Even in the Chicago suburbs, I was taught abstinence only, complete with false information and made up horror stories, until the age of fifteen. Yay I'm the #1000th view, probably. There's this hypothesis around the skeptic community about why the Christian fundamentalists do this: lt's not really about kids keeping 'pure' before marriage - It's about them making all sex after marriage is fundamentally safe, therefore making them eschew contraception, have lots of kids and increasing exponentially the numbers of future parishioners.
@talynhastime93434 жыл бұрын
Since I find the seven deadly sins an interesting motif, I read up a bit about it as a non-Catholic and of course stumbled across what the church fathers of yore thought about "lust" and their spiritual reasons for "no sex before marriage". Essentially, the idea was that if you're focused only on pleasures of the body, you're not connecting lovingly with that person. Since marriage is supposed to be like God's relationship with the church, a holy and unconditionally loving union, just focusing on sex will make that connection hollow because someone's attractiveness is temporary but the emotional bond you have with someone is forever. Sex is good and fine, it's a gift from God, but earthly pleasures shouldn't be the only thing you focus on, you should still be building spiritual and emotional connections with people (whatever you define as "spiritual"). There's also the problem of thinking purely with your hormones and urges and nothing else... To be honest, that's kind of wise when you think about it, and it's something that non-religious people have realized for themselves. When someone argues for no sex before marriage on *those* grounds, I at least understand where they're coming from even if I don't agree with it. But shit like this is just predicated on "Because STDs. Because pregnancy. Because hysterectomies, mmmkay." This could just be because there's a cultural difference between Protestant and Catholic, but oh well.

@@talynhastime9343 Here is the issue I've always had with people like Dobson: What do they think about people where love and sexual desire are intertwined, that is, you love someone so you want them to have sex with you, or you have sex and then develop solid affection for the person? Both happen fairly often.
