***** I actually think he would've done better if he used Smolensk and the subsequent retreat of the Russian army as an opportunity to drive into more valuable areas than the one in between Smolensk and Moscow, such as Ukraine, and be able to fight Russia's army in warmer conditions, as well as seizing the breadbasket along with Russia's access to the Black Sea. Or Napoleon could have just obliterated the Russian army by preventing their initial retreat in the first place.

''Relations with Spain quickly deteriorate during the operation, eventually leading to Spain switching sides, and ultimately the Peninsular War'' Hold on, are you suggesting that Spain switched side for no reason at all? Since the 16th century? Spain started to decline in the 18th century, not the 16th. In the 16th adn 17th century Spain was the major power in Europe and the world. Also, about Wellington army. That was not the only army, as said before, there were isolated armies in Spain that should not be belittle, since they won most of the first battle against France. Actually, they won the very FIRST battle against the Napoleonic Empire, led by a Spanish general. And also, the first years the English and Portuguese didn't helped the Spanish at all, quite the opposite, they would do anything possible to ignore Spain's ask for help, or actually say they would help and in the last moment back up on their word, apart from the raping, sacking and burning of Spanish cities after "liberating" them from the French invaders. More than helpful, they were a burden, to put it midly, but they were really just another invading and destructive force (and it is well known that their intention was to actually invade Spain after expelling the French, they just concluded that it wouldn't be that easy and let it be). It is indeed when Wellington was finally in charge that things changed for the better, but he was not in charge from the very beginning.

The Mongols conquered them The Germans knocked them out of World War One The trick to beating the Russians is 1. don't attack them when they are unified and 2. Equip your goddamn troops for winter. It'll be there. The Finns handed the Russians their ass but eventually had to quit due to sheer numbers but ended up more or less favourably. The Russians did not have their hearts in it (it was not a defensive war) and the Finns were even better prepared for winter. The Poles sent them packing in the 1920s. The Poles battered the Red Army and rope-a-doped for a bit. The Russians were decisively defeated by the Japanese in 1904-05 in Port Arthur and the Far East.

john hannibal None of those were a decisive loss for the Russians. Poland and Finland was just a hiccup in their conquest of reclaiming lost land. The Germans didn’t knock them out of the war either, revolution was inevitable. Even if Lenin wasn’t there, Trotsky could have probably done it himself or Lenin could have left Switzerland himself. Russia didn’t exist when the mongols invaded

I have to say that France was the one who declared war to Spain. The French armies were suppossed to march to Portugal via the Burgos route, but they began marching into towns as far as Zaragoza. Later in 1808, Ferdinand, the son of Charles III of Spain made a coup (Aranjuez Mutiny). Seeing that there was no resolution on that, Napoleon convocated both of them at Bayonne, where Ferdinand abdicated in Charles, and Charles abdicated in Joseph, Napoleon's brother. However, there were members of the royal family in Madrid, and when the French forces entered Madrid and kidnapped the young prince, the Spaniards attacked the French (2 of May uprising).

In 1808, the son of the king of Spain, Ferdinand VII, was making a coup d'état at Aranjuez. Ferdinand was anti-french, and he could easiky enter in war against France with thr support of Portuguese and British troops. The invasion was a sort of preventive attack. Yep, had Portugal accepted Napoleon's ultimatum and cut all trade with England like every other European country had done, the British would have been starved to death before they could even fight Napoleon. Because Portugal didn't accept it, Napoleon invaded and the Royal Family fled to Brazil, while the army and people resorted to guerrilla warfare against the French. The British then arrived to Portugal and with the help of the Portuguese pushed Napoleon back into France. Once Napoleon was defeated, the Portuguese Empire was in shambles, since we had spent all our money in the war, and shortly thereafter Brasil fought and gained independence, and after that, to add insult to injury, Portugal entered into a civil war. Through all of that the British decided to help many of our enemies, buy our most profitable companies and destroy our textile industry, the backstabbing bastards.

Yes but if Napoleon had invaded Portugal as he wanted, a Bonaparte would become king of your kingdom (because the official king was in Brazil) and Portugal had a powerful fleet, a weapon between the hands of the French but the objective of the French invasion was to close the continental gate what Portugal was for the British. Yeah, that’s how they have brainwashed you to think thanks to the Spain’s Black Legend that mainly the Anglo Saxons spread (along with the French), through propaganda to destroyed a solid an rich Hispanoamerica (the term “Latinoamerica” was invented by a Frenchman named Michel Chevalier in the nineteen century and it’s nonsense), to turned into pieces, fight against each other and became poor, no by the Spanish like your school books make you believed. They lost territories to United States in the north and to Brazil in the south, and became basically a mess thanks to the British, mainly, which were behind all the independence scheme. It’s a shame that you portrayed Napoleon as a kind of hero instead of the bastard that he really was (not just regarding Spain, but other European fellows as well). By the way, later on in that same century France tried to conquered Mexico, so I wouldn’t be that blindly grateful to the French.

