I once read, in I believe in a Fortean Times article, that there was evidence on his death certificate that Thomas Myers suffered from Parkinson's Disease. Even today a lot of people don't understand the symptoms that Parkinson's sufferers show, back then it could easily have been put down to something sinister, even demonic possession, which would explain both his reclusiveness and peoples suspicions about him. I'm not saying the rest didn't happen and it is a good story, but it does show how a simple illness could have been the start of many of the rumours about the property. Having had a Father who suffered from Parkinson's I've seen how much it can effect someone and people's reaction to it even today.

@@BedtimeStoriesChannel Thank goodness for Google, I've found the article online. It was from Fortean Times Christmas 2015 edition, and according to the article his death certificate stated '30th November 1874, Thomas Myers, Mate, 71 Years, Gentleman, Paralysis agitans, Diseased Heart Certified, Jane Long Present at Death'. Paralysis agitans is an archaic term for Parkinson's. I hate to mention anything without being able to give a source.

that was victorian age, the green pigment was indeed arsenic and there was so much of it that in one occasion, a child who had been shewing on a piece of it died within hours. the damp conditions indoors also created mold and that ate the arsenic and so it created extremely toxic spores. arsenic poisoning is painful and causes both excessive diarrhea and vomiting before death among other painful symptoms like convulsions and confusion.

@Super Otter Idk why you would be sad but you should feel a bit guilty when the USA played a role in ending the British Colonial Empire by seizing its role as the foremost Superpower after WW2 and as the world's largest currency reserve with the dollar replacing the sterling because of how much the UK was indebted to the USA after WWI and WWII. In the Middle East USA did not side with the Brits and France during the Suez Crisis and the USA took upon itself to ally with Saudi for its Oil Reserves after British prestige was shattered after the Suez Crisis for example. The UK has so much to be blame on itself by continuing to relying on an outdated economy model with its colonies even after the age of colonialism wasn't lucrative anymore and it felt that huge blow when colony after colony and its dominions declared independence. USA took upon itself to partner with many of the UK's former holdings. Well off UK citizens and ordinary folk alike migrate to better life elsewhere in the USA, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, China and former colonies. No surprise that many of its immigrants are from former colonial holdings for cheap labor.

It didn't describe a cephalopod, but the sound of a very heavy bipedal creature climbing the stairs to the second floor. I remember it said the sound was as if its feet had been cut off and was climbing on bloody stumps. I don't remember what happened when it reached the landing. But it was said one sailor was thrown through the window (or jumped) to land on the spiked fence. The other went mad. It was the scariest story I had ever read. I went back for the book several times but never saw it again.

Sometimes the "straightforward" is the "outlandish". Sometimes to tell the accurate truth without any exaggeration is uncomfortable for people to believe. Yet it is what it is. I'm not speaking of the above account necessarily. All I'm saying is I know it takes alot of courage to speak to others about what many would rather not believe because it threatens their mental comfort zones. All I can say with absolute certainty is this. Spirits absolutely and certainly exist. Take everything with a grain of salt by all means I do as well. But I also know what has happened in my life. And I would rather accept an uncomfortable truth than concoct a comfortable foolish and ignorant lie.

Interesting, especially all pro and con evaluations towards the end. Perhaps coincidence, but on Google streetview the sign by police is still visible on #50, but when zooming in it is obscured by a household moving van, parked at #50. Another owner abandoning the place? The cephalopod in the sewer theory is tempting, but I would expect other and nearby houses to show the same phenominon, except ... when one of the former owners would have flushed some of those creatures and the sewers were per house separated by a grid.

Nice one guys, I remember reading about this in a book of ghost stories when I was a kid. Forgotten most of them now, but this one stood out. Mainly because it terrified me. I also remember seeing the property featured on a paranormal show around 25 years ago. The owner at that time let the crew in, but told them he'd sealed up "the room". When asked if he'd seen anything he said no, but there were noises from time to time. The main differences in the other accounts of this story that I've encountered were that the mad brother was locked in the bedroom, not the cellar. I guess that could have been an embellishment to try to tie everything together around that room, but who knows? Then in the version that I read the sailor was running back to the house with the policeman, they heard a hideous scream from inside & ran in to find the other chap laying at the foot of the stairs, twisted up & with a look of pure horror on his face. There will always be discrepancies with every retelling tho. Top work as always.

