I’ve always loved “Welcome to New York” not because of its lyrics but because of what it means. The songwriting is nothing special so far as Taylor’s songs go but I think of “New York” as a metaphor for the pop genre. The bombastic synths essentially welcome the listener to pop Taylor. Thus making it the perfect album opener.

This album quite literally taught me to speak English. I was a 15 year old French girl, I had bought an album with my own money for the first time ever and I was so obsessed with it that I put my mind to understanding every lyric, every metaphor, every play on words by studying the lyric booklet for hours on end. 9 years later I'm about to graduate from a master's degree in English literature. 1989 TV feels like such a full circle moment for me. :')

I had my eye on Taylor since 2006, I knew in my gut even as a teenager that she was going to be huge. She was already a superstar, but 1989 to me was her breakthrough where she went from being a well loved country artist/songwriter to a generation defining living legend. Every other win for her since 1989 has been just bonuses. If that had been her career peak, she still would have walked away a legend. I thought that maybe it was her career peak…I could not have predicted Folklore, Evermore, Midnights debuting with over a million, and on top of all that, the rerecordgins all hitting #1 and having hit singles of their own. Just incredible.
@EljohnMacaranas
@EljohnMacaranas Жыл бұрын
To me, the rerecordings, in whole, have been her career peak (so far). I can't name another artist whose managed to really capitalize and turn around a devastating personal and creative loss (the OG masters) into an opportunity for fans to show their support and recapture old memories. The Eras Tour itself is an embodiment for her victory in reclaiming her words, voice, and image over the years. Scooter buying the masters may have accidentally set her up for her finest moments so far. 🩵

It’s absolutely gross to think execs (particularly men) can own this woman’s words and image… as if it’s something they can throw money at and keep… like if someone as big as Taylor can be bullied by these execs, my heart goes out all our other faves and newer artists. They need to stand together and reclaim their rights to ownership and art. We’re seeing it with actors and writers striking over being underpaid.

@@suspiciousstar7547 Teenage Dream’s pretty close but there’s a lack of personal attachment to it. Perry’s key error during the TD and Prism eras was not building the level of rapport Swift has had with fans. Swift’s survival has always been predicated on having a truly engaged and loyal core base of support (which has grown to even wilder levels) that kept her afloat through tough times. That’s why she’s never had a true flop era, even a commercially “disappointing” era like Lover sees her with number 2 hits and the some of the best sales of that year. That’s not to say there’s no downside to that as the Jack Margaret wedding frenzy proves but Perry simple didn’t play the game to win forever. Thing to be noted is despite the pop genre it doesnt really is filled with generic subjects that pop music usually revolves around.. Sure she wanted to go beyond her comfort zone,re invent herself and take risks.. But i also see this as her new way of dealing with same issues of heartbreak,criticism & trauma Prior to it..She has saddest record ie "Red" under her belt...and her way to dealing with scrutiny & critucism is her feeling victimised With 1989 she uses poptism and with light hearted music she copes up with it Like All u had to do was stay,Wonderland,I wish you would are sad but you wont notice til u go thru lyrics She's conveying emotional complexeties thru the pop sounding Style,out of the woods ,i know places,this love,wildest dreams for examples.. I think the instrumentals do so much of the work on top of her lyrics. I have to agree the switch to a more light palette even with heavy topics (Clean is just as intense as any Red deep cut) made sense especially dealing the growing pains and how harsh Red had been as an era. I didn’t say it in my video but the color shift from burning red to pastel whites and blues really hammers in how big of a leap this all was. Truly a modern classic masterpiece. 🩵

‘1989’ will always have a special place in my heart. As the era that got me to become a full Swiftie, I wasn’t necessarily involved in the era since I was pretty small at the time it was around. However, I still have great personal memories of ‘1989’, as the album and its singles reigned my early childhood. Looking through retrospect, it will always be my favorite pop album along with ‘The Truth About Love’, ‘Teenage Dream’, and ‘Future Nostalgia’ as well as one of my favorite Taylor albums overall. You were also right about it being timeless as the tracks could have been hits in 80s, 90s, and even today. All in all, I can’t wait until ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version) comes out :D! Those are some of the best records of the 2010’s, I think FN despite not being as big as 1989 was a moment in itself for traditional pop. Good music somehow evokes its time but also transcends it! This TV is going to be amazing, I imagine there was so much care put into it because of how important it is and the need for it to top the originals (a hard order) but I do think after a mostly spotless Speak Now TV, it can be done. Yes!! I loved this! This is the first album I listened to all the way through of hers, and it's what made me a fan. The writing alone was enough to captivate me but honestly there was so much intrigue around her at the time too, keeping uo with the news on her was like getting "authors notes" to your favorite book. That era was bursting with color, excitement, youthfulness and it was my "coming of age" college album too. I was navigating a tumultuous, exciting and new relationship that was full of longing, uncertainty and wonder for the first time when that album came out, and the songs in 1989 sounded EXACTLY what those days felt like to me. She captured my early 20s in song.
@EljohnMacaranas

