Learning about plecos within the aquarium is tricky but when there are so many myth about the group it makes it even more difficult. When there are over 1000 species from carnivores to algae specialists, all inhabiting very different habitats. KZbin, social media and websites have spread misinformation about the group.
Loricariidae are frequently seen as the ideal tankmate for many fishes although they are very complex and unusual aquarium fishes. With a diversity of sizes from large to small they can fit in a wide diversity of different sized aquariums. While many are specialist algae eaters they will not clean an aquarium or fish tank and this can lead to a rather difficult to keep an expensive fish. Regardless of their specialist diets it can make them very interesting to feed and keep.
While they are limiting in terms of tankmates with such long lifespans they can become brilliant pet fish. Many fishes can still be kept with them from loaches to cichlids, discus and tetra, maybe just requiring that little more research.

You know your stuff, I think if you could add pictures to your videos it would help people like me how are visual learners. Very Interesting!

Thank you! I do need to in future, my website generally has more images as it's easier to provide images there. I haven't got an exact article companion for this video yet but I might make one of the next few days. thescientificfishkeeper.co.uk/category/loricariidae-plecos/

I love your content! I think it would be awesome to see a series on plecos that you would recomend based up on tank size and your knowledge.

Thank you! i might do, I might stick to hardy species as well as quite a lot of plecos can be a bit more tricky to keep or take more time.

Wait, they do not need wood to eat or digest?? The spawns Ive had on hypancistrus variations have all gone to "eat" on the wood days and days before they even start to accept any other food. Even had spawns that still have their "yellow" sack and go for the wood... Well, okey they maybe do not eat the wood, but the slimecoat on the wood, the cellulosa breaking down..

No they don’t need wood or use it for digestion. There is also evidence that the cellulose in wood based foods can lead to liver disease in fishes. Wood isn’t actually found in a lot of Hypancistrus environments. Most don’t have the jaws for breaking into wood and it’s not found in their gut in the wild. Wood like any surface can grow bacteria but whether they will eat that bacteria or not is another thing.

@@FreshwaterIchthyologyvery interesting. I personally have had very little success raising spawns without the element of wood. As it feels like their first poop are brown. As with frytanks without wood its more transparent. Very very interesting, it breaks all my knowledge base and how Ive been doing it. Does this apply to regular Ancistrus sp. Too? The brown, red, yellow, white and so on..?

@@williamjansson It is unlikely to be the wood itself, some woods do seem to break down in the water rapidly though so if the fish is grazing looking for food I can imagine some might enter the directive tract. Yeah Ancistrus similarly but also their teeth are much finer and jaws generally less robust then Hypancistrus let alone those who do break into wood. I don't think wood is bad to have it's just not anything to do with their diet. I do think that the wood based diets are probably best avoided as so far in a few minutes of reading I've found two studies confirming cellulose causes fatty liver disease and damage in many different fishes. From memory bulk wood itself doesn't when compared but none of the brands use that.

Thanks Rebecca! What would you say are some good sources for researching care for a specific species?

Hi, I do have quite a bit on my website, thescientificfishkeeper.co.uk/ But I do really recommend starting out on websites like Planet Catfish, Scot Cat (the lengths of the fishes they use are standard length but they don't state it), there are a lot of good websites from Mainland Europe, L Welse is great for species that aren't commonly spawned. Loricariidae.info is great as well.

Not really, what else is in the tank? There are species who eat algae but not clean the glass.
