Dude I found her by stumbling across Ptolemaea. And that song literally changed the definition of what music could be for me. The flies buzzing referencing Beelzebub and how the insect sounds are the beat and play right into the sounds of the instruments. How the notes in the music itself are atonal which is the type of music used in horror movies (specifically demon possession movies). And that's not even going into the lyrics and the meaning and symbolism and references in them! That song blew my mind. I wish she would do more atonal and sirenesque songs like that! I want more that integrate sounds of nature into the music itself

I feel like “sun bleached flies” was a perfect way to describe the people she loves that are still stuck in the cult of religion. It makes you feel sad after hearing her follow up with “waiting for the day they’d escape” kind of like how a fly gets stuck in window desperately trying to escape and how she mentions “dancing with the windows open” makes me feel as though she’s trying open the window to save others from corruptness. The lyricism and storytelling is absolutely amazing. Definitely one of my all time favorite songs.

"The cult of religion". It brings me sorrow to see people see religions as prisons rather than sources of insight and wisdom. The interpretations are up to people, as are the practices, and many a time they (some religions more than others) practice in a way that causes harm. However, others make acts of greatness, give love, and breathe life to others because of their beliefs. Surely you can't believe religion as a whole is a cult, right?
@jrm4625
@jrm4625 Жыл бұрын
@@rynun7620 Christianity and every branch of it is a cult as a whole. There is millions upon millions of documented evidence to prove this throughout history as well. The entire religion was purposely created to gain control, power and money over the majority of the population considering brainwashing people is proven to be one of the greatest weapons in human history. Individually, people practice however they want to practice and if you practice any religion without weaponizing it or harming others with it then you are the 1% of the entire Christian religion.
@rynun7620
@rynun7620 Жыл бұрын
@@jrm4625 that's...an interesting take. I get the bad rep of Christianity and the cult-like aspects in a majority of denominations, but I'm talking about the concept of religion in general. You called it a cult. Clearly you despise the abrahamic religions (as does pretty much every fan of Ethel Cain)...but what about Hinduism? What about the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama or the belief of the Tao and Shinto? Are those religions all cults to you too?
@jrm4625
@jrm4625 Жыл бұрын
@@rynun7620 you must be new to Hayden’s music and you must be new to the concept/story of Ethel Cain as a character. In this conceptual album Ethel is escaping from the Christian religion (the baptist church). This is the only religion I am referring to considering it is the only religion that is relevant to Ethel.

it was such a privilege seeing her in a fairly small venue in amsterdam. I totally cried during sun bleached flies. my favorite line on the album is "I always knew that in the end no one was coming to save me". Discovered her in may 2022 and then 6 months later went to her show in Berlin and honestly it was one of the best nights of my life. The way she performs and has so much stage presence while being calm and static and just kind of like a painting if that makes sense. Her music is mostly down tempo and something you'd listen on your own so its hard to expect people to dance to it and go crazy live but she pulled it off in a way where it almost felt like a church service with her being the preacher and audience her choir. Also have to flex the fact I been at the front row and had few cute interactions with her during few songs and even gave her a polaroid picture i took of her during thoroughfare :,))) In conclusion she is here to stay and she really ascended the mothers chart so easily

What a beautifully made homage to one of my favorite artists right now.... I could say SO much about her. But here's one small thing..... Ethel/Hayden made me fall in love with SUMMER. I used to HATE the summer. I've always been an autumn/winter introvert. The approach of summer would make me feel anxious. Hot humid sweaty dusty....too raw. But....Ethel's music _and_ interviews and livestreams etc have 100% changed my mind. It's literally recontextualized an entire SEASON in my mind....which is kinda crazy tbh. But I'm genuinely grateful to her for that. I can't wait for the summer of 2023 now.... =) btw....that's SO cool that she's touring with Caroline Polachak....another iconic human being. In Ethel's KEXP interview she mentioned how she adores these larger than life, yet oddball, women in music who create....worlds. Caroline is one of those people. As is her own idol...Florence Welch. I would add to that list...Aurora. My own creative muse and the closest thing to a real life Bodhisattva I've ever come across.

I hope your video introduces her to more people because she seems super talented. A House in Nebraska sounds like a haunting worship song sung in an empty building, and I like that sound.However, I don't know if it's because I know the story about the song or bc it's so haunting on it's own, but I can't. Great video!! I started listening to her just a couple weeks ago after seeing her pop up in memes/discussions online and of course after Obama's year-end playlist.