Loved this comment because yes! This was such a coming of age album, what most authors call New Adult, past the YA and more into the stage of becoming. The news about her everyday had been fun, agreed it did feel like author’s notes a little snippets. I felt like even though she had been a star before, there was a naïveté to it all. A genuine learning of how to navigate being someone as popular as the president (I truly believe if she were to run she would win nowadays.) While we all can’t truly relate the general idea of being somewhere new and not knowing who to be or who to trust just feels so rite of passage-y. It truly was a marvelous time! Swift’s 1989 persona and story really felt so universal. A good friend of mine said she’d been like Hello Kitty-level popular and I always felt that comparison was apt.

Excellent video! You really distilled the sense of how grand and wide sweeping this imperial era was. I didn't have access to the internet at the time but even then I had heard of 1989 through radio alone, in a country on the opposite side of the planet from where she was living at the time. That's how big it was. So I'm incredibly excited to relive this era in its entirety one last time! Also that Big Sur mention caught me off guard and got a surprised chuckle out of me. I disagree that 1989 is impersonal just because it has simpler lyrics. There’s an energy to it that’s so raw and frantic that you really feel like you’re listening to Taylor’s innermost thoughts at the time. Plus, the deep cuts still have very specific lyrics.

We also have to mention this album came out when a lot of major pop stars weren’t putting out anything. Big names like Bruno Mars & Rihanna didn’t release albums in a while. Katy Perry just wrapped up the prism era, Miley wrapped up bangerz, Beyoncé was wrapping up the self titled era & Lady Gaga was non existent in 2014. Nicki, Ariana, Ed Sheeran & Sam smith had big albums that year but not much competition with smaller artist like Meghan trainor, Iggy & Nico and Vinz leaving a window for Taylor to have a massive moment in the spotlight. By the end of 2015 Adele, Justin Bieber and the weekend released big projects a whole year or so later after 1989. Long story short there wasn’t that much competition when this album was out
@EljohnMacaranas

The spillover of it lasting well into 2015 and still putting a decent fight up until 25 is still impressive. I imagine Taylor and Adele are two of the few artists ppl will push forward or back albums to avoid directly competition.

I loved how theatrical the whole album was. I also remember feeling this album in the context of 2012 Electra Heart, 2012 Teenage Dream, and 2012 Born To Die being recent releases which were all chefs kiss filled with masterpiece songs. I felt like Taylor’s Blank Space was similar to Marina’s How to be a Heartbreaker. Shake it Off was as silly as Bubblegum Bitch. I know they’re not the same of course but they were all very visually strong via lyrics or the eras themselves.

I wasn't a fan of her , even when 1989 came out . I remember when she would be EVERYWHERE during that year. I was so tired of hearing blank space and shake it off everywhere I went, and I didn't even like them. Even my sister would listen to it and she still is not into her music . It wasn't until 2015-2016 when I decided I would listen to the album, after watching a few vocally impressive clips of her 1989 tour. Listening to the album, hit after hit, pop perfection, was an experience. It really changed me , I couldn't stop listening to it for months, even years. The pop beat along with the deep sad lyrics felt so fascinating. It felt like she would perfectly describe certain feelings I'd have in my life with songs like wildest dreams, out of the woods and all you had to do was stay. Style never leaves my playlist to this day. 😅 Such a monumental pop album.

Those tracks definitely add value to the overall record in a way other deluxe tracks at the time didn’t. Usually deluxe tracks in the 2000s era were B-sides or demos that were scrapped or repurposed into other songs. What a great album this was!

The work you put into this video is stunning. You captured the deep dives and visuals spectacularly and is iconic. 👏👏👏 New Romantics is my favorite track, and I’m certain she researched the movement popularized by Spandau Ballet, and the Human League’s song Betrayed.

Thank you so much. I really felt like I had no excuse to not deliver visually, there was SO much to draw from that I had to narrow my choices around the music videos, tour footage and my two favorite live TV performances (AMAs Blank Space and that iconic Victoria's Secret Style performance)

It was a crazy era like there was too much happening all at once and because social media wasn’t really as developed: like each little thing felt so huge! Nowadays we’re so stretched out, we don’t get to let a moment last. Thank you so much for watching 🩵

Before I even watch any of the video, the answer is: Style. Style made 1989 timeless. That song will never go out of style.

YES! Style itself deserved so much better! There’s a reason it’s made 3 consecutive setlists!
