into our cars.

These kind of cases really scare me, because I realize this easily could have been me. I used to work at an Icecream parlour and often opened by myself and closed with one other girl. We closed late as well, at 11. Taking out the trash scared me so bad. It was dark and the dumpster wasn't lit.

I love to see the comment section not going after the security guard, every time I have heard this case everyone goes after him and it’s so sad. People have been so rude to him and saying thing like “he should have been the one to die”. I worked at a mom and pop pizza shop in a rural area when I was 16. Most of us were young girls who worked there. But the owners ALWAYS had at least 1 young man there with us. And thankfully the few instances we had with suspicious or aggresive people that would come in, they handled it for us. And the boy that was working would always walk us to our cars at night. These poor girls 🥺

I worked at a gas station at night, for a short period of time. We were girls only. The owner didn't care at all. Luckily, we had nice costumers who usually ended up hanging out with us at closing time, making sure we were safe. I can't imagine being alone, or just with another girl around. watching this series again because my parents mentioned this case today in passing. My parents moved here to Austin after college together in early 1990 (this happened in ‘91, I was born in ‘93). Northcross Mall is where I learned to ice skate as a kid in the mid to late 90s, and i continued going to skate with friends there for a long time. Austin is a big city now, but it still feels safe here. People are kind, there’s always good local food and live music to enjoy. Things like these girls’ murders, and the Austin package bomber a couple years ago, rock every Austinite’s world quite a bit. I’m sending love to the parents/families of these young ladies, because I know how rough it must’ve been for them. I’m going to call local news stations this week to implore they do a story reminding Austin about the girls and the case.

Thank you for covering this story with such detail and sensitivity Stephanie. Jennifer and Sarah were my second cousins. Their father is my father's cousin. I never got to know the girls, but did get to meet Jennifer and hold baby Sarah when I was about 6 or 7 at a family reunion. I have only vague memories of it. I was 19 when they were killed and I remember how it devastated the family. It's still so hard to believe. I didn't get to attend their funeral, but my father and Nana did and I was told how awful it was for everyone there. They were great girls. I wish we had lived closer to each other so I could have gotten to know them better. Every time I see someone covering this story, I watch to make sure it's been handled with dignity and sensitivity and without sensationalism. Thank you for doing that.

Julie, yassss. I was surprised that didn't come up. In my 20s I was in Chicago in the 90s but we knew of the Austin vibe and I lived in the same kind of neighborhood. Stephanie was right on that even if you weren't a musician "you'd know 2 or 3." Except it's also more like -- and if you know 2 or 3 musicians, you'll soon know 4 or 10. 😂 Ah, the 1990s. I hope others will add some personal 90s history, here. It really was a great time. Out of all of the cases you've covered, this one probably upsets me the most. The way you described the girls and their lives filled me with such a sense of dread, knowing what a horrible end they'd meet. I didn't grow up in Austin, but the way that it was in the 90s sounds very similar to where I grew up near Plano Texas, and I can vividly imagine myself or my friends in their places. I mostly listen to your videos while I'm working so I don't see the background much, but it doesn't bother me regardless. I watch you for you, not your background lol

Please visit!) People who are from Austin can no longer afford the taxes on their family homes. When we finally had to sell, they immediately tore it down & built a literal mansion. Both of my parents were from Austin and in their teens-early 20s in the 1990s. My mom worked at the Northcross Mall. I remember her taking me there in the 2000s and the escalators literally blowing my mind. Both of my parents went to Lanier high school. She told me so much about this case growing up but hearing all these names just really brought me back. She was also a freshman in 1991 and my father was a senior. I completely agree with you, in all of the shows I had seen on this case growing up I never felt I really got to know these girls. I really appreciate you covering this case.

I have heard of this case before though I don't remember much about it. However after Stephanie's detailing of who these girls were, after the telling of their character, their family life, etc. I will never forget these girls again. I can tell you from experience, I went to an agricultural school in the Northeast, I was in FFA. It tells me a lot about their character. Being in FFA is like being in a mix of all classes into one. Math, science, history, even gym because of the physical fitness you have to be in order to work with sometimes large and strong animals. Its not an easy class at all. It's definitely not 'petting animals and playing with baby animals all the time', its waking up an hour before other kids have to so you can go muck out manure and urine in animal stalls/pens and measure out feed for all the animals staying at the school so they'd be ready and calmer for classes that day, even if it's snowing/raining (or like me one day, even if you forget gloves D= ). It's being able to tell the difference of variegated crops, the differences in hybrid plants, and the history of irrigation. It's being able (mentally and physically) to handle talking about and doing some butchering of livestock for food after you've been caring and raising the animals everyday for a year. It's having to understand the finances of running an agricultural business, and then being able to go over to one of your classmates grand parents farm just because they need the assistance. It's a lot, A LOT of work and it isn't for everyone. These girls were amazing kids, who back then I was just a little younger than them at the time but I was just like them. They were set up to become heroes and pillars in their community. They would have no doubt done amazing things in their lifetimes. I cant help but feel deep sorrow even having never met them, and knowing that it wasn't just the families that were robbed, but the entire community. I love all your cases Stephanie but this one, I cant help but feel close to. I sincerely hope they solve this case someday, I can't wrap my head around why it's gone unsolved this long, but I am willing to bet with your part 2 episode, I will find out why. =(