@Monica Rivera Hold on; you do understand how storytelling works, right? It's the same way we understand what a character who is completely alone gets up to in a film. How can we know what they are up to if no one else is present? Because the camera is telling the story, just as the narrator is telling the story here. It's not difficult to take an educated guess at what Blunden's actions were before Martin woke up. Fuck, stop taking everything so seriously. It's just entertainment. Also; @At Talking About Games Stop trying to pull on KZbin you desperate fool.
@TalkingAboutGames
@TalkingAboutGames 5 жыл бұрын
@Bedtime Stories I didn't accuse you of embelishing the story, I meant that when the story was originally passed on they could have added that "embelishment". I'm guessing people have accused you of that? I didn't. @Dominic Pull on KZbin? What does that mean? Also, don't call me a fool, you desperate idiot. Monica brings out a valid point, she is saying that if the story were to be true, the sailor would wake up to a scene where he is seeing his companion attacked by an octopus thing, he would have no idea that the creature was slowly creeping towards him, and that his mate tried to save him using a poker or whatever. It's slightly similar to those supposedly real ghost stories when a man, all alone, gets killed by this or that ghost, and no one else but him witnessed the event, and it's impossible to know what actually happened because he died. Who could know what actually happened? What is this, the children's comment section? Just because you are not smart enough to analyze things, doesn't mean you have to get your panties in a bunch.
@DontPetMooses

Well, my intention was never to start an argument. I was simply looking for an answer to a question. It was just an observation. @Dominic Chessington, I do understand that this video/channel is for entertainment. Although, my understanding is that it's not only entertainment but actual accounts and fact on the event. A movie, as you are referring to, is different than real life events where there were no cameras to record it. We are solely going off the description of Martin. How would Martin know what his friend had seen if Martin was sleeping? And for them to see the exact same thing without regarding one another. I'm sure that when the creature was sucking Blunden's neck, he didn't stop to think about talking to Martin about what he had seen while Martin was sleeping. @Talking About Games, I appreciate your defense for me. I wouldn't worry too much about Dominic's comment. We can't expect everyone to understand different ways of thinking. If he continues to berate, you can simply ignore him. @Bedtime Stories, I truly do enjoy your channel and the detail and thoroughness of your videos. I hope my question/comment didn't insult in any way.

Great video. This reminds me of a Halloween documentary on the paranormal I saw many years ago, where one of the items in the programme involved interviewing people who work for the antique book seller mentioned in the video - the company is called Maggs Brothers. They moved out of the house in 2015. There were two stories. The first was an account of someone who was working late on the second floor, and at around midnight he heard a thud on the landing outside the room he was in - followed by what he described as: "something large and wet being dragged across the floor". The sound seemed to be getting closer to the door of his office (which was the only way in or out) , and the bloke is by now crapping himself wondering what to do. He somehow got up the nerve to get up from his desk and walk towards the door - at which point the noise abruptly stopped. He looked out on to the landing, only to find nothing out of the ordinary. The interviewer then asked him if he had checked the rest of the house over - and he replied that the next thing he did was to grab his coat and wallet and go home! He also said that he told his manager what had happened the next day - expecting his manager to laugh at him; but he instead became very serious and quiet, and advised him to only work late on his own during the summer months - and to make sure he had gone home before sunset during the autumn and winter. The second story was from a secretary who was looking for some paperwork in a room that was being used for storage. She had left the door half open behind her, and as she was sat at a desk facing the door; she saw: "a black mass - about the size of a few footballs. It was floating about a meter off the ground, and it came in to the room from the landing; and when it came in it knocked the door open all the way. It moved in a straight line from the door to the opposite wall, and then went back out the door again". Apparently she sat there in stunned silence for so long her manager came looking for her. I don't remember the name of the programme or the channel it was shown on. This would have been a late night satellite channel I was watching back in the 90's. The two stories have always stuck with me. No idea if they are true or not, and the programme was shown at Halloween time; so things should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, I think they are two great stories about the house - so I thought I would post them.

Having heard & read this story many times over my 40+ years on this Earth, this version of the Warboys encounter in different than all the others I've read. In the other versions of this story, there is a dinner party taking place at #50, at which the topic of the place being haunted is brought up. Warboys declares he is not afraid to sleep in the "haunted room" and after much convincing is allowed to stay in the room, with the instructions that if anything odd happens he is to pull the servant bells immediately. The rest of the party remains downstairs, anxiously passing the time. Suddenly there is ONE very sharp ring of the servant's bells. Everyone rushes upstairs to find Warboys in the condition mentioned in this version, and he dies later before being able to describe what he saw. In some versions he has a pistol with him, in other versions he's unarmed.

The story with the two sailors doesn’t make sense. It seems too dramatized as the story switches perspectives despite one sailor dying. How did Martin know what Blunden saw and how he reacted.