Short man? At that time, 5.2ft were not the same wether you counted them in UK or in France: in the former country, it meant 1.58m, while in the latter, it was circa 1.69m. Not impressive today, but, the average in France was about 5.45ft/ 1.66m... in 1900; Napoleonian wars took place on 1800-1815, so 100 years before he was just 2cm above average. On the other hand, his imperial guards were expected to have at least 6ft/1.83m of height, so it is quite easy to say he was short, and one should not forget Englishmen were always trying to belittle him (pun intended 🙃)

While other European monarchies bowed down to him, he had to pour countless men and resources at fighting the Habsburg realm, getting beat at Aspern and could've been defeated at Wagram even. France was near collapse before Bonaparte's Italian campaigns that ended the Revolutionary Wars. "Utterly smashed" lol. Do you study history, or are you a kid who just repeats what he sees in cringe internet memes?

It is to do with who has led them. If they would of had Generals with even half the assertiveness of Napoleon back in 1940 history would of been very different for Europe. Unfortunately they left it to extremely elderly senior officer's from the great war who were brought out of retirement and were way behind the times with modern blitzkrieg strategies of Germany.

Napoleon's biggest mistake was setting up the Continental System. Without it, there would have been no reason to invade Spain or Russia. All he had to do was keep beating the coalitions; and eventually, Britain would have sued for peace because they wouldn't have been able to afford funding endless coalitions.

1710-1711: As a part of the southern russian army was surrounded by ottomans, zar Peter the first asked for peace and payed 250.000 rub to the ottoman empire. Because of the turkish losses in afrika, they must accept the russian offer. It wasn't really a victory for the ottomans. Both sides were dependend on peace. 1853-1856: Russia wanted to conquer the collapsing ottoman empire because of their weakness. But as Great Britain, France and Sardinia helped the Ottomans, the Zar had no choice but peace. It can't be a victory for the ottomans, because they could'nt do something if Britain and France didnt helped. And not only the ottomans, but russia couldnt do something against this allied force. ;)))))

It is because russians and ottomans started fighting at trhe time when the ottoman empire had lost much of its power. And there are a lot of reasons why it had lost its power before that wars. One of them is that while russians monitored the improvements much earlier than the ottomans, the ottoman empire didnt bother to do such an act because at that time they thought they were still better than europeans. On the other hand, some good sultans understood they were totall wrong and eventually they started to send some people to see what was happening in europe. However, these attemtps couldnt succeed because of the varying reasons. And ottomans hadnt been able to succeed in improving their country so much until the tanzimat in 1856.

Glory to the old Spanish Empire and their Guerrilleros who never surrender against the dishonorable french empire. Once i heard a historian say that for the Napoleonic France, Spain was like the Vietnam for USA. They lost lot of resources and troops in keeping Spain under french control and then they began to lose in all their fronts. They deserved it, any honor in taking Spain with a betray. That's why some Spanish still hating France (Not seriously, but yeah lol) Old Spain is known by his high sense of honor, always showed in battles where they fought bravely even being less in numbers.

The successes were explained by the lack of means granted by Napoleon and the decentralization of the command of the various French armies in the peninsula, the main troops of Napoleon were in the east of Europe..for the anecdote, the Spanish Civil Code, promulgated in 1889 is inspired by the Napoleonic Code..not forget than your actual king Felipe is a direct descendant of the French Bourbon dynasty.

Cougnamama I dont forget about Borbons have French Origins, but i either forget that they fought against England and Portugal to keep spain as an independent state. Also you should know that Borbons are indeed the legitimate heirs of Spain because of marriage matters, any french put them here by force as you believe. Indeed, If it were not for the Bourbons, Spain would have ended up being a region of France. So you see... You have to thanks your "french dinasty" ;)

For those who believe that Russia won the winter Russia invaded over 600,000 soldiers. In the battle of Borodino had 135,000 soldiers. In Moscow included about 90 000 soldiers. When started cold, in the army of Napoleon was no more than 70,000 soldiers. The loss of France 550,000 soldiers. The Russian army was scattered across Russia. So the West had only 200,000 soldiers. Absolutely not, you make stupids conclusions with these numbers. During the expedition, the French army was fighting for its survival because of the extremely difficult conditions that the Russians imposed on it (the technique of the burned earth) and this also resulted in mass desertions. The most of the men who Napoleon lost took place during the retreat after reaching the burned city of Moscow. The strategy of the Russians has always been to avoid the fight.
